Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:1998-may, character: morag macdougal, x-character: lena renaud

Who: Lena Renaud and Morag MacDougal (with cameos from the other Claws at the table, perhaps?)
What: Discussing interior design?
When: Dinner, Friday night
Where: Ravenclaw table, unless das ist verboten.
Rating/Warnings: PG for romance/no real warnings

Lena practically skipped down to dinner on Friday. Everything just seemed... possible. She'd had a good solid day of studying, she'd been able to get Zoe laid, which gave her an odd sense of accomplishment, and the owl from her father containing the photos of their new house had just pushed her good mood over the top to downright bubbly.

She slid into a seat at the Ravenclaw table next to Morag and kissed her cheek cheerfully. "Just look at these, darling girl" she gushed without preamble, spreading the photos out on the table (careful to avoid the food). "Isn't it charming? Isn't it lovely? And you will never guess what else."

Morag grinned and ducked her head slightly at the kiss. Being more open about things still managed to give her a bit of a rush. And Lena's excitement was undeniably contagious.

She looked at the pictures. It was a nicer place than she'd even imagined. "This is ours? Well, going to be ours?" She grinned at Lena. "And what else?"

Truth be told, Lena hadn't even registered that there were other people at the table - just Morag.

"Papa bought the house," she exclaimed, all but wriggling in her seat. "He said it makes no sense for us to throw our money away on rent when he can pay off a mortgage - and we can pay him - and at the end, me or Zoe can have the house for keeps! He says that somewhere down the line he's going to buy another house, so we both get one."

It was so exciting. Owning the house meant they could do some real redecorating, without having to mess about with landlords and inspections. It would be their own house, properly. And if they should happen to fall on hard times at some point, their father was much more likely to be lenient and understanding than a landlord, or worse - a bank manager.

"He bought it?" Morag couldn't believe she'd heard that correctly. Lena's father had bought Lena and Zoe--and Morag--a house. And planned to make sure each of his daughters had one, eventually. "He really bought it?"

Morag was still stunned. She'd never dreamed of having joint ownership in a house quite so early. And until Lena, never quite with a girlfriend. "You're father is amazing."

"He says it's an investment," Lena said. "Even if neither of us want it in the end, he can still rent it out to other tenants. And he said he's far happier about an investment than about signing as guarantor on us renting a place and wasting all our money."

She snuggled into Morag's side, shifting the pictures around. "Isn't it cute?" she sighed happily. "Our own place." She couldn't quite resist lifting her head up and nuzzling Morag's neck playfully, though she stopped short of any truly inappropriate PDA.

Morag couldn't stop smiling. "It's lovely. And we can really make it our own. Our room. The common rooms like the kitchen we'll need to consult with Zoe on, of course, but we'll have one that's just ours."

It was far more than Morag had expected.

The initial excitement over, Lena reached for a plate. She was somewhat shy, because seven years of conditioning had taught her that this was not her table, but no one seemed to truly mind, at least so far. She helped herself to steak and kidney pie and mashed potatoes.

"So how long do you think you'll stay with your family before you move in?" she asked curiously. "Not... not that I begrudge you time with them at all, I just... I'm ready to move into this next phase of our lives. Not having to sneak around. Grocery shopping together. Cooking together. Waking up and going to bed together."

"I'm not sure. They didn't actually say when they were planning to have the dinner," Morag said. "But I will need some time to pack, though I don't expect that would take all that long. Mainly I hope they take things...well, at least calmly."

"I could come with you," Lena suggested. "Not to stir it all up, but to be upfront and above board with the fact that you're moving in with me. I wouldn't want them thinking I was too chicken to face them after 'corrupting their daughter'."

The steak and kidney pie was, as always, fantastic, and Lena quickly finished her helping and reached for another. "Can you cook?" she asked curiously. "We haven't really talked much about the practicalities of living together, have we. I like to clean, too. Do you?"

Morag thought for a moment. It would probably not be a bad idea. That way she wouldn't have to do the introducing later, and Lena could help her carry her things if they needed to bail. "I think that would be nice. I'll ask if I can bring someone. You'll make it an even number of place settings if Lindsay brings his girl friend, and my mum always appreciates an even number. Largely because we didn't always have one."

She nodded slightly. "I wouldn't claim I'm a gourmet, but we certainly won't starve or have to live off take-away. And I do like to clean. And keep things organized."

Lena grinned. "I give very good parent," she said. "I mean... all the friends I've had, their parents have liked me... or is that too much like blowing my own trumpet?"

The idea of this dinner made her slightly nervous, because if it didn't go well, Morag's parents might end up not approving of her. And if Morag's parents didn't approve of her, then the chances of a smooth move-in were slim to nil.

"I make a really delicious ham and endive gratin," she ventured. "It's not something I'd recommend living on, unless you particularly want to end up resembling a beach ball in shape, but it's fantastic on cold night with the rain banging on the window and the wind howling through the trees..."
