Who: Minister for Magic, Regulus Black
When: 1 March 1998 ; 15:00
Where: The atrium of the Ministry of Magic, broadcast live on WWN; at Hogwarts, all students will be asked to gather in their common rooms for this special announcement from the Minister. The text of the announcement is available directly after.
What: An announcement.
Since my appointment as Minister for Magic in March 1990, we've had the opportunity to make several important changes to the way we live in wizarding Britain. We've expanded Diagon Alley into the space formerly occupied by Knockturn Alley, offering wizards and witches opportunities to open and maintain their own storefronts. We've passed a new series of rules making it necessary for half-breeds to register with the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, thus protecting the livelihoods of both them and the rest of society. War criminals have been released from Azkaban, rehabilitated, and are now functioning once again in our society. We've pioneered legislation that offers sanctuary for those escaping foreign governments. We've hosted hundreds of thousands of wizardfolk from around the world at the exciting 422nd Quidditch World Cup, which returned home to us with an exhilarating win by Ireland. Of course, we've done too much to go through everything, but what remains is that we're thankful for every witch and wizard whose work touched the Ministry and made it possible for us to come to so many accomplishments. [A pause] Now, seven years have passed since I was appointed your Minister for Magic, and as is custom, we're calling for a general election. British and Irish citizens who are of age by 18 April 1998 are welcome to submit their name for candidacy. Once the pool of candidates have been vetted and finalized, a general election will be held on 18 April beginning at 0700 at the following polling locations: Diagon Alley, Hogsmeade, Godric's Hollow. All citizens who are of age will be eligible to vote for the candidate of their choice. I look forward to the coming months and to see the shape that our lives take in the future. Regulus A.
