What: Dueling Lessons
Where: Hogwarts Great Hall
When: Friday Evening
Status: IC/OOC

The Great Hall was set up as it normally would be for Dueling Club, with a long platform down the center of the hall in place of the normal dining tables. Remus will begin the evening with a brief introduction about their purpose here tonight. What he doesn't say, but some may realize, is that he doesn't expect any of the students to really win against the Professors who have volunteered. They can certainly land some well-timed strikes against them, yes, but the unspoken point here is to create a deliberately unfair playing field. Only one duel takes place at a time. Remus will observe each duel, and is happy to offer con/crit afterward individually. After all duels are completed, Remus is available for further questions about defense and dueling, and is happy to recommend further reading on the subject.

Below are comment threads for each NPC professor, with a short summary of their primary dueling style or motives. If other PC professors wish to start their own comment thread, they may, of course, do so! If your students wants to duel a professor, just comment to the thread and we can either IC/OOC back and forth or just decide results straight off. (Results generally being, as noted above, that professors will likely win, but students get to put up a good fight in the meantime.)

An older witch, some might count her out, but her stinging hexes will leave you wincing for days.

Of course, ghosts can't duel. ;) But Professor Binns was in attendance, and could be heard giving his own commentary about how dueling was done more properly back in his day.

He is accustomed to using his short stature to his advantage, and proves to be a smaller target than most are likely accustomed to facing. He uses repurposed charms rather than hexes, primarily.

Hannah requests to duel Professor Flitwick. She is clearly nervous in her actions, and concentrates mainly on her shield charm and an occasional Expelliarmus. Flitwick finishes the duel with Tarantallegra, and Hannah surrendered before skipping off the stage.

Blocks every hex thrown at him, but does not fire back much in kind. Focuses on defensive rather than offensive spells. Does not use any non-verbal spells.

Theodore grows increasingly frustrated about two things: 1. His inability to get through at Kettleburn. 2. Kettleburn's reluctance on using any offense spells. His frustration is evident to everyone. After all, Theodore is better than this.

So eventually, in the heat of the moment, he throws a curse he learned from his sister that stems from the Dark Arts. It's intent is to blind, but as he barely gets through Kettleburn's defense, it instead burns one eye with very momentary blindness but nothing at all lasting, which would have been the intent and, as powerful as it was, might have done so if it had hit it's Mark.

I think Hermione would try and pair herself up with the Headmistress. Not only would it be tough but it would give her an idea what to expect. She doesn't have a death wish but she probably knows that the Headmistress wouldn't go easy on her, just because she is the Head Girl.

Hermione would try a different types of disarming and a few charms meant for protection and defensive (some she learned while reading books not meant for class). She will try non-verbal spells and see how that goes.

Speaks every spell aloud and clearly enunciated to allow for proper reaction time and doesn't send any hexes that might injure a student. Very patient and nurturing.

Due to the nature of her class, Anthony doesn't have any idea what to expect from Professor Vector which is one of the reasons he requested her. He begins cautiously and defensively, but doesn't maintain either tactic for long. He manages a few nonverbal spells himself, but he isn't very good at anticipating or defending against them.

Zoe chooses to duel Vector for two reasons - 1. she thinks it'd be her best competition outside of Mcgonagall and Zoe isn't fool hard enough to even attempt that, and 2. she wants to learn non-verbal spells better, and there's no better way to learn it than to fight it.

Zoe read up on some great defensive spells, including a nonverbal blocking spell, because her earlier talk with Sirius did give her more insight on how best to fight, and defensive spells is the best way to prolong death, so she wanted to give that a go during the first duel, just to test her own ability and her own reflexes.

Zoe has fast reflexes, that allows her to react without hesitation, which are beneficial for the spells she read up on. After the duel ends, Zoe would be interested in badgering Vector more about the nonverbal spells she'd used during it.

Mandy's generally much better at bookwork than practical applications thereof but she'd done quite well on her DADA course and although she briefly considered challenging Headmistress McGonagall, she later decided that it would be a bit ambitious. She'd then considered Professor Lupin, given dueling was somewhat connected to his course before realising that he seemed to be taking a step back. So instead she opted for Professor Vector, one of her favourites and she was sure a challenge.

With most of her experience limited to Defence (that was the class, afterall) Mandy was far more capable with her defensive spells. Mandy's reflexes were quite quick but she considered her moves carefully so a bit slower to attack.

Isn't trying very hard. Ha. Begins with verbal spells and moves to non verbal if he thinks you're up for it. Mostly sends disarming spells so be prepared to chase your wand a lot.

Professor Lupin - Dueling
[info]mindwithteeth
2015-01-23 04:22 pm UTC (link)
Though his intent was to be the facilitator of the evening, if any student requested it, he would step up onto the dueling platform himself. (If he did, he'd expect Sirius or Lily to provide con/crit afterward.) He keeps to a very "formal" style, and doesn't move about very much- standing sideways, with his wand hand facing the opponent, he offers a smaller target. (Though not as small as Flitwick, of course! ;)

I think Susan would feel most comfortable dueling Professor Lupin. She's not Hermione, but she's really very impressive in her own right. She spends the duel attempting non verbal spells with general success, as well as shielding herself against and disarming Lupin with varied but not always awful results!

Professor Wilkes
[info]prunesandprisms
2015-01-23 06:00 pm UTC (link)
Is not in any way an offensive fighter, but is an experienced witch with a store of defensive spells. Having family members in the DMLE means she was encouraged to learn to defend herself in case. She uses primarily disarming and defensive spells, and her few offensive spells focus on the environment as a way to slow down or distract her opponent. As a result students may find themselves slipping on ice patches or stepping in mud or quicksand. She avoids direct hexes.

Ron chooses Professor Wilkes because he figures as Divination professor she won't be all that good at this. He's a bit clumsy with his form and gets flustered easily but he definitely isn't the worst one there.

After Lena's duel with Professor Black, she stood and watched the Weasley/Wilkes duel, noticing how many defensive spells she used, and raising an eyebrow at the few offensive spells she sees. When the meeting was over, Lena approached Professor Wilkes and asked for a little tutoring, in a sort of "that thing you did there, can you teach me that" kind of way.

Professor Potter

Looks may be deceiving, for like Sirius and Remus, Lily has been in her own share of duels, even against several Death Eaters and the Dark Lord himself. The years have have dulled her reflexes, but she's been working sharpening them up again.

Her strengths lie in defence work. Nothing gets by her -- she would rather focus on that and let students hone their offensive strategies first and then perhaps change it up midway through.
