what ? andrew’s birthday surprise part 2
status ? complete
Friday and Saturday had gone pretty much exactly how Evan had planned them, which in turn meant that he had high hopes that today, Sunday, would go as planned, too. Especially when today was the actual day of Andrew’s surprise. By some sort of magic (literally), Evan woke up before Andrew. That too had been a part of the plan, though not one Evan had outlined in the schedule he had provided Andrew with. Pushing in close against Andrew, Evan placed soft kisses against Andrew’s neck and then down his shoulders, moving lower as he went. As far as being awake enough to provide a morning blowjob, Evan felt he was very capable.
It wasn’t terribly difficult to tell exactly at which point during the blowjob Andrew actually properly woke up, but Evan didn’t really change the pace at which he was going, rather just glancing up at Andrew through his eyelashes. Then, when Andrew came, Evan kissed his way back up Andrew’s stomach, his neck and jaw and then finally placed a kiss against Andrew’s lips. “Happy birthday,” Evan muttered happily. “I hope you’re ready for finally finding out what your birthday present is,” he added before giving Andrew’s lower lip a small nibble. “This wasn’t it, by the way,” Evan said grinning.
--
It was only when Evan spoke that Andrew was fully convinced this was reality and not just a really vivid dream. He opened his eyes and looked into Evan’s face, smiling broadly before concentrating on kissing Evan back, his arms wrapping around Evan in a way that indicated very little intention to let Evan get up any time soon. “It’s my birthday,” he said, mouthing the words against Evan’s lips. Of course, they’d stayed up past midnight and there had been fireworks so technically it had already been Andrew’s birthday for several hours, but that didn’t really count.
At the mention of the surprise, Andrew did perk up to become a little more alert. “Is it here?” he asked, pushing himself up despite the weight of Evan more or less draped over his chest. The hotel room looked much the same as it had the night before, definitely lacking in any huge boxes or cakes out of which a surprise could conceivably jump. “Do we have to go to it?” Andrew asked, suspecting that was probably the answer. “Do we have to go now or do we have time to give you an Andrew’s Birthday Orgasm as well?”
--
Evan couldn’t help but laugh at the eagerness with which Andrew pushed himself upwards to look around, in case the surprise was about to jump at him. It wasn’t. “We do have to go to it,” Evan confirmed pushing Andrew back down into the bed, kisses peppered against his neck. He did then shift, though, to lie next to Andrew in a pile of pillows, the duvet discarded somewhere at the bottom of the bed since it had proven rather inconvenient in Evan’s attempts to give Andrew a birthday blowjob. The other question also made Evan give a mix between a snort and a laugh, before he glanced at his watch.
“Well, as much as I wouldn’t turn down an Andrew’s Birthday Orgasm, I think the choice you have to make is between me and your hair,” Evan told him in a serious tone, but there was a small smile tugging on the corner of his lips. “We have about an hour before we need to be at where your surprise is,” he explained. Evan had checked that they could apparate, close enough to the boats at least. “But I’m happy for you to do your hair whilst I get you coffee,” he assured, with another soft kiss against Andrew’s skin.
--
Andrew enjoyed being pushed back to the bed, which he was pretty sure Evan was well aware of, so he returned the kisses happily until Evan shifted to lie beside him. The room was air-conditioned against the Florida heat (even in November, apparently), and without a duvet it was chilly enough that Andrew wriggled his way under as many of Evan’s limbs as he could manage, and under a few of the pillows as well. “This is definitely the best way to wake up on my birthday,” he informed Evan. It wasn’t that he’d never woken up with anyone, but he’d never woken up with anyone he loved. Even without the blowjob, it would probably have won the award for ‘best birthday wake-up’.
If Andrew had known where they were going, he would certainly have picked Evan over his hair. As it was, though, they could be going out in public for all Andrew knew, in which case his hair had to be at least presentable. He rolled over Evan, kissing him and pressing him back into the mound of pillows. “You present me with an impossible choice,” he complained. He could probably do his hair in half an hour. Or 45 minutes. He couldn’t not take care of Evan now that he’d brought it up.
Without preamble or teasing, Andrew kissed his way down Evan’s body, keeping as close to him as possible for shared body heat (or just because he liked being close to Evan, it was hard to tell). The promised blowjob was quick and slightly frantic but, Andrew hoped, no less satisfying for it. After, Andrew pressed a kiss to Evan’s stomach and smirked. “You lay there and recover,” he teased. “I need to do my hair.”
