Ashleigh looked at the food quietly for a moment, thinking up a dozen responses that weren't quite truthful enough to actually emerge, apparently. She liked being a good hostess, usually, but right now she couldn't pretend she'd really wanted to cook. "Thank you," she said at last. "I hope you got some for you too." Even if he hadn't, there was no way Ashleigh would finish a whole portion so she could certainly make him eat some of hers.
She let Asher grab plates while she tidied away the toast and spreads. Usually, she would insist they eat at the table, like civilised people, but she honestly couldn't bear to think about the hard chair. "We can eat in the living room," she said, setting out glasses for drinks along with some cutlery. "It's been an awful day."
