:-P
Not ready to let Demi go but knowing the longer they futzed around in here the worse it would look, Lita nodded. Lita pulled back and tried to put a smile on her face and failed miserably.
"Listen," Lita said with a heavy sigh. "If we're both going to do our part in whatever plan Adelaide has concocted, we aren't going to be able to talk for awhile." Lita avoided Demi's gaze. It was infinitely weird for her to speak like this, full of regret and anxiety over leaving her friend in the dark and vice versa. They hadn't gone a few days without speaking since they made their first acquaintance...hell, she had marched right up to the Capitol and interrupted Demi and Isaac right in flangrante delicto just because her friend neglected to text her back. It would be weird to go radio silent. Still, it would have to be about 'the greater good' for awhile, as much as Lita hated it.
"It sucks. You gotta know know that it's not what I want but it has to be that way. At least, for a little while."
Feeling strange about the awkwardness of this statement, Lita alleviated it by walking to the bathroom door and turning the knob.
"Ready as I'll ever be," Lita responded to Demi's initial question and stepped out of the bathroom. Whatever they joked about giving the patrolmen a show, Lita's heart wasn't in it and it wasn't safe. She wasn't ready to say goodbye but it was now or never.
"So, it seems your physical therapy is doing well," Lita bullshitted for anyone watching. "I can give my full recommendation for you to start doing the exercises on your own, without my supervision. Do you have any questions, Ms. Rafferty?"
It was so stupid, all of the deception and fakery, especially when there was so much that Lita wanted to do and say. But it would have to wait, all of it, until the right time and place. Until it was safe for everyone. They would just have to wait.