--
Afterwards, with his fingers tangled in Andrew’s hair (since it hardly mattered if he’d mess it up before Andrew had had a chance to fix it), Evan gave a small, happy chuckle. “Of course you do,” he confirmed when Andrew said he needed to do his hair. As Andrew untangled himself from Evan and got up, Evan flipped over on his stomach, watching Andrew’s bare arse as he walked across the room to, presumably, locate some clean clothes. Evan did lie there and recover for a bit, but then he also got up, not bothering with clothes until he’d rang room service to order them both coffee (since Evan wasn’t going to risk the no-doubt monstrous idea that Americans called tea). By the time the coffee arrived, though, Evan had gotten dressed.
Whilst Evan did not spend anywhere near as long on his hair as Andrew did, he did spend some time on getting it to at least look presentable. Whilst Evan also knew they were going to have to go into water so the hair thing would probably be less important, he wasn’t going to stop Andrew from spending ages on his. Not when watching him was so entertaining. Though, Evan did spend a good while attempting to distract Andrew by kissing the back of his neck and laughing when told off.
In the end, it did take them almost the whole hour to finally be ready to apparate and Evan took Andrew’s hand before transporting them to where he’d been told would be okay to apparate to. Then again, Evan did think that seeing how they were in Florida, they probably could’ve apparated in the middle of a crowd and no one would blink an eye. Florida, from what Evan had gathered reading up on the state, was a very strange place.
“Okay,” he said once they had settled, giving Andrew’s hand a squeeze, with no intention of letting go. “It’s going to become quite apparent why we’re here, I think,” Evan told him as they started to walk. And sure, within the next few minutes the building near the river that they were approaching became visible and with it a massive sign saying ‘Swim With Manatees’. When Evan was sure they were close enough for Andrew to have read it, he stopped to turn and look at Andrew, giving him a wide smile. “Happy birthday,” Evan repeated from earlier, his own excitement at the present very hard to miss.
--
Andrew’s hair was not quite perfect, but he’d decided that Evan’s attempts at distraction were worth it, especially since they were in muggle America where no one was likely to recognise him. At least, Andrew assumed they were going somewhere muggle. He hadn’t asked if Florida had a wizarding community, but before he could Evan was pulling him away from their apparition point and towards The Surprise. Andrew looked around as they walked, still not sure what he was looking for, whether it would be a person or a place or an object.
He couldn’t miss the sign, even if Evan hadn’t stopped at that moment to wish him Happy Birthday once more. It was Evan’s excitement that made him smile first, and Andrew squeezed his hand as he grinned back. Andrew had only the vaguest idea of what a manatee was - and wouldn’t have been able to picture one if it weren’t for the sign and its helpful picture. Swimming with any animal was exciting, though - and Andrew wasn’t oblivious to the fact that this would be equally exciting (if not more so) for Evan. “Wow,” he said, taking a step closer. “I didn’t even know this was a thing you could do.”
Glancing at Evan, Andrew laughed. “This is an excellent present,” he said. “Thank you. I assume you’re swimming too? And that you’ve got the swim stuff.” Evan was, after all, the organised one, as well as being the one who’d known it would be needed. And if Evan wasn’t swimming, Andrew would be very surprised.
--
Evan probably would’ve been worried if he thought that Andrew thought Evan would find his present more exciting than Andrew (even if it was potentially true), but as it was, Andrew was smiling and looking excited and that pleased Evan enough not to question it. Even when Andrew said he didn’t know swimming with manatees was a thing one could do. “It’ll be lot of fun,” Evan told him. “Promise,” he added before leaning in to press a kiss against Andrew’s lips and then energetically drag them towards the building.
“Of course I’m swimming, too,” Evan confirmed. He’d booked them the four hour tour, which, if he had understood the description correctly involved both swimming and information and all sorts of educational things. So even if Andrew wasn’t all that sure how manatees lived and behaved (or looked, though, Evan hadn’t considered that), he certainly would do after the tour.
Having been given the wetsuits, they were showed were to go and change, emerging, presumably, ready for swimming with manatees adventures. Looking at Andrew, Evan grinned. “Sexy,” he commented. “Should wear a wetsuit more often,” he added teasingly.
--
“Of course it will,” Andrew agreed without hesitation. Evan had managed to make museums fun, so Andrew really didn’t doubt he’d be able to make something as inherently cool and unusual as swimming with manatees even more fun. Andrew wasn’t given much time to read the reviews or even look at the pictures that were stuck up in reception because Evan was hustling him into a changing room, clearly both excited and impatient. When he emerged in his wetsuit, he chuckled. “So glad I did my hair for this,” he teased. He could understand why Evan hadn’t tried to tell him it wasn’t necessary - for a start, it would have run the risk of ruining part of the surprise, and also Andrew wouldn’t have been very likely to believe him - but he was still glad he’d decided blowjobs were more important.
