What Charlie had written in his journal to Oliver was an issue that had bothered Oliver for days. It hadn't even started with Daphne, which it probably should have. No, it had been Ginny who had made Oliver question whether this, him and Charlie dating, was a good idea. Oliver wanted nothing more than to date Charlie, he really didn't, but the idea that people might want to harm them because they were too men dating each other... well, that upset Oliver a great deal. What worried him even more than that was that Oliver was famous. That came with some fantastic fans, it also came with some crazy fans. Oliver really didn't want for Charlie to suffer horrible words or actions because Oliver happened to be famous and his fans thought that they had a right to decide how Oliver lived his life.
It worried him. Especially when he put together what Daphne had said (even if Oliver did think she had bigger problems than his sexuality) and what Ginny had said and now it turned out that perhaps Oliver had been looking too far out at people, when even one of Charlie's brothers had an issue with the fact that Charlie was dating a man. Oliver knew Ron. Yes, they had never been close friends but they had gotten on fine. Oliver really didn't understand why Ron would suddenly have an issue with him. Except that the more Oliver thought about it, the more he could see that it had very little to do with him and very little to do with Charlie and mostly to do with the fact that your happiness somehow seemed to be undermined if you chose to seek it with someone of your own sex.
To be perfectly honest, Oliver really didn't want to have this conversation. No matter how it would go, despite the fact that he would be having it with Charlie, Oliver didn't think it was going to be a nice conversation. Due to the nature of the topic, he couldn't really imagine how it could be. When Charlie had come over, Oliver had offered him a hug, the way they had when they had just been friends. He had made Charlie tea, because no matter what the conversation was or would be, tea would improve it, Oliver had no doubt. So once they had their mugs in hand, Oliver leaned against one of the kitchen counters, watching Charlie carefully.
"Do you want to break up with me?" Oliver asked almost surprising himself with the question. That hadn't been what he had planned to ask Charlie, but it was probably where his endgame would have led anyway. Oliver didn't want to put Charlie in harms way and it pained him to think that just by offering Oliver what he had always wanted, dreamed of, Charlie might. More so than that, Oliver did not want to come between Charlie and his family. If that meant that he had to let Charlie be... well, not with a man, Oliver would do that, no matter how much it would hurt him. At the end of the day, Oliver knew that Charlie's family would always come before him, that was something he neither wanted to nor would ever expect to change.
