These Dreams
Who: Lucy Murphy Where: A hospital ICU When: During the virus outbreak What: A strange visit, possibly a dream but is it? Rating: Low Status: Narrative
Lucy was going to die. She knew that as well as she knew her own name. She was going to die and that mean that Kaylee was too or did it? Would she just be able to leave and find another person to live with? Lucy wasn't sure she liked that idea since she loved Kaylee but it wasn't fair that they both should die.
She sighed and opened her eyes. Everything was fuzzy, she'd been in and out of consciousness for days now and she had no idea what was real and what wasn't. Right now she was on the dialysis machine and would be for the next three hours. It sucked. Didn't hurt, it just meant that she had to lie still. Not that she could move too much even if she wanted to. Closing her eyes once more she gave in to Kaylee's voice.
We aint gonna die, Lucy. Kaylee said. I know it looks bad but we ain't gonna die.
"How do you know that?" Lucy replied in her head. "The doctors say my kidneys aren't workin'. That's why I'm on this stupid machine. If my kidneys don't start back, that's it."
Simon will make sure we're okay. I know he will Kaylee sounded pretty sure of herself and Lucy mentally rolled her eyes. She was used to Kaylee going on and on about Simon but she'd long since given up hope that they'd ever find him.
"He's not here. You might as well accept that. These doctors are good. They'll do what they can but we're not going to find Simon." Kayle didn't have anything to say to that. She was probably pissed off and Lucy let herself drift off to sleep.
It was just a few moments later when she heard a soft voice. "Lucy?" She opened her eyes and saw someone standing by her bed. She'd never met him but she'd seen the show and she knew the face of Simon Tam when she saw it. Her mouth popped open and she could say anything.
"Are you real?" she said. Of course he wasn't real, she was dremaing.
Sort of? he replied wrinkling his brow. Right now I'm not but I will be. Kaylee was right Lucy, you're going to be okay and when you are, we'll see each other again. I knew Kaylee was out there He smiled and Lucy had to agree with what Kaylee had always said, he was damn cute. Of course I won't look like this when you see me again but you know that."
"How'll I know it's you?" she asked.
Kaylee will know," Simon told her. You trust her, right?" Lucy nodded. She did trust Kaylee, she hadn't been wrong yet. Then just be patient, okay.
"Wait..." Lucy could tell he was about to leave. "How will I find you?"
"You won't have to", he said. "I'll find you."
Suddenly Lucy opened her eyes and was back in his hospital room wondering what the hell had just happened to her. There was a doctor standing over her, a cute one, and she looked up at him. "Simon?" she asked. The doctor laughed. "No, I'm Doctor Graves, but you've been calling me Simon for three days. I think I should change my name. It's good to see you with your eyes open. I have some good news for you Lucy. You're gong to be just fine. Your kidneys are doing better. I think we can cut your treatsments back to once a day and maybe stop them in a day or two. How does that sound?"
"It sounds good," Lucy said. "Thank you." She gave the doctor a weak smile as he left the room and then tuned in to Kaylee. "We're gonna be okay," she told her.
"Told ya so" Kaylee replied, just a little bit too smugly in Lucy's opinion.
