Interview
[The host panel of The Talk is winding down from their round table discussion of the day’s headlines, ending with the latest on the presidential primaries. There is, of course, heated discussion about which candidate they, as a mother, feel will provide the best future for their children. The moderator wraps it up and segues into the next section of the program smoothly.]
“And speaking of politics, we have some special guests with us today. Please welcome the Argentine ambassador to the U.S., Federico de Oliveira, and his gorgeous wife, Graciela!”
[The audience cheers as the couple walk in. As usual, the two are gorgeous together, Federico in a sharp suit. It’s Graciela that all eyes are on, though, because after staying completely out of the public eye since speculation began about her illness, there’s something noticeably different about her. The bump distorting the loose dress she wears is still small, but there’s no hiding it anymore. She is obviously pregnant, and decently far along in it. The moderator stands to welcome them and offer them a seat, giving Graciela a hug as she does so.]
[Moderator:] “Oh my goodness, you look fantastic. So, I think the question we all want answered right now, when is the baby due?”
[Graciela, accent thick:] “The middle of May, but my mamá is sure I’ll be late.”
[M:] “That puts you at, what, twenty-seven weeks? You’re still so skinny!”
[G, laughing:] “I do not feel so! The doctors say that we are healthy, it’s all the way I’m carrying.”
[M:] “Some women get all the luck. And what about you, daddy, how do you feel about this?”
[F:] “I’m more then excited. Laughs. When Ela told me that she was pregnant, I wanted to immediately tell the whole world about it. Luckily, saner heads prevailed.”
[M:] “Why did you keep it a secret for such a long time?”
[F:] “I think we were both worried about blowing the horn before making sure everything was going to be all right. This will be our first child, and I guess you can say we’re already nervous parents. Pauses. I’m a nervous parent. Ela has always been calmer than I am.”
[M:] “Could you have also been worried about any problems regarding your, uh… other status?”
[G, tilting her head to the side, hair sliding over her pale, slender neck:] “I do not understand what this means, I am sorry.”
[M:] “I mean your… identity as a reincarnate. Does that add some additional concerns for you?”
[G:] “No, not at all. Why would this be a concern?”
[M, growing visibly uncomfortable now:] “I think we all know being a reincarnate is a hot topic right now, and there’s been some talk about the two of you having some confrontations with another group from your… source, is that how you say it?”
[G:] “Yes, it is. These rumors, they are… blown up? For them to hurt our baby because of a silly fight, that would be…” [She looks to her husband, as though she’s lost the words.]
[F:] “It would be insane. We might have our differences, and yes, we don’t get along with them. But for them to hurt our child over a few disagreements? That would just be barbaric.”
[M:] “Do you have a worry about that? Them hurting your child?”
[F:] “Absolutely not. They’re good people over there, from what I’ve heard. [Has to work hard not to smirk.] The specific people aren’t ones I worry about. It’s really more the groups of people that I worry more about. But this isn’t a congressional meeting, I don’t think anyone here wants to listen to the kind of things I talk about at work.” [Smiles and looks at his wife.]
[G:] “I do not mind, but I think I may be an unfair judge.”
[M:] “I’m sure we all want to hear more, but we’re going to have to take a break now. When we come back, our guests have promised to tell us all about how they plan on raising a child in their culture’s traditions while living in an entirely different country. Stay tuned!”
[Everyone is still smiling, charming and happy, when the show cuts to commercial.]
