phonecall.
Who: Fletcher Charleston and Colin Ford.
What: Fletcher is old school, so he calls Colin. Awkward future brother-in-laws are awkward.
When: Friday night.
-riiiing ring riiiing-
-the phone picks up, there's a brief fumble and then a cough- "....Hello?"
"Colin Ford?"
"Uh. Yeah? Who's this?" -His voice is low, and a lot more strained then usual-
"A friend of your sisters. Did I catch you at a bad time?"
-He clears is throat, immediately more alert then before- "Er, no, not a bad time. What's going on, is she okay?" -There's a slight hint of panic in his voice-
"Yes, she's fine. I just, ehm..." -he clears his throat, too- "I have a question for you."
-A long pause- ".... Alright. Though I have to tell you, I'm a little confused as to just who in the hell my sister would know with such a thick Scottish accent."
"I apologize, I thought you'd have had a closer look at my file by now."
"... Charleston. Right. I did, actually, but ah... it's been a weird week. Not myself." -another pause- "You said my sister's fine?"
"Perfectly fine. Irritated at me over real estate, but other than that...." -pause- "She wants to marry me."
"... Come again?"
"That was my initial reaction as well. It's not a step I want to take without speaking to you about it."
"So... you..." -there's a strained pause, Colin is really trying to process thiss- "What, are you asking me for permission? I'm not her father."
"I know you're not. But you are the only member of her family that I'm in contact with."
"And what happens if I say no?"
"Then you get to be the one to tell Gemma." -pause- "I won't do it if it's going to upset her relationship with her family."
-the other end of the line is silent for a full minute before Colin exhales loudly- "You really are determined to be the most likable wanted fugitive and therefore a pain in my conscience filled ass, aren't you."
"I'm not doing it on purpose, I promise." -sighs- "I love Gemma. I'll do whatever I can to make her happy, even if that means leaving the country to marry her. It will never be official to anyone else, but I'd like to know that you won't be upset with her for it."
"I'd have to be the world's shittiest brother if I got mad at her for getting married. Never mind that it's to-" -He cuts himself off, there's no point in going down that road again- "Fine. If you're really that determined to stick around, I guess I can't stop you. Hurt her and I'll stab you with a spoon."
"It wouldn't take much to stop me, if you put your mind to it. But thank you. I'll take good care of her, I promise."
"Good to know. But I don't think I've sunk quite that low yet. It's a rare thing to find someone you want to spend the rest of your life with. You should treasure it while you have it. And never take advantage of it." -His tone was meant as something along the lines of an 'or else' threat but there was a hint of sadness in his tone that he quickly covered up with another throat clearing.- "So. I guess congratulations are in order."
"I wouldn't dream of it. I was nearly married once before, you know. It's not something I would ever take for granted." -short laugh- "It's Gemma you should congratulate. She's the one that asked."
"... Well that figures. Sorry Fletcher, marrying Wonder Woman means you're in for a life time of various forms of emasculation. Comes with the Amazonian package."
"Believe me, I'm not just finding this out. I guess I'm just lucky she does it rarely."
"The fact that you're not already running for the hills is pretty impressive. Guess you get a few points for that."
"Wouldn't dream of it. She's a remarkable woman."
"Then maybe you'll convince me yet that you actually deserve her."
"That will probably come some time after I convince myself that I do. I couldn't tell you what I did to deserve this."
"Unfortunately that's not an answer we ever usually find. it is what it is. At least you're not a tool like the last one."
"So it's not just in my fond imaginings that he was a complete wanker?"
"Fuck no, I hated the pampered asshole right from the start. It was Gemma who needed convincing. I find myself actually hoping that I'm wrong about the guy she's with this time. She deserves to be happy."
"I hope you're wrong, too. All I want is for her to be happy. When she's not outright pissed at me, she seems to be."
"Yeah, that's usually how it goes. Believe me, if she wasn't getting mad at you, that's when you should be worried. She doesn't think I pay attention, but I do."
"You know, I'm relieved that you're taking this so well. I expected a bit more yelling."
"Any other week? Yeah, there'd be a lot of yelling. Or at least a good five minutes of it. As it is, I don't have the energy for that sort of bullshit. Luck must actually be on your side."
"And here I thought I couldn't get any luckier." -pause- "I suppose I should let Gemma know that you're not completely against this."
"Yeah, you do that. Go be happy and engaged, you're both kinda keeping me from getting drunk right now and unless you want me to take back my blessing..."
"No, that's okay. Go, ehm, enjoy your drinking."
"Yeah. I will." -A short pause- "Thanks for having the guts to call me. Can't exactly hate you for that."
-laughs- "Thanks for not threatening to kill me for wanting to marry your sister."
"Nah, really not my style. Dick's, maybe, but we don't always agree on everything."
"I can relate." -pause- "I should let you go. Thanks for everything."
"No problem." -a thoughtful pause- "Anytime."
-not sure how to take that, so there's a pause before he hangs up-
