Rodeo can't forget the scene he arrived upon in front of that Sears.
He's always had a real vivid imagination for worst-case scenarios, but this time he doesn't even have to extrapolate wildly on what could have been. If he hadn't gotten there when he did, or if they hadn't called for his help at all... He can't seem to focus on the fact that he did come, that he did help. Instead he's turning himself on the racks for the fact that the cats still prowl this city, preying on people like Olivia and Nadia as he fails to drive them out. There are a thousand dangers that could end a scout's life in an instant out there-- between the gas and geeks and unstable ruins, nothing is guaranteed. But Rodeo knows there are things worse than death. What might have happened to the two women he standing guard over now, it's a demise more terrible than death by hungry horde or scorching gas. The fate Nadia and Olivia might have suffered isn't one he fears for himself, but that doesn't make him any less acutely aware of the horror that faced them in those moments. To die is bad enough. To be robbed of your autonomy, to have your body and soul brutalized for a predator's thrills, that's something Rodeo can hardly even fathom having to fear. His understanding of what could have happened to these women makes it impossible for him to walk away from them now, as if turning away for an instant could leave them vulnerable again.
He's busy brooding when the door to the clinic opens. He's got his back to the wall and his arms crossed over his chest, and he's frowning as the nurse looks after the women. He's all tied up on the terror of what could have been when he hears a voice he knows. For a moment he thinks he must be mistaken, but when his eyes flash to the side and he sees Nina there at the door his expression clears from frustration to wonder. "Holy shit," escapes him on a breath, and he's off the wall and in that doorway in an instant. He doesn't wait for Nina's approval before he sweeps her into a hug, pulling her in to squeeze her to his chest. It's been six years, but his fondness for Nina has never faded. No one's ever done for him what she did-- he's used to waging his own wars, but the enemy Nina battled against was one Rodeo couldn't take on himself. She brawled viciously for his life. She was his last hope, and though they lost, Rodeo's love for her hasn't wavered. It ain't like they really had a chance, anyway.
Rodeo hugs Nina for several beats, then finally releases her and steps through the doorway out into the hall outside the clinic. "Shit, Lady Luck, ain't you a sight. My sister's never gonna believe this," he says, still a little winded from his surprise.
