"It won't ruin everything," Higgs told her. He couldn't lie and pretend that it wouldn't be difficult, but Higgs couldn't possibly imagine talking about something that clearly bothered her so deeply being a thing that might harm rather than help. Even if perhaps short-term it might feel differently. More than that, Higgs assumed that Max would want to make Siobhan feel better. Higgs wanted to make her feel better and he had known her for a very short period of time. Max had know her for most of his life, had gotten engaged to her. There were things about the other man that Higgs recognised as complicated and difficult, but his love for Siobhan was definitely not one of those. Higgs truly believed that Max would try his best for Siobhan and that perhaps being able to talk about this would let them both move on together stronger.
When Siobhan all but urged Higgs to leave, he wanted to object. He wanted to stay and make sure she started to feel better. It was undeniable that in all of that, Higgs also felt guilty. Guilty for accidentally making a comment that clearly meant far more to Siobhan than it had to him. But it was too late to take it back and now Higgs just had to hope he hadn't started something that would end up hurting both Siobhan and Max. "Of course you can owl me," Higgs assured, standing up. After a moment, he closed the space between himself and Siobhan, pulling her into a hug. "You'll be fine no matter what happens, sweetheart," Higgs told her gently, pressing a soft kiss against Siobhan's hair. "Promise."
