Phone Call
Who: Sam Victorio and Fletcher Charleston
When: Tuesday
What: Asking for help. This is awkward...
-ring-
"Yes?"
"You haven't changed your number."
"Unless you've found a way to kill me over the phone, it wasn't really necessary."
"I heard someone tried again. I'm glad to hear they didn't succeed."
"You heard right." -pause- "What do you want, Sam?"
-pause- "I need your help."
"You what?"
"There's a list out. I'm assuming you know?"
"I was informed, yeah. That was a bold move on your part, putting all those names out there like that."
"Believe me, I didn't have anything to do with it. I'm pretty sure I'm not even supposed to know about it."
"That's fascinating, but I don't see why you need me for anything. In case you haven't noticed, I'm not taking jobs anymore."
"No, but you might know who is. I need to know who else has that list, Fletcher. Or..." -trying not to sound desperate- "Someone told you about it. Someone helped get you pardoned. You obviously have new contacts."
"What the hell is going on, Sam? Why's this so important?"
"Because everything has changed. If the list came from here, and I'm sure it did, then they've started putting our own people on the list."
"I didn't get the whole list, I was just told that I was on it. Who're they after? You?"
"No. Not officially, but I may as well be on it too. They're after Jude Hyler... and it's my fault he got into this to begin with."
"Ah." -long pause- "I've got no reason to help you, you know that."
"Yes you do."
"You went after my wife, my brother. I'd leave you twisting in the wind just so you wouldn't have a chance to do it again."
"I got you out of prison. I covered up for you and your defection as much as I could, despite having one very pissed off Joker with a dead boyfriend to deal with, and Charleston..." -her voice drops- "...I've had the shot on you. I didn't take it."
"Then it sounds like we're even." -sighs- "Bloody hell. What are the chances of them following through on this hit for...whatever his name was?"
-relieved- "Jude. I don't know. He's not high profile, but compared to the rest of the list... he's an easy target."
-he can't help but laugh- "So you want to toss away everything you have, any promises you made to the Resistance, because they want one man dead."
"Oh shut up." -she knows he's right though- "They aren't the same. They killed Hughes. They're putting hits on our own people. This isn't the Resistance I imagined."
"Thing haven't been the same for a long time. It's about time you saw that." -pause- "Sam, you know what it means if you run. You better be fucking sure."
"I know what it means if I don't too. I'm sure." -pause- "Besides, I have access to their databases and all of CORE's old files. You don't know anyone who might be interested, do you?"
"I might. I'll ask around." -another laugh- "It really changes things when it's no longer just about you, doesn't it?"
"It was never just about me. But... yes. You're right."
"You better hope he's worth it, because things aren't going to get any easier. What do you need from me?"
"They never do. But at some point they can't get worse." -that was more to herself than to him- "I need to know if there's anyone you know who might be filling those contracts. The list out, we can't get that back in the box. And I need someone Jude can go to with information to leak, or to trade, if it comes to that."
"If you didn't know about it, then it must be freelancers taking on those hits. Meaning it could be anyone with an action hero in their head who owns a gun. They're impossible to keep track of. As for sharing that information...I may know a few people. Give me a few days, and I'll see what I can do."
"Okay. let me know? Or if you hear anything else about the list, or if anyone else tries to kill you..." -that's a joke, right?- "And... thanks. I know you don't have any reason to help me. Jude deserves better than this though. It's too bad you two weren't part of this at the same time, you'd probably like each other."
"I will. And you're welcome. I just hope you know what you're doing."
"Don't I always?"
"Well, I used to think so." -he's teasing. probably.-
"That's something. Watch your back, Fletcher. I'll be in touch."
"Goodbye, Sam."
