Prophet Candidate Interviews: Aaron Diggory

11th April 1998 • The Wizarding World's Beguiling Broadsheet of Choice • 5 κ
DIGGORY DETAILS DOMESTIC DOCKET
By Cosmo Mulciber
The final candidate interview is with Aaron Diggory, whose Ministry career has extended through two and a half decades, with only the slightest breath of scandal touching it. Diggory has held the postion of the British Ambassador to the International Confederation of Wizards for the last decade, but his interview suggests a strong domestic agenda despite his current career focus.

What makes you most qualified to lead Britain at this moment? Why do you seek the position of Minister of Magic?

I’ve spent over 25 years in service to my country at various levels of government, and the last ten representing her interests on the world stage. I like to think this extensive experience has given me a particularly unique insight into Britain’s greatest needs, but more importantly, its greatest challenges. The most important aspect to being a good leader is the ability to make good decisions. My record has demonstrated that very well. Running for Minister is not a decision I have made lightly. However, I feel that my long years of experience and my desire to continue improving my country makes it civically irresponsible of me not to run, not when I know I can make a real difference in the governance of this country.

What do you believe are the key issues facing Britain?

I think it would be remiss of us not to talk about the elephant in the room, which is to say the recent series of violent attacks which threaten our national security and the very fabric of our society. I believe we need a candidate who can effectively and promptly eliminate this threat before more tragedies can occur. The bewildering lack of communication to a confused and fearful public and the perception of Ministry indolence is, in many ways, a product of a dysfunctional government. I believe in strong governmental reforms and top-down accountability. I believe in a transparent and fair government when possible.

How will your Ministry improve on the policies of the current Minister with respect to those key issues?

I think it’s time to examine the leaders that have been appointed to powerful positions in Minister Black’s administration, including records and budgets. Let’s get a full accounting of what the sitting Minister has done in order to eliminate those elements that are wasteful and strengthen those elements which work. This of course, includes a full examination of our DMLE. They are our first line of defence in protecting us from those who would seek to tear our magical society apart. Are we giving our men and women on the front lines enough support to effectively do their jobs? Have our past policies regarding known terrorists resulted in the dire and completely preventable consequences we see today?

Hogwarts is the foundation of British life. Do you think any changes are needed at the school, and if so, what would they be?

I love Hogwarts, and I cannot think of many people who don’t look back upon their years there fondly. It has not only fostered our core magical knowledge but also the relationships and connections which go on to last our entire lives. However, to not grow and change with the times is to stagnate. We need to make sure the core curriculum is in line with current magical standards with those of countries from all around the world. We need to account for the quality of our educators and make sure they are truly helping our children and creating an environment of learning. What makes Britain a great nation is her people, and her people can only be as good as what they can learn.

What economic policies, particularly with regard to taxation, spending, and jobs, do you propose to implement?

There is a widening disparity between our classes thanks to some very lax economic policies that allow for tax loopholes which favour the wealthy and not providing adequate support for those less fortunate among us. This kind of immense wealthy often only grows and stays within whole dynasties, doing very little to contribute to the improvement of magical society. I would like to close those loopholes, which will give us more room to employ economics that seeks to create policies that focus ‘from the middle out’, creating policies which will help struggling middle and working class families to improve their lives through subsidies, credits and low-interest loans to start businesses or acquire more education.

There has been an upwelling of violence in Britain of late. How do you propose to stem that tide?

As previously mentioned, I want to give our good men and women of the DMLE the proper support and means to do their jobs -- every day, they are risking their lives to keep us safe and to bring those who would do us harm to justice. It’s about focusing on proactive security and pursuing intelligence policies which will stop threats before they can come to fruition. Perhaps many of our current policies are a holdover from a reactionary time after the war -- we were all tired and grieving and just wanted to forget and start over. Our vigilance may have slipped. Unfortunately, the times are changing again and we cannot afford to deny or avoid the reality that is facing us today -- we need to start shifting our law enforcement and security policies to reflect that.

In particular, what do you believe the rise of Lady Noir means, and how will your Ministry deal with her?

‘Rise’ is not a word I would use. I’d hesitate to give this ‘Lady Noir’ even that much credit because this nation has dealt with far more dangerous and still remains standing proud and strong today. However, she is still a terrorist and still aspires to harm our society. In accordance with my earlier answers -- it’s time to let the DMLE, who already has experience in dealing with this criminal, do their jobs, and then some. I would firmly support utilising new innovative techniques (such as magical resonation) that are changing the face of criminal justice. We live in an amazing age of new technologies that help us to communicate better but also facilitate the ease with which dark individuals can connect and mobilise -- let’s make sure there are safeguards in place to prevent that from happening.
