Who: Savannah & Teagan
Where: The LBJ, Savannah's office
When: 12/8, morning
What: An examination before the examination
It’s all been very hush hush - her getting here, her arrival, her introduction to Pete and then her journey to and into Savannah’s office. The door is shut and Teagan looks uncertain. She also looks entirely out of place in a place like this. Like a wild animal in a palace, Teagan is all torn up and rusty. Her hair is a wild crown of tangles and braids. Her clothes are utilitarian - mens. There’s nothing frilly about any of her.
She hadn’t realized how tattered she appeared until she was standing in a reproduction of the Oval office, next to the polished look of the woman that runs the LBJ. Teagan’s just realized that she still doesn’t care. That she can’t be bothered with looking good. She has so much more on her mind and clothes was never a satisfactory distraction for her.
“I didn’t betray them.” she says outright. She might as well. Teagan knows that’s the question on her mind.
All this time Savannah hasn't wanted to believe that Teagan would rat on her fellow Officers like that, but it is a relief to hear the words straight from her mouth. With how much kindness Teagan has showed Maizie, she didn't think the woman could have been linked to the Capitol plot that ended Gray’s life.
Giving a short and slow nod, Savannah says, “I know. None of this is right, them thinkin’ you would do that. I'm real sorry, honey.”
Gesturing over to the table and the seating cushions, she adds, “We can sit here. Do you want any water?”
“‘Kay…That’ll be nice.” She says in regards to the water but she’s uncertain about the rest. She wants to believe that someone out there can listen and believe her with no questions asked. Teagan is unsure that it’s true. There is some part of her that thinks this has to be some set-up. That in a minute, Rome and all her boys are gonna come through the door and take her to their idea of justice served.
When she sits she sits facing the door, going so far as to push the chair so that she’s facing whoever might burst through at any moment.
When no one does right away it does nothing to abate her shivers. “How’s Maizie doin?”
Savannah pours them both water and joins her at the table. The question about Maizie is a heavy one, considering everything they’ve gone through these past several months--Gray’s death, LBJ’s new feud with the Capitol, getting to know the Hellhounds, finding out that Maizie is dating her best friend Olivia. She’s still coming to terms with the last one, but still she smiles. “She’s good. Happier than I’ve seen her in months.”
Sipping her water, she sets the glass down and sighs before looking across the table to meet Teagan’s gaze. There’s no point in putting this off any longer. All the small talk in the world wouldn’t make their problems go away. “I know you can’t be the rat with how much you love Maizie. Her daddy died because the rat gave information to the Capitol and they took advantage of that opportunity. I don’t think you could’ve done that. But who is it then?”
“I suspect Sonny,” replies Teagan, sure that Savannah must have at least met him on some occasion. She has no reason to hide it anymore, no reason that she shouldn’t just let her suspicions float to the surface. She is ninety nine percent sure that he’s the one. She doesn’t have any solid proof but her gut instincts are usually right. “He’s in there with them and I’m out here. So….” she reaches for the water she was given and takes a tentative sip before gulping it. The thirst had come on so greedy and desperate that she couldn’t stop herself from guzzling it down.
Savannah frowns at Teagan’s words, because she has in fact met Sonny. He gave her his condolences. But if what Teagan is saying is true, Sonny is one of the men responsible for Gray’s death. Taking a deep breath and releasing it slowly, she finally says, “What kind of sick son of a bitch does somethin’ like that? How could he betray y’all? What do you think Olinger’s promised him?”
“Because he’s a fuck face…” Teagan answers, putting the empty glass down. “I have no idea what kind of promise he’d get. Why he’d fuck us.” She doesn’t know and her hands go to her stomach. A stomach that is bulging out by now. “But I will make him pay. Somehow, someway, I am going to make that son of a bitch pay.” She bites her lower lip. It’s insecurity. Some inkling of the fact that she might not get to.
Jo and her have been going through Virgil’s papers, trying to find some shred of evidence. So far they haven’t broken into the vein of knowing. It’s frustrating and scary.
Savannah’s eyes follow Teagan’s hands, to the swell of her stomach. She couldn’t even imagine dealing with such a betrayal, especially during such a trying time as pregnancy. It couldn’t be comfortable being pregnant without the comfort of your home.