Though he wasn’t thrilled to be ushered into a classroom first thing, Andrew was pleased to discover that the ‘teacher’/guide managed to make manatee facts almost as interesting as Evan made animal facts. It helped that Evan was clearly in his element, answering (rhetorical) questions and offering comparisons to other animals. Andrew couldn’t help but be reminded of the sweet factory employee who’d been so impressed by Evan’s knowledge.
When the guide stepped out of the room to fetch the snorkels, Andrew leaned close to Evan, pressing a kiss to the warm skin behind his ear. “You’re excellent,” he said. “Do we get to go see manatees soon?”
--
Manatees were amazing! And Evan hadn’t seen any yet, bar the informational video the guide had showed them. They were taken through all the dos and don’ts, which really had mostly involved ‘don’t approach the manatees, let them approach you’. Evan was very excited and whilst he had greatly enjoyed the information session (because questions!), he was also looking forward to actually getting in the water with the animals. At Andrew’s question, Evann grinned, leaning into the kiss Andrew pressed against Evan’s skin. “I sure hope so,” he confirmed just as the guide returned telling them to follow her.
They were lead onto the boat with and Evan proceeded to ask great many questions about what having a job like theirs was like. The people running the tours clearly weren’t scientists or anything, but their affection for the creatures was evident. Once the boat stopped, the guide told them to wait for a moment, before pointing towards the water where quite close by a manatee was approaching. “It’s huge!” Evan announced almost hanging over the side of the boat to look at it better. “Look, Andrew!” He exclaimed turning to Andrew wide eyed.
--
Andrew loved sitting back in the boat and listening to Evan converse with the tour guides, not because he would have struggled to make conversation with them, but just because Evan was so earnest and so passionate and Andrew loved listening to him. When she could get a word in edgeways that wasn’t an answer to a question, the guide - Lucy - pointed out birds and plants, and told them how she knew people who’d been driving along coastal roads and had stopped to watch schools of dolphins playing in the distance. The Wildlife Refuge didn’t look anything like what Andrew had thought Florida looked like, but it was fascinating.
As Evan practically threw himself over the edge of the boat, Andrew reached out to wrap an arm around his waist. “You’ll fall in,” he teased. He did know that getting into the water was the point, but there were things to do first. “If you don’t put a snorkel on, you won’t be able to see them properly,” he added, thinking Evan would find that by far the most convincing argument. Once he was sure Evan wasn’t about to fall off the boat, Andrew rested his chin on Evan’s shoulder and watched the huge animal approach them slowly. It was bigger than he’d imagined from the video. “It’s amazing,” he said. He gave an excited ooh and pointed so Evan could see. “There’s another one.”
--
It was helpful that Andrew was there to make sure Evan didn’t fall into the water, because he probably really would’ve in all his excitement. It was also good that Andrew was there to remind Evan that he’d need a snorkel if he wanted to see the manatees properly. Evan wasn’t very good at containing his excitement. “You’re very useful,” Evan decided as he turned to press a kiss against Andrew’s cheek, before making grabby hands at Lucy to be given a snorkel, at which the woman laughed but then did hand one over to Evan.
They were once again reminded of the dos and don’ts, but once the nodding at the rules had stopped, Lucy told them that they could get into the water, pointing towards one of the creeks as the best spot to swim towards for watching the manatees. The water was much warmer than Evan had expected, but then, Florida was hot and manatees did come here to escape the cold streams in Mexico, so perhaps that made sense. “I promise to attempt to protect you if one attacks you,” Evan informed Andrew jokingly (because manatees didn’t attack people and if they did, Evan would almost definitely lose against one), before putting the snorkel in his mouth and pushing his face under water.
--
Andrew shared an amused look with Lucy, who seemed to find Evan almost as adorable as Andrew did himself, before reaching for his own snorkel. He’d never done this before, but Lucy’s explanation of how to breathe, and how to clear the tube if he got water in it, had been patient and reassuring - as was the fact that Lucy remained in the boat and could rescue them if Andrew started to drown. It didn’t seem likely, Andrew was a decent swimmer and a mask and snorkel was probably not going to throw him off that much, but it was still good to know that she was there.
Deciding to get the worst over with, even though he knew there would be photographs later, Andrew dipped his head under the level of the water almost immediately, then secured his mask. “Good,” Andrew said, smiling at Evan’s promise. “It would be shit if you brought me all the way here, on my birthday, just for me to get drowned by a manatee.” He watched as Evan lowered his face into the water to get a better look at the manatee, then followed suit.
