"Apparation is a particular way of doing space magic that moves you from place A to B. I'm not explaining the underlying theory not because you're stupid, but because I don't remember the technical details of something I learnt for a licensure test half a lifetime ago. It's just something I do to get around now. Side-along is when you bring someone who can't Apparate with you."
Charlie drew in a breath and let it out.
"I'm trying not to treat you like you're stupid. I don't know what you don't know. Talking about magic to you is kind of like you trying to explain colour to someone who was born blind. It's not that they're stupid, it's that you don't even know where to start talking about it. Magic may be the coolest thing you've ever heard of, but it's just how I live.
"I know you live differently: there are still boxes of plugs and wires and things my dad left when he died in the shed behind my house. He thought aeroplanes and fellytones were the coolest things ever. Just like that's normal to you, what I am is normal to me. I'm trying to meet you halfway here--I just don't know what halfway is."
