Phone Call Who: Sam Victorio and Fletcher Charleston When: While Fletcher and Julian are taking care of Eli and the Resistance is on their way to Gemma's house. What: Getting his side.
-ominous ring-
-stares at his phone for a few seconds before answering- "Hello, Sam."
"What happened?"
"Giving me the benefit of the doubt?"
"Let's say that I am."
"Hughes should keep his new recruits on a shorter leash."
"I agree. I hear you had a run in with Bryant."
"You heard right."
"You gonna tell me your side? I don't think you'll like the story I got from Strange."
"I don't think you'll like the story you get from me, to be quite honest."
"Try me."
"He followed me. He had a knife. Probably would have walked away if he hadn't decided to attack."
"Why would he attack you?"
"Wasn't me that he attacked."
-matter of fact- "It was the DA."
"Technically, she's on the assistant DA."
"How much does she know?"
"Not a damn thing about any of you, other than what she already got out of your files."
"I don't think I believe you."
"I don't know that I expected you to, but if I'd told her anything, don't you think the police would have knocked down the doors already?"
"If you hadn't told her anything, wouldn't she have hauled your ass back to jail by now?"
"You know, I ask myself that every day."
"Don't screw with me, Fletcher. I'm giving you a chance to explain yourself."
-frustrated sigh- "I've been seeing her since we escaped, Sam. I haven't told her a goddamn thing. I don't spy for her, she doesn't spy for me, that was the deal. She doesn't even know any of us are in Los Angeles."
-pause, wants to believe it- "You really expect me to buy that?"
"Why the fuck would I lie about this? I've got no reason to want to turn on you. If I was going to do that, I'd have done it years ago, when I still had a chance at a fucking life outside of this shit."
"This is a mess, you know. Strange told everyone. They believe her, and you aren't denying it."
"No, I'm not. I wasn't about to lose anyone else to this. I don't expect you'd understand that."
-her voice is oddly strained, she sounds more... human than before- "No, I'm sure I wouldn't." -long pause- "We're nearly to her house. If you're still there, I suggest you get out now."
"God damn it, there's no reason to go there, not now." -aside: 'Get in the car, they're already on their way.'- "I guess we can consider this my early retirement."
"I guess we'll see if she backs up your story."
-dead serious- "So much as touch her, lay one fucking finger on her, and I'll kill you."
"Now I believe you." -pause- "I'm sorry. I'll do what I can."
