Prophet Candidate Interviews: Anastasia Nott

NOTT AGENDA ENGINEERS FAVORABLE FUTURE
By Cosmo Mulciber
The subject of today's interview, Anastasia Nott, is the youngest remaining candidate for Minister. The scion of an old, if somewhat controversial, family, Miss Nott has spent her career so far in the Ministry, rising to the position of Assistant to the Head of the Department of Mysteries. Her forward-looking politics suggest a bright future regardless of the outcome of the current contest.

What makes you most qualified to lead Britain at this moment? Why do you seek the position of Minister of Magic?

I would certainly never presume that I'm the most qualified, not alongside Minister Black and Mr. Diggory and, of course, Mrs. Savage-Abbott, all of whom have years in politics behind them. However, I do think that one thing this country needs is someone willing to get her hands a little dirty. I'm old enough to remember the war without fighting in it. I saw what happened. I've watched our society rebuild and flourish. But one advantage I believe I have that the others don't is this: I don't have a long history in politics and for that reason, I'm not going to be expected to make decisions based on previous relationships or based on pressure from departments or people I've been involved with. I'm a fresh slate, and I'm ready to get to work.

What do you believe are the key issues facing Britain?

I think the topic on everyone's mind is the feeling of inequality, especially among both the war generation and then those in Hogwarts. I won't pretend there wasn't any when I was in school, but lately it seems much more tangible. It's important for everyone to look at our similarities rather than our differences. We're witches and wizards, aren't we? And magic in Britain, and the tradition and preservation of it, should be of utmost importance. After that, I believe that education is incredibly important. As I hope most of my fellow candidates will agree, our years at Hogwarts greatly influenced every action we took in our years following. The education and imparting of wisdom and knowledge to the next generation is something that needs to be considered all the time.

How will your Ministry improve on the policies of the current Minister with respect to those key issues?

Minister Black was a post-wartime appointment, and I respect that. I believe his insights and leadership was needed at the start of this decade, but I also believe we've moved past that need. He has mostly kept his hands clean of policies that will affect the greater community. We need to take a close look at what's working and what isn't, and then we need to get rid of what isn't instead of clinging to it simply because it's easiest. I hope to work with all of the divisions of the Ministry and really take things apart and rebuild them into a more cohesive and working government that benefits all witches and wizards.

The impression I've had from Minister Black is that besides his first few rulings when he came into the position, he has mostly been hands-off. I won't be a hands-off Minister for Magic.
Hogwarts is the foundation of British life. Do you think any changes are needed at the school, and if so, what would they be?

I think that Headmistress McGonagall knows what she's doing when it comes to Hogwarts and its students. I can't honestly say that there aren't things that could, and possibly should, be done differently, but I'm not a teacher and never considered the job.

My years at Hogwarts were wonderful, as I've said, and I think that every student should feel the same way when they leave the castle and set off into the world. I felt well-prepared and ready for the next part of my life, and I think that the most important thing we can do with Hogwarts is ensure that that continues to happen.

What economic policies, particularly with regard to taxation, spending, and jobs, do you propose to implement?

I think that most people fall into one of four categories here in Britain when it comes to jobs. One, the Ministry. Two, entertainment and the media such as the Quidditch Leagues, WWN, and of course the Prophet. Three, the businesses that we all populate. Or four, positions that take them outside of Britain or outside of the wizarding community. The last I would like to avoid. We have the best country in all the wizarding world, and there's no reason anyone should feel they have to leave. I'd like to ensure that there are opportunities available for everyone, no matter where their interest lies.

As I said before, I think it's important to take a look at what's working and what isn't, and then instead of holding on to something that's failing, make the changes necessary to ensure success rather than failure. If we're overspending, we'll need to make cuts. If taxes are too high, we'll need to take a look at where we can ease up. The same goes the other way. If there's somewhere that needs a bigger budget, I'll make sure I work to get it.

There has been an upwelling of violence in Britain of late. How do you propose to stem that tide?

It always amazes me when people feel the need to resort to violence. It shows that something is wrong elsewhere, that there's something disagreeable in other policies or actions that aren't being fixed. If the correct laws, consequences, policies, and government actions are in place, there won't be any room for violence. As Minister, I plan to ensure that happens.

In particular, what do you believe the rise of Lady Noir means, and how will your Ministry deal with her?

I don't think we can say for certain that it means anything outside of the fact that she must be a woman unhappy with the way things are heading. If anything, it should be a lesson to all of us, to consider carefully why she's been taking the actions that she'd taking. As I said, I hope that with the right person in charge and the correct actions being taken, that someone like Lady Noir or anyone who follows her, will simply … fade away. It's more important to find the cause behind someone's actions and make the necessary changes there.

That isn't to say she isn't cause for concern. Of course she is. I would have thought the DMLE would have a more definitive plan or response to her or people like her by now, but we've seen first-hand that they don't. Regardless, I plan to, as Minister, work with the DMLE in locating her and silencing her. As she's threatened many people and might be accountable for several crimes, it's very important that she's caught and punished, as I'm sure the Prophet's readers will undoubtedly agree.
