The Daily Prophet, Letters to the Editor, July 20th, 1998

Less then three months ago, we buried our beloved son, Gideon. He was murdered by Lady Noir, a criminal who has terrorized our people for far too long.

This weekend, we were heartbroken to hear that the criminal had struck again. Our hearts go out to the family of Allison Boot, who are starting down a long path that we have been on since Lady Noir targeted our oldest son.

She was not the only one attacked by Lady Noir that evening. Our younger son heard the cries for help of Madame Boot and, like any well-brought-up British wizard, responded to see if he could help. He and his friend Professor Black interrupted the attack, but were unable to stop it.

This was not, as some have said, vigilantism, but common-sense Good Samaritanism. The British tradition of 'the hue-and-cry' means something, even in this modern day. Wizards try to help people who scream for help, or else we are not the Britain I grew up in, and which I had the honor to represent in the diplomatic corps for many years.

Now Mister Scrimgeour has mistaken the victims and witnesses for the assailants, and is rushing to try them in the press. While I respect his experience and long service to the nation, I feel compelled to remind him that Britain is a nation of laws, not men. This is not the late war, and he cannot ride roughshod over the rights of wizards who deserve a fair hearing, a trail based on the evidence and testimony of sworn witnesses, and the presumption of innocence before the law.

We look forward to fair treatment for our son and Professor Black, and also to justice for Gideon, Allison Boot, and all of Lady Noir's victims.
