Esther hadn’t been half expecting Bea to actually put her song request in the playlist, so when she heard the beat drop the girl couldn’t help but laugh. This wasn’t her first drink-- in fact she wasn’t sure what number this drink was and by the way she grinned so freely it would be obvious to the rest of the crew. Sitting by herself on the bleachers, she watched the other students dance. Where Bea or Pinky had gone, she was unsure. Though at the sight of someone familiar, she couldn’t help but raise her brows before she burst out laughing again. “Whoa, bro. You doing okay?” “I… think so,” was the halting answer, muffled and echoing slightly off the metal bleachers. Danny was lying flat as a board on the row above her, practically planking, arms dangling off the edges as he enjoyed the fresh, cool metal against his cheek. It anchored him. It was nice to just get away from things, find some peace and quiet up top, where he could watch everything and listen to the music but, mostly, be very very still. “I meant to be security,” he said—he’d seen the way E had been prowling the room like some watchful jackal, and he’d meant to do the same, “but then. This happened.” “Please don't vomit on me,” she scooted a bit away from him. Clutching her red cup closer she watched her brother for a moment longer. Etty couldn't really put together a time when they had both partied together. It had mostly been Danny being overbearing, watching her every move and cutting her off by the second drink. She reached out to poke him with her free hand. Tonight it seemed he couldn't stop her even if he wanted to. His nose wrinkled. “Was it Jason?” “Jason, or Chad, or… once we all decide to get competitive it’s hard to stop, man. Have you ever played flip cup?” Then Danny seemed to realise what he was asking, and backpedalled furiously: “Not that you should! Never play flip cup, Etty. It’s. The Kwons’ downfall, I think. Our kryptonite.” “Wow, I think I’m going to play flip cup now,” she grinned at him. “You’ll have to show me how later.” He shifted, enough to roll over onto his back and stare up at the faraway ceiling of the gym. The room was spinning a bit too much for comfort, tilting around his head. He’d taken a break from drinking a while back, just to slow down and reorient himself before continuing. “How’s your night?” Etty couldn’t help but frown at her brother. “You’re fucked,” she disregarded his question entirely. Setting her cup down, her hands shifted to move one of his legs down so his foot fell flat against the floor. “This helps stop the vertigo,” she explained. “It centers you.” Picking up her cup with her left hand, her right tapped her brother’s cheek in an attempt to get him to lie his head to the side and face her. “It’s alright big bro, I won’t let you die like a rockstar. Not tonight. Make sure to lie on your side when no one’s watching you so you don’t choke on your own vomit. Bad way to be remembered.” “When did you become such an expert on drinking?” he asked suspiciously, head now craned to look at his baby sis. But then that overprotective instinct (honed and sharpened to near-paranoia over the last two years) softened, giving way to just Daniel, Danny, shed of all that annoying meddling seriousness. “Then again, I guess you are a medic. Healer. A cleric, like Lissa.” Etty scoffed. “Ugh, I’m so much better than Lissa. Lissa’s cute, but she’s a kid.” There was almost a pause of realization at her brother’s words before she rolled her eyes, but she went with it. “And that’d make you Chrom so no thanks. You’re more of a Frederick.” “Excuse you,” he mumbled, but aimlessly. The younger girl’s eyes drifted back out to the rest of the party. “On my birthday,” she was a bit hesitant to continue, “I want to get shitfaced with you.” That spurred Danny out of his stupor, and he finally pulled himself back up to a sitting position, slowly and carefully. The thought was jarring at first—Mi-suk had always sternly, fiercely stressed the importance of keeping his little sister in line and safe—but as he considered it, Danny broke into a smile. |
