MACNAIRS: MACABRE MONSTERS OR MERELY MISUNDERSTOOD?
By Rita Skeeter, Staff Writer
In recent times the Daily Prophet has made a point of informing the public about the facts behind certain events, no matter how alarming or uncomfortable those facts are. We have been hindered in those efforts by intransigent educators and an editor spotlessly diligent in his responsibility to the Ministry and the law.
The latest news rocking the wizarding world is the trial of the Macnair family for their crimes against our society. Walden Macnair, a well known ex-Death Eater, caused a commotion at the Godric's Hollow Autumn Carnival last year, but his involvement with the attacks would not be found out until after something even more scandalous happened: Macnair's daughter Lavinia, 16, was caught red handed attempting to poison teachers at Hogwarts School and was summarily expelled.
Lavinia's expulsion from Hogwarts school was the first such expulsion to occur in some decades. As far as is readily available from public records, the last time someone was expelled was in 1943. After a series of attacks on muggle born children, Rubeus Hagrid was discovered to have opened the fabled Chamber of Secrets, unleashing the horror within on his classmates. Ironically, Hagrid himself is a half-breed, the spawn of a wizard of questionable morals and a giantess.
And now, more than fifty years later, comes the expulsion on Lavinia Macnair. But Hagrid's transgression at least was something of a surprise. Young Macnair comes from a family of Death Eaters who were, and evidently still are, loyal to the concept of pureblood supremacy.
Sometime on or around the 3rd of December, a member of staff walked in on Lavinia Macnair pouring an unknown substance into the various open vessels in the professor's quarters. Though the identity of the professor in question is still unknown, what is known is that upon discovery, the young Macnair assaulted the professor: perhaps in an attempt to escape. Professor McGonagall herself provided the following statement, further cementing her reputation for refusing to cooperate with the press, even on matters pertaining to the safety of our world as a whole.
"All details pertaining to the case brought against the Macnair family are confidential and proprietary to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement."
It is probable that the young Macnair was handed off to her parents that same night, and the Daily Prophet reported early in the morning on the 4th of December that she had been expelled.
With his daughter so firmly in the public eye, it was natural that Walden Macnair himself come under scrutiny, and it was for this reason that his involvement with the Godric's Hollow attacks came to light. Ministry officials putting two and two together accused the elder Macnair of furnishing his daughter with the foreign substance, which was later proven to be a deadly poison - but the origin of the vial has not been confirmed.
It may only be speculation and rumor, but sources inside the ministry remarked that it was entirely likely that the whole Macnair family would be bundled off to Azkaban, each for their own individual crimes against our society.
For a look at other Hogwarts expulsions and the reasons behind them, including the very first expulsion (a member of only the second class of Hufflepuffs), see page 4.
