Not for the first time this year, or the last six months, or even the last three, Alicia felt like the foundation of her life had been shaken. It was, however, the first time that such an event was not unexpected. To some degree, the piece of paper formally and legally signifying the end of her marriage had been a surprise, but only in regards to the timing. In comparison to every other thing of importance that year, however, it was downright predictable. She'd known from the moment she decided to sign the divorce documents that this day would come; though if she were being honest with herself, she hadn't really thought it would happen quite so soon. Everyone always said that lawyers and the legal system took forever to do the smallest thing. She supposed that part of her had been hoping that Terence would change his mind. She'd been hoping that since the words first fell out of his mouth, really. Even as she broke down and admitted defeat, she'd still had a modicum of hope. That hope had slowly waned as the weeks passed without hearing from him--and she was both too proud and too ashamed to ask her sister about him--but it hadn't disappeared completely. That is, until she got the owl. After that, everything was sort of...hazy. Alicia felt hollow. It was a simple piece of paper, but the implications were great. She was officially divorced, legally back to being just Alicia Spinnet, as though Alicia Spinnet-Higgs had never been. It was an awful feeling. For the rest of the day, her smile was forced, but it was there. By the end of the day, she was exhausted (not a new feeling). She'd had plans with her new friend at the school, but didn't feel up to actually going through, and told the woman she just wanted to go home. As she packed up for the day, she really intended to go back to her sister's flat. It was only at the last minute that she realized she didn't want to be home alone. She wanted something familiar. She wanted George. Everything was different and she wouldn't find the same solace, but in the hopes that she might find something, Alicia Apparated instead to Diagon Alley, and walked into his shop. She hadn't been there in weeks, hadn't really spoken to him either, so it felt very...stiff. Awkward. She'd decided a while back that she wasn't going to be his problem anymore, but this was just talking, right? Maybe even just sitting. He could still work or whatever while she just...existed. "Hey," she said when she found him. |
