When she spoke, Remus’ jaw clenched tightly. He shouldn’t be angry with her, but she really had no idea what it was like. True, it could be worse, but she hadn’t experienced a transformation. It wasn’t only physically, either. His mood shifted, he had urges that he didn’t have any other time of the month. He didn’t want to subject her to that. Then after the moon… there was the recovery period where he was basically useless. It wasn’t a single night, it was leading up to and immediately after. She didn’t understand a damn thing about it, and her comments showed that very clearly.
“Maybe it is,” he said, looking away from her. He didn’t want to meet her eyes. He was sure the emotions he was feeling now would shine through. He was angry and sad… though what he was most of all was scared. He didn’t want to lose her, but it seemed inevitable at this point. He was throwing away a chance at love, because he knew he could love her. It was highly possible that he already did.
Still, he couldn’t put her through that. “But I couldn’t bear to put somebody through all of this, least of all you,” he said, finally. Maybe this was for the best as it was. She didn’t need someone like him. Even without putting her through all of that, he’d managed to hurt her.
