It was entirely true that much about Ashleigh's job bored Axel, but that wasn't why he asked her. He didn't ask because he cared about her job, he asked because he cared about her, and genuinely wanted to know how her day went. Even if it meant she was going to talk about her boring job or things he didn't have as much interest in. They were interesting to her and that was what mattered.
His day, however, had also been boring. And boring was never really good for someone like Axel. Boring tended to lead to trouble. He had, in the past, broken up with girlfriends because he was bored with this life. Or gotten another tattoo, or done something a little bit stupid. That was how he wound up with a second dog, actually. Sometimes he went out drinking with a stranger and didn't remember how he got home. But only one of those things was even remotely a thing he should really be doing again, and he didn't really know what else he wanted for a tattoo.
The only trouble with being upfront about the realization that he was utterly bored was that Ashleigh might think he was bored of her, and that wasn't the truth. As opposite as they were, he loved her. Being with her made him happy. It was just some of the time away from her that he felt bored with everything, and that wasn't her fault.
"It was alright. I didn't really do much." Part lie, part truth. It was alright, even if it made him itch to do something.
