David managed to catch sight of Tali right as she waved before turning tail and running, which didn't surprise him. Figures. He hadn't been counting on her alliance anyway, or really wanting it, so that was fine by him. He would either survive this or he wouldn't, but he had a pretty good feeling that it wouldn't be dependent on her either way. Unless, of course, she decided to literally stab him in the back later, assuming he survived this altercation with the female tribute from District 1.
He was quick to turn his attention back to the other tribute before she could get the jump on him, gripping his machete tighter and getting a better look at that spear. It was a longer weapon, so it had the advantage of reaching him before his weapon could reach her, but that was okay. Dean wasn't exactly a disciplined fighter, but he could sure as hell improvise.
Her kick sent him stumbling, and he threw his body to the side to reassert his balance and try to keep from face planting onto the ground. He landed on his knees and elbows a few feet away, grunting as he scrambled to get back to his feet and swung out with his blade as he lurched closer to her in his attempts to stand back up. The jagged edge of the machete caught her arm in a clean, shallow slice, and David laughed darkly. "Anyone ever tell you, you talk too much? Seriously, lady. Shut the hell up."
