It wasn’t that Remus didn’t like Tonks. Quite the contrary, actually, but therein laid the problem. Remus liked her quite a bit, and he was beginning to feel comfortable with her around. He knew it couldn’t last, however. She’d started visiting him over the summer, and he liked it enough that he was going out of his way to continue these weekly visits. Remus lived at the castle during the school year, but since she’d started coming over, he looked forward to her visits so much that he was returning home after classes to meet her.
The whole thing was silly, of course. He liked being around her, but he feared they would grow too close. She had been pushing the physical boundary lately and he had been allowing her to do so more and more as time passed. The problem Remus was beginning to notice was that he was also getting too comfortable. Enjoying her company was one thing, but when he began to look forward to having her there and partially wishing she were there more often, he knew things had gone too far. And still, when he opened the door to have that talk, her smile melted his doubts away, and he returned a smile of his own.
“The last time I gave someone a key to my house, it was your cousin and I have regretted it ever since,” he told her, cheekily. Regardless, he stepped aside to allow her in.
No, this was certainly innocent on her part. Much like Sirius, she was an affectionate sort of person. In fact, he felt ashamed of himself for even thinking of her in that manner. She was much too young for him. Full of life, with no need or desire to deal with him and the problems that might come along with him. It was for the best, of course, so Remus told himself to be realistic and shut the door gently behind her once she’d entered.
