"James? Complicated? You don't say," Lita deadpanned, her mind still spinning at a million miles per hour. Lita knew she wasn't the easiest person to get along with. She had exactly two people she considered actual friends. She and Demi had started off as doctor and patient but when it came down to it, there was a connection there that transcended the professional. A rare kindred spirit amidst the sea of dickheads and dumbasses she was forced to deal with on a daily basis. She cared for Demi, about Demi, and to have this coicidence shoveled on top of that special connection just sucked so goddamn hard. What were the chances that her friend had a past with the one guy she ever had real feelings for? Lita felt like the odds couldn't be more against her.
Lita flashed Demi a quick look of gratitude at the reveal that they hadn't overlapped anywhere in terms of their interactions with James. It was a small consolation on top of the massive gut punch of a revelation but it made a difference to Lita, as did the way Demi relayed the information. The two women were eerily similar; not just in their taste in men obviously but in their temperaments as well and so Lita knew that if she was feeling a gnawing jealousy, chances were her friend was experiencing a similar pang as well.
"Well, what are the chances of both him and I both being complete shit at relationships?" Lita asked, knowing the answer was a lot more probable than the newly realized secret that she and Demi shared. "Christ, it's a wonder we found each other at all."
Demi's well-intended warning of other women struck her oddly. The thought of James with other women did send her up a wall, her insides writhing with resentment and spite, but not in the same way knowing he had been with Demi did. She knew her friend was only trying to protect her dumb, idiot heart but she couldn't help but scoff in reply.
"Do you honestly think that any used-up, snot-nosed basic bitch living on that compound looking to make time with the Dog King would give me one moment's pause?" Lita asked incredulously. "That she could touch anything he and I had? Hell fucking no. But you..." Lita trailed off, appraising Demi. She paused for a beat, and then two. "You are...singular. Fierce. Formidable. For all the reasons I like you, he would have liked you. It's just...I'm not good at sharing. Never have been. But it isn't just sharing him I hate. It's sharing you."
Lita sighed and shook her head. It sounded dumb coming out of her mouth and she felt even dumber for saying it. Other people picked up and dropped friends and lovers like they were a dime a dozen. She had been like that, once. It was different now.
"Does this mean I get a crack at Isaac if you ever toss him off?" The joke is ill-timed and more than a little forced but she needs to diffuse the tension wracking her body.
