Who: Devon and Luna
What: Sweet first kiss?
Where: Down by the lake.
When: Saturday, Feb 21st
Rating: So cute you won't be able to can
Status: Threaded, Incomplete

It had been a week since the Valentine's Feast, and Devon still hadn't quite come down. Luna had agreed to go as his date, and given the length of time he'd spent wishing and hoping and praying for her to even notice him, it had been a pretty exciting night.

Today, he wanted to see her again. He had already been down to the kitchen and charmed the house elves into providing him with a basket of food (charmed with smiles and polite words, not his wand, that is). Now he made his way back up to Ravenclaw Tower to where Luna was sitting in the common room with a book.

"Miss Lovegood?" he said softly, approaching her with a little half grin. "Would you do me the honor of joining me on a picnic this ...sort of fine afternoon?"

Luna was reading another Care of Magical Creatures book. She had just gotten another one of Newt Scamander's books, and was just a few pages in when Devon came up to the common room and distracted her.

She finished the sentence she was on before marking the page, setting the book down and looking up at Devon, then the basket, and back to Devon's face.

"Oh." She replied, standing up and giving him a smile."That sounds rather lovely, let me grab my cloak." She was already dressed in quite a few layers, but she knew it was going to be cold outside. Grabbing up her cloak from her room, she dashed back down to Devon.

"Alright then. I'm ready."

As they made their way down the many stairs and out of the castle, Devon agonized over the decision for long moments before reaching out and taking her hand gently. He smiled over at her as they left the castle and stepped out into the chilly air.

"I had fun, last week," he said. "You looked so beautiful, and you were a great date. I was just waiting for my homework to let up a bit so we could do something together again."

Luna was not the sort of person who would make a first move, because these were not things she thought about. But when he took her hand, she literally looked down at it and watched their fingers intertwine. And then she smiled.

This was nice.

Devon expressed his feelings about their Valentines date, and Luna nodded her head in agreement. "It was a very good time, I think. Dancing with you was very nice." She gave him a smile and continued walking, her thumb brushing lightly against his hand.

"You were dressed very handsomely. And you sang beautifully."

Feeling his heart leap as they held hands, Devon grinned to himself. The lake grew nearer, and he nodded toward it. "I thought we could eat down there, and watch the Squid and its ballet," he said.

So when they reached a good spot, he reluctantly reclaimed his hand and spread out the blanket he'd brought down, and set out the food, then sat down. "I hope you like it," he said. "I asked the elves to pack something you'd like."

She, too, was a little disappointed that their hands were no longer together, but there was a blanket to be had and all that. She sat down next to him when it was all said and done, looking down at the food.

"That's very kind of you, Devon. There's bacon sandwiches and Cornish pasties? Both are my favorite." Of course, the House Elves knew that. She spent a great deal of time talking to them.

She picked up the sandwich first and ate, very much like she would any other day. Luna did not change her eating habits just because this was a sort of date like encounter.

"This is very thoughtful, I'm quite glad you found time to spend with me."

"Ah, it's nothing," Devon blushed. "I'm just glad you like it."

He tucked in, taking a sandwich and a bottle of butterbeer. When he'd finished, he cleared his throat. There was something he'd been meaning to ask.

"So... you never said," he began awkwardly. "I mean... I told you that I fancied you, and you said we should get to know each other better. It's been a week, and we've had that date at the feast, and now this, and..." He took a deep breath.

"Luna, do you want to be my girlfriend?"

Luna didn't know quite what to say. It was weird, not knowing what to say. Luna usually had a lot of topics she could prattle on about in any situation, an answer for just about any question or thing she had been asked (or not asked, which was a more frequent occurrence). But this had her stumped.

After a brief pause, and because she didn't terribly want to hurt his feelings or anything, she finally replied.

"Oh I mean, I suppose that would be very lovely but I think that might be fast for me." She said softly, staring down at her half-eaten sandwich, not wanting to hurt his feelings.

"Most people don't even know how to correctly pronounce my name and I've just started finding that some people can be good friends, I don't know if I'm... a good candidate for being a girlfriend just yet." It was new to her, the whole idea of dating was new - she just didn't know how to do it yet.

"But I would still like to spend more time with you."

"Oh."

In his head, Devon had imagined that she would say yes, immediately, and that they would move on to sharing their first kiss here by the lake with the squid in attendance. Now they were sort of just looking at each other over the blanket.

"Well, I mean... of course, if it's too soon," he said awkwardly, trying to hide his disappointment. He'd never push. He never wanted to be the kind of bloke his mother told him about, who came up to her and tried it on and didn't want to take no for an answer until she had to get rude with them. Those sorts of blokes... well, they made his blood boil. So if being his friend was all Luna was ready for...

"I'd like that too," he finished off gratefully. "We can still be friends, yeah?"

It was much too soon. Luna had hardly had time to wrap her mind around the idea of being fancied, let alone if she fancied him back - what that meant in the difference of just being good friends, and what being someone's girlfriend might even mean. It was all a bit much for Luna.

"Of course we can still be friends." She replied, giving him another bright smile. Nothing really got Luna down - sometimes she felt sad, thinking about things like her Sneakoscope being broken, her mother dying, and feeling lonely. But she often went back to feeling happy just the same, not long after those bouts of sadness.

So even if this was a bit awkward, that went right past her. Nothing was very awkward for Luna, though it tended to be for the people who hung around Luna, or put up with her presence at least. "Did I say something wrong again?"

"No, nothing wrong," Devon hastened to reassure her. "It's just... well, you know I fancy you, Luna. I think you're the most beautiful girl at this school, and the nicest, easily. And I love the way you love animals. I don't know any other girls who would come and see the squid like this." He smiled at her.

"I just... I had this stupid idea that you'd fancy me back, and we'd kiss. It's not stupid that I like you... it's stupid that I built it up in my head and just assumed you'd like me back. I assumed too much. I didn't think about how you'd feel."

"Oh." She listened to what he'd had to say, and thought it over. It was quite nice, the idea of it all. But Luna couldn't make the nice picture of what he was saying fit with herself in the other part. Fancying him back. It's not like she didn't like him - as she'd told Michael, she did think he was very nice - both as a person, and looks wise.

But with Luna, everything sort of went at a snail's pace. She picked up on things quickly, but she didn't get into the swing of these personal things in the same sort of way.

"I suppose I'm not like most girls my age, or even younger. I spent quite a lot of my time here alone until Ginny became my friend. Michael is like a brother to me, and I like him quite a bit. I have other people who say they are friends, too, and I think they are good friends, but I'm..." She was struggling to find the word. She'd never had to explain this sort of thing before.

"Just different, I guess."
