Whether he wanted to be or not, the fact remained that he was. Maybe it was because she'd worked herself up so much about the inevitable that she just felt numb, but she wasn't angry. Siobhan didn't even think that she was hurt or upset. The only emotion that seemed to swell up inside of her was for Max and for what he was going through. She wanted to reach for him the minute that he let go of her and stepped back, but her hands fell to her sides, not wanting to push him too far.
She hadn't thought of him going off to be with someone instead of her and when he assured her that he hadn't, she didn't question him. She nodded a little so he'd know that she'd heard and understood what he was saying, but didn't voice any sort of response to that comment in particular. Instead, she just watched him for a long moment. She wasn't sure how much time had passed before she drew in a breath and tucked her hair behind her ear and opened her mouth to speak. "You don't have to marry me," she said. "I know that you think that doing so is going to somehow magically change how you feel about men or about women, but, darling, if it hasn't yet, do you really think it will?"
