It was a struggle to ignore the way her stomach flip-flops at the idea of having to explain everything to Lita. Demi had selfishly enjoyed the fact that her friend didn’t know about all her dirty laundry, that she didn’t know the ties she held and truly hadn’t seemed to care to ask either. The doctor had accepted her simple explanation all those months ago that she had been with a raider group, she had never asked further and Demi had never offered. She should have known eventually, as with everything it seemed, the truth would have to come to light. Part of her was steeling herself for the eventual loss of this friendship, unable to convince herself of any other outcome but that.
“They would tell you they have better social skills than I do,” Demi remarked, casting a sour look back in the direction of the door and the men in black on the other side. She quirks an eyebrow when Lita pulls out her file, but plays along. A PT appointment is the ruse she used to get in here, and even though they can’t hear them, she’s all too aware of the cameras hanging in the corner of each room. “What they don’t realize is I just don’t give a shit about being polite to them.”
Demi settles herself on the edge of the coffee table and fights back the urge to flip off the surveillance camera as she answers Lita. “I’ll get to why they’re here in a moment,” she began, trying not to look at fidgeting and antsy as she felt. “They can see us. Olinger has a camera in each room, well, except the bathroom. They can’t hear us though, not unless we shout, in which case the men outside will hear us and probably come in.” So far the only time a patrolman had come into the apartment was when Nina had been by, but Demi had no doubt they could get in whenever they wanted.
Once she had explained that they were free of listening ears, she took a moment to regroup her thoughts before finally answering why she had patrolmen outside her door. “Olinger has me on house arrest because he’s a paranoid bastard,” the hatred in her tone was obvious. “You know when I told you that I was arrested and imprisoned because I was with a raider group, I kind of didn’t tell you which one,” Demi paused and looked away from Lita for a moment before focusing on her friend again. “And I might as well not drag this out now. I was living with the Hellhounds, and I was arrested helping them with a plan involving a congressman. I won’t bore you with the details unless you really want to hear them, but let's just say Olinger is keeping a real close eye on me and my trip to the LBJ made him nervous.” She left out the part about the phone, instead pausing to wait for Lita’s reaction before she dives deeper into all the details.
