MCMURDO MAKES MATURE MANIFESTO

Postumus McMurdo, the subject of today's interview, has served the Wizarding public in the Ministry for approximately half a century. As the most senior candidate in this election, and one who remembers not only the last war but the Grindelwald era that preceded it, McMurdo has offered his insights and perspectives on the present climate in Britain. What makes you most qualified to lead Britain at this moment? Why do you seek the position of Minister of Magic? I am the most senior candidate and, as such, I have the most experience to bring to the office. I have experience dealing with the international wizarding community. While one of my opponents also offers that experience, I have been working for the Ministry since before he was born. I am seeking the position of Minister because I think Britain needs an experienced leader during these trying times. What do you believe are the key issues facing Britain? At this time, the key issues facing Britain are the safety of her citizens and her ability to show herself competent to the international community. A country that cannot defend her own shows herself weak to her neighbours. We cannot afford to allow internal problems to lesson our nation’s reputation. How will your Ministry improve on the policies of the current Minister with respect to those key issues? I will treat the terroristic threats and events that have been occurring as a legitimate threat. As a nation, we have faced such threats before, and they must not be allowed to reach the same level as they once did in the The Ministry must have zero tolerance for threats against any magical citizen of our great nation. If we allow these events to escalate as they once did, the international community will no longer take us seriously. We cannot afford to lose the respect of our friends and allies.	Hogwarts is the foundation of British life. Do you think any changes are needed at the school, and if so, what would they be? I believe that Hogwarts could use some more focus on the practical aspects of life outside of the school walls. A course covering the basics of money management, household management, how to conduct oneself when applying for employment—things of that nature. A course of this kind would especially benefit Muggleborn students who have a limited exposure to the wizarding world while undergoing their schooling. We must do better by them and all our students. What economic policies, particularly with regard to taxation, spending, and jobs, do you propose to implement? While no one likes taxes, they are necessary; galleons do not grow on trees, and the nation cannot run on thin air. I will be honest and say that if a need for increased taxes arose, I would consider raising, though I would strive to do so in the most equitable manner possible. I also think more should be done to streamline the transition from school life to job life. I would like to institute a programme for lower-income students and Muggleborns to provide affordable housing while they work to build up their own personal funds. There has been an upwelling of violence in Britain of late. How do you propose to stem that tide? As I said, I believe there should be zero tolerance for such violence. The perpetrators must be brought to justice. I propose putting together a task force of Aurors and Hit Wizards to provide training of a volunteer patrol force to help combat this violence and help citizens feel safer. These trained volunteers would help alleviate the strain on the existing Auror and Hit Wizard pool while providing more ‘boots on the ground,’ as it were. And, as they’ll be patrolling areas they are personally familiar with, they will more easily spot anything that is out of the ordinary. In particular, what do you believe the rise of Lady Noir means, and how will your Ministry deal with her? Lady Noir is simply the latest fearmonger and inciter of violence in the tradition of Grindelwald and Voldemort. Having lived through eras where the wizarding world lived in fear of the aforementioned dark wizards, I have no intention of letting Lady Noir rise to their level of prominence. She wiil be caught, she will be tried, and she will be sentenced. I believe in such a case as this, mere imprisonment would not be a strong enough response, and I recommend that she be given the Dementor’s Kiss as soon as she is transported to Azkaban.
