Rodeo sure as hell hasn't forgotten that night. The hurt still comes to him sometimes. To this day he can't understand why they didn't tell him what they were doing, wonders if he would have known that they'd seen each other at all if they hadn't wound up needing his help. Maybe it seems like a silly thing to be hurt over. He knows his sister and his best friend are just as much family to each other as they are to him, and back home it wasn't unusual for Sarge to spend time with Adelaide, for Rodeo to come home to find his best brother already there in the trailer, or for Sarge to take her to the grocery store or out to the movies or just for a drive. That never bugged him. But they're not in Montgomery anymore, and Sarge doesn't live two trailers down and across from them these days. Every time Adelaide left the Capitol she took on enormous risk. He still believes he deserved to know. What if they had died in that cave? He'd never have known what happened to them. He might never have found their bodies, might have lived the rest of his days never knowing what happened to the only two people he could never survive without, the centers of his universe, his entire reason for fighting, his entire reason for being. The bitterness he feels over that is still sharp, and his eyes narrow slightly at the mention.
But then Sarge goes on. Rodeo listens, not sure where this is going until finally Sarge delivers his big reveal. When his best friend tells him that his sister kissed him, Rodeo's brows lift in surprise but he doesn't look angry. Instead, he looks keenly amused, a smirk cracking across his mouth that breaks the tension brought on by the subject of the near-drowning experience. A kiss is a kiss. To Rodeo it seems kind of funny. His sister ain't that different from him after all-- seeking a last hurrah, no matter where from. He's kissed many a woman just because he thought he might not live to see tomorrow. His mind does not immediately jump to the conclusion that there is anything more there, that other kisses have followed. Sarge is telling him because Sarge feels guilty about the damnedest things, but Rodeo just barks out a hoarse little laugh.
"She kissed you?" Rodeo says, dropping a hand to his ribs to clutch them as he squints an eye over the sharp stab of pain that comes with his laugh. "Addie fuckin' Belle." Rodeo shakes his head, as if his sister has done something crazy and amusing, something totally born out of duress that would surely never happen again. "I mean, I guess when you reckon you're about to bite the dust, you take what you can get."
