Who: Prewetts, Weasleys, Abbotts & Dearborns, oh my!
What: The event for those invited here.
Where: Prewett House, The Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, England
When: 11 April 1998 7pm
Rating: Only the gods will know.
Status: IC/OOC thread. Comment here with various shenanigans throughout the rest of the weekend/early into the coming week. Feel free to have side logs adjacent to this thread.

Prewett House had once been at the epicentre of a vast swath of land belonging to this ancient pureblood family, and while the name has garnered a reputation for caution, modesty and restraint, its notable foolish outliers had much diminished the family’s immense wealth over the centuries.

Today, Prewett House sits in in Gloucestershire, England, nestled within a small hidden magical community of upper class families in the Cotswolds. The family lands, though significantly more constrained than in years past, are still expansive and diverse, covering idyllic forests, lakes, rivers, and gently rolling hills alike.

The House itself is a picture of quintessential British country gentility, straddling the line between formal and modest -- the latter being a strongly emphasised and encouraged family trait (however false it may turn out to be at times).

For several decades now, Prewett House has played host to various engagements, from political fundraisers to networking to private parties. Celebrities, artists, and government officials from Heads of State down to filing clerks have been wined and dined within its walls. In magical society, the Prewetts have often straddled the line between civil servants and patrons of the arts, cultivating a valuable middle ground and neutral safehaven for various stakeholders to form alliances or strike quiet backroom deals -- functions which were particularly important during the war.

On this night however, the atmosphere is more intimate. The guest list had been whittled down to family members and a small circle of close friends.

(Of course, said circle of close friends includes no less than: government dignitaries, people of influence [and affluence], and some more successful celebrities -- namely, Ms Valentina Andronikov, a famous magical Russian opera diva.)

Normally the number persons deemed family was as modest as their reputation, but tonight would deviate from the expected as Weasleys, Dearborns and Abbotts are expected to grace the dinner table tonight....

How does your character prepare for this possible small bout of torture? What conversations are had? More importantly, what are they wearing?

Despite his first instincts, Gideon does not decide to settle his nerves with a few glasses of scotch. He'll need all his wits about him if he's to survive tonight.

As for ensemble, CLEARLY THIS.

There was at least one glass of scotch while getting dressed because there is no way Bilius can do this sober. He arrives with Gideon, looking much more... respectable than normal. His wild ginger curls are brushed and slicked back and the beard is trimmed. He even found something decent to wear.

When Percy received the invitation, he was delighted. This was just the sort of soiree that he enjoys. He's elated about attending.

For this particular event, he does not bring Vicky.

He dresses in his best evening robes, to make a good impression.

After extensive discussion, Arthur and Molly do decide to attend. Arthur wears simple brown trousers and a brown suede jacket, with a fun patterned bow tie to bring a bit of color to things. He stays close to Molly for the proceedings- smiling and offering conversation, but always aware of where she is.

Nothing like a bunch of awkward people forced to interact with each other in a formal setting. Whimsy, the Prewett family house elf, passes around drinks and light refreshments to order -- though she has a curious habit of not quite getting those orders exactly right.

How does your character behave? Who do they meet and/or talk to? How many drinks to they slam back on an empty stomach?

Bilius would have tried to limit it to one drink (after all, he's got a flask in his pocket for emergencies), and makes small talk - quidditch, not politics.

Hopefully whimsy did not him some weak fruity drink instead of his whiskey.

Gideon is introduced to one Thomas Burke by his mother, a twenty-something starry eyed, fresh faced handsome lad who also happens to be "Like you!" Martha declares, much to Gideon's dawning horror, because his mother has moved on from her initial shock to trying to set him up.

"I'm here with someone," is the first thing Gideon says to Thomas once his mother leaves them to get to know each other better. "A special someone. And it's serious."

"Ah," Thomas says sheepishly, but, to his credit, accepts it. "It's quite alright. Really, I'm just chuffed to finally get to meet you. You're The Whistling Wizard's second most Handsome Ex-Convict, as rated by its readership."

With utter bafflement, Gideon replies, "Right. Who was number one?"

"Sirius Black."

Gideon rolls his eyes. "Naturally."

Despite the awkwardness of es-tranged family members meeting, Percy tries to make the best of it by polite conversation and smiles. Not surprisingly, he feels quite at home in these settings. A thought occurs to him, which he doesn't share - his traits and personality seem to take after this side of his mother's family, which would help explain why Percy sometimes feels like an outsider among the rest of the Weasleys.

He makes a point to introduce himself to everybody he's not familiar with. When he worked at the Department of International Magical Cooperation, he was accustomed to socializing with foreign dignitaries, and takes the opportunity to practice his French, when applicable. Basically, schmoozing and making contacts. He wishes to make an impression and to keep in touch, after the party, by exchanging contact information.

Dinner in the formal dining room.
[info]excavated
2015-04-12 12:24 am UTC (link)
Dinner is a four course meal with soup and salad served first, then a main course of either rack of lamb or roast chicken and a dessert of passion fruit panna cotta.

Mrs Prewett has organised the seating so that couples sit only diagonally across from each other, which means your character is probably sitting next to someone they don’t know. Mrs Prewett, of course, thinks this is a fabulous way to encourage new meetings and discussions.

Who is your character seated next to and what do they talk about? What mischief occurs at the table (look at you, F&G)?

Of course, Gideon's mother has him seated next to Thomas, who, in spite of the earlier bit of bit of awkwardness, is a decent enough dinner companion. The others around him -- someone he can only vaguely remember from childhood, a stuffy prat probably, and, an equally inane dowager, to whom he politely fields their rude questions about his conviction, his plus one, the scandal with his out-of-wedlock son, etc. All very thinly-veiled and above-board, of course.

George circles around the table once (sharp eyes might notice that he's got his wand tucked into his sleeve, business end pointed out) before sitting down next to Fred, regardless of whether that is his assigned place.

When everyone reaches for their salad forks, they sidle just out of reach. And continue to do so every time they're reached for, until they're caught with a napkin.

Somehow, Fainting Fancies just happened to find their way into some of the bowls of soup--most notably Percy's and Martha's, though they aren't the only ones (anyone who wants one, feel free to get one).

Bilius probably got stuck next to some fuddy duddys and he was pleasant through most of the meal. However, when one of the fuddy duddys makes a comment about being some families being better than others. Bilius gives him a sweet smile and makes a scathing comment. "Oh, so much better that it makes no difference to your wife that you commonly take prostitutes up to the rooms of pubs? Men and women both."

Valentina Andronikov gives a stirring (and nearly glass-shattering) performance in the music room, with Mrs Prewett accompanying her on piano. Some of the men will depart for the study to have private discussions or to the game room for billiard sports. Others will decide to take an evening stroll about the grounds now that the days are longer and the weather is warmer. The grounds surrounding the house are beautiful, with magically lit paths, picturesque forests, a tranquil lake and even a boat on which to ride out onto it.

What does your character do after dinner?
