The gaze she's got on Rodeo is unflinching and observant, noticing as many details as she can: the tilt of his head, his posture, the expression on his face as he talks. She's logged countless hours in the past looking for his tells and weaknesses, and another flash of deja vu hits her hard before she even knows it's coming.
Nina doesn't bother to confirm aloud whether or not he's telling the truth; that's an old game they've played before, and she still has enough trust in him to know that the respect mutual. Still, it's a lot of faith to place in a man like James, but she's already followed this through this far. She just hates knowing how easy it was for her to believe the Mayor's report of what had happened that day.
"Three others in the office, besides the one." Her mouth presses into a thin frown as she shakes her head; even if they weren't killed by James' hand, she's still aware that she could have prevented their deaths. (Or perhaps she's more guilty about the fact that she didn't even consider that as an option?) Still, it's enough to mollify her for now, so she moves on. "But I can't change the past anymore than you can. And if you truly believe there's a chance in hell that we can make this change for our city, I'm willing to do what's needed of me. Within reason, of course. But we have to do this right. It's just like you said: no more playing into the role they've cast you in. The violence, the drugs... It can't keep going on like it has been. I know y'all have been making changes, but they have to stick."
