Max was too in his own head (contemplating his own unworthiness and embarrassment) to notice anything amiss with Dani. He was usually hyper-aware of his friend's moods and demeanor but unfortunately he was cringing too hard at his inability to be cool to observe the range of emotions she was experiencing and, even worse, to enjoy the lovely moment for what it was worth. He managed to accept her proffered phone without humiliating himself further. First, he would start with checking certain files in the phone to make sure there weren't already any nasty listening bugs, keystroke logging programs or audio recording elements running in the background. Second, he'd check the phone settings to make sure that, barring someone physically taking Dani's phone and altering it, no one could put those sort of programs into her device int he future. Last, he'd remove the outside housing and check the mobile's innards for any suspicious hardware before putting it back together, good as new.
Max was unnaturally quiet as he began to work. As much as he doubted anyone would want to listen in on Dani's phone, he'd rather be safe than sorry. As he went through his mental checklist, a niggling sense of worry began to unfurl within Max.
"You know, the most damning thing about you probably being in cahoots with me," Max said, biting his lip. He hated that it was true. If he was a better person, a stronger person, he'd leave Dani alone so she could be safe and content. But, as he's becoming increasingly aware of, he's a selfish and weak kind of person and so he continues on with her, even though it's not in her best interest to do so.
"I mean, no one knows where I live and who I associate with besides you and Pete," he continued. "But, I mean, it's not likely to remain a secret forever I guess so...there's that."
Satisfied that steps 1 and 2 of his mission were complete, Max reached into his pocket and took out a little packet of tiny tools. He pulled out a miniature Phillip's head screwdriver and used it to remove the outer casing of Dani's phone. He poked around and, finding everything to be as it should be, Max began to screw everything back together. As he did so, Max couldn't help but wonder what sort of information she had on there; who she talked to, what sort of texts she was exchanging, if she had any pictures on her phone. When he realized that by pondering those sort of thoughts he was no better than those Patriot-Act abusing turds at the Capitol, he handed the phone back into her awaiting hands.
"So, good news. No one has been poking their nose into your business," Max announced, his gaze moving from her phone to her face. "And now, no one ever can. Eff those nosy dudes right in the aye."
He offered her a small smile as a sort of apology for his earlier weirdness and then took out his own phone. It would be getting dark soon and Max didn't want Dani to be traveling at night.