“If he’s really the rat, then Gray is dead because of that bastard,” Savannah says quietly, her gaze still on Teagan’s stomach, unable to stop the thoughts of how any chance of having a family with Gray had been stolen by Sonny. And because of Sonny, Teagan is separated from the father of her child. What else could Sonny take from them before it was too much? “Once the officers are free, are you gonna be able to convince them about Sonny or are you gonna do somethin’ even without their approval?”
“Their approval?” Her laugh is hard and just as harsh. “Fuck their approval. They threw me out.” That’s the bitterness talking. Teagan can’t help but feel that some. When she closes her eyes she can see Bishop’s disappointment. He considered it, even if it was just for a moment, that she could have ever turned her back on them, gone for a better deal. She remembers Rodeo going for her, wanting to choke her or kill her...do something. All of them down the line look down at the ground, look away from her. They don’t even wait to hear her out. It’s taken only a second for them all to think that her loyalty was cheap….that anyone could buy it. The hurt of that is down deep and she isn’t sure she’ll ever recover. She’s sure it’s scarred. “I am my own fucking club now. The only approval I need is my own.”
Savannah can’t begin to comprehend what Teagan must be feeling after being kicked out of the Dog Park, their trust in her shaken as well as hers in them. It’s going to be difficult to come back from that kind of betrayal. Savannah only worries about rash decisions being made out of anger or hurt that make Teagan’s relationship with the rest of the club irreparable.
Rather than commenting on that, Savannah instead said, “What kind of proof do you have against Sonny?”
It’s a sound question and Teagan isn’t sure she should say shit but she laughs and goes on, let’s Savannah in on a little secret. “Thing is...It all burned up in my trailer.” It’s not the whole truth. She doesn’t want to let go of what she knows, how she’s found out more information, who she’s been staying with and helping her. “I have some more information. I have to piece it all together and then I’ll have all I need.”
Savannah purses her lips, devastated on Teagan’s behalf at just another example of the loss she’s faced. Are they ever going to stop losing? “Not sure I’d be any help to you but if you ever need another set of eyes to put all the pieces together, you’ll let me know?”
Truth is, Teagan wouldn’t involve Savannah even if she was some super sleuth. This is her problem and dragging in someone who has a kid seems wrong. She’ll stay her distance. She wants Maizie’s parent to keep herself alive. No telling what the Hellhounds would do if they found out she’d been helping their traitorous Treasurer.
“Thanks.” That’s how she needs to respond because anything else might be offensive. It isn’t that she doesn’t believe the little blond couldn’t help her. It’s just safer this way.
“So who’s Pete? You know him?” Might as well find out information about the doctor she’s going to, straight from someone who might be well acquainted with him.
Savannah knows a topic dismissal when she sees one so she nods and smiles before saying, “Yeah, Peter and I go way back. We were friends in college and dated a bit before me and Gray got together. He--he’s a good guy.” Maybe believes in the Capitol still too much, despite what she’s told him, but everyone has their own truth and she can’t blame Pete for adhering to it. It is really for the best that he hasn’t suffered at their hands, because the Capitol’s brand of pain isn’t something she’d wish on anyone.
If she trusts him then that makes Teagan feel better about seeing him. She doubts Savannah would put her and her baby in a dangerous predicament. She knows Demi wouldn’t either. Still...she’s in survival mode. She had to continue to be a little paranoid, to be a little fearful or she could lose everything. More than she has.
“Thank you for letting me come here and all. I know it’s dangerous for you and for everyone in here.” She wrings her hands, not sure what else she can say or do. She’s getting nervous, that prickly feeling you get before you see a doctor. Truth be told she thought she was done with speculums and probing fingers. It seemed like one of the better deals going for the end of the world but now she can’t feel anything but grateful for those that went to school and learned a thing or two.
As a lawyer, it was often Savannah’s job to present an optimistic front or try to see the best possible outcome for her client, and with Teagan the situation is no different. “We’ll be okay,” Savannah says, giving her a small smile. “You have other things to worry about right now, anyway. Should we go see if Pete is ready for you?”
“Yeah. The sooner I get it over with the better….” Teagan tells her as she stands. “Lead the way.”