If possible, it was even more peaceful under the water, the noise from the world muted by the water in his ears. Andrew followed Evan, sticking close to him because they’d been warned not to surround the manatee. At first, Andrew kept going up to break the surface for air before remembering that he didn’t need to.
--
It would be shit, Evan agreed, though in the grand scheme of deaths, being drowned by a manatee at least would be quite an exciting way to go. Not that they were very likely to be drowned by the animals at all. Manatees were extremely peaceful animals. Curious, too, as they discovered slowly moving into the creek Lucy had advised them to swim towards. It wasn’t long before their slow movements were interrupted by one manatee, and then another that joined it, in inspecting Andrew and Evan. The animals were amazing, as they came in closer, bumping their noses against their bodies. One’s gave somewhat of a hug with its flippers to Evan’s leg and he almost giggled before remembering that he was under water and it’d fuck up his breathing.
The water was clear enough to see both the animals clearly and also Andrew, at whom Evan glanced ever so often to make sure that he looked like he was enjoying himself. Evan knew that he himself was possibly unreasonably excited at the whole thing, but he did hope that Andrew would be, too. Or at least reasonably excited. He did seem to be, which pleased Evan greatly.
He had no idea how long they had been swimming when the signal from the boat (a low hum rather than a loud klaxon) came to indicate that they should start swimming back. The water was so warm and the animals so peaceful that Evan was pretty sure he had lost all track of time. When they got back on the boat, pulling their snorkels off, Evan grinned at Andrew. “That was amazing,” he announced. “Did you think that was amazing?” He added hopefully.
--
Andrew too had been surprised by the signal from the boat - it didn’t feel like they’d had nearly enough time in the water. Watching Evan had been almost as much fun as watching the manatees (the manatees only won out because Andrew probably wouldn’t get to watch them again, whereas he could watch Evan all the time). “They were incredible,” Andrew answered, nodding with an excitement that did almost match Evan’s. “It’s like they wanted to come investigate us as much as we wanted to swim with them.” It had felt like that, especially when the smaller of the two manatees had spent some time nosing against Andrew’s shoulder like he wasn’t sure what it was for.
Once their snorkels were both off, Andrew leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to Evan’s mouth. It had been far too long since he’d been able to. “Thank you for thinking of this,” he said genuinely. He was sure no one else would ever have brought him to swim with manatees, which made it even more special a present.
--
Evan accepted the kiss happily, very pleased at how happy Andrew seemed with the present. It was hardly as if Evan had at any point expected him not to like it, of course not, or he wouldn’t have organised it, but nonetheless it felt very satisfying to be rewarded with kisses for his choices. “Maybe next year we can do sharks,” Evan said teasingly, pulling half of his wet suit off and letting it drape against his legs. Lucy assured Evan that manatees were much more fun than sharks, a statement which was received with many questions from Evan about where she’d been swimming with sharks and what it had been like. By the time the boat reached the coast again, Lucy had successfully convinced Evan that swimming with sharks mostly was just boring. Evan did not feel he wanted to experience that particular disappointment. “Maybe the Barrier Reef,” Evan decided on instead as they stepped off the boat.
“We must get postcards,” Evan said as they walked towards the building to change out of their wetsuits. “And maybe a stuffed toy?” Evan was sure the gift shop there would sell stuffed toys. “Ooh, do you think there’s a balloon?” He asked Andrew before grinning. “For Jim,” Evan added before glancing at Lucy who was walking alongside them. “Jim’s my cat,” he clarified. He couldn’t really tell whether Lucy’s smile was to do with the fact that Evan wanted a balloon or that he wanted one for his cat.
--
Andrew had been quite excited at the prospect of swimming with sharks, but Lucy’s explanation had convinced even him that it wouldn’t compare to manatees. He wanted to pull her aside and ask if she knew of any other activities that would - because if Evan was planning the Great Barrier Reef for next year, Andrew would have to find something just as good for Evan’s birthday. The prospect of future present-holidays, of going to whatever new and exciting place either of them could think of, stretched out pleasantly.
“Ooh, good idea,” Andrew said, ruffling his wet hair as he followed Evan and wondering how patient Evan would be about waiting for him to fix it when there were postcards and balloons and stuffed toys to buy. Not very, Andrew decided. Not to mention, he hadn’t expected to be getting his hair wet and hadn’t brought any product with him. “Do you think a balloon will last til we go home?” he asked doubtfully. Taking Jim an already-deflated balloon didn’t seem like a gesture the cat would appreciate. Though, with magic they could probably re-inflate it once they were safely back in Evan’s flat.
“You go ahead,” Andrew advised Evan when they reached the changing rooms. “I need the loo.” And, hopefully, a quiet word with Lucy.
