WHO: Ric Proudfoot and Toby King
WHEN: evening, 4 November 2002
WHERE: Ric and Toby's Flat
WHAT: Ric and Toby have a night in at home.
RATING: EF for Ewww Feelings
STATUS: In progress

If the last week could never happen again that would be greatly appreciated. If he could just illicitly 'borrow' a timeturner to ensure that it didn't happen, he would. But since Ric was not involved in any aspect of the Time Room, as of now, he had to settle for ignoring everything he didn't want to address and settled in with his own research. Since the muggle field of Chemistry (somewhat related to potions, but not quite) was calling to him, he'd gone to Waterstones on his lunch break the day before to pick up a few books for light reading. They proved helpful distractions when investigators came to bother him and his colleagues about the whole Barty Crouch Jr. incident and he was almost loathe to take them home over the weekend in case he needed them on Monday for the very same reason.

Since he normally left work early on Fridays, it did not surprise him that Toby wasn't home when Ric walked through the door. That was of little concern to him. There was cereal in the cupboard and he had more than enough reading material to keep him occupied for the next few hours.

After the incident of being stuck on an island suddenly and unexpectedly, Toby had started making sure the cupboards were a little more full than usual. He'd also arranged a delivery of food once a week which helped with not having to go to the market and assured him that Ric would always have food in the house even if something happened to him. He hoped nothing would, of course, but being prepared was definitely the best way to go about things. Because of the knowledge that the cupboards were full of cereal and the refrigerator had plenty of milk, he worried very little about a bit of practice going a little long.

Once he got to their flat, he let himself in and closed the door behind him. "Honey, I'm home," he called out, his sing-song voice bouncing through the home. "Did you miss me?"

"I always miss you. Unless I'm asleep. Or unconscious. Then I'm sure I still do miss you, but as far as I'm aware there is no way to test that theory scientifically," Ric called back. The response was a practiced one and while he varied it from time to time, Ric tended to answer Toby's usual question upon arriving home the same way.

Waiting until Toby actually entered the room, Ric was gracious enough to mark his place (with a bookmark, he wasn't some kind of heathen who folded the corners over) and close his book. "Band practice went well?"

Toby smiled the same way he always did at Ric's response and headed for the room where Ric's voice had come from. Seeing him with a book didn't surprise the man. His fiance often had his face buried in one or had one in his vicinity. Often times, more than one. He nodded at the question and moved to crawl onto the sofa with Ric.

He laid lengthwise, not caring that his lower half had to be curled over the edge of the couch as he laid his head in Ric's lap. "It was good," he said. "I'm glad to be home, though. How was your day?"

One of Ric's hands dropped into Toby's hair, carding through it. While not particularly fond of most forms of physical affection, this simple gesture was born of nearly a decade of being together. He was far more likely to accept physical contact from Toby rather than anyone else in his life. Speaking of, there was still the Sasha situation, which he actually didn't want to speak about his sister's sudden return at all.

"We're still dealing with the aftermath of the Barty Crouch arrest." Ric wrinkled his nose. He wasn't quite sure if the Prophet had overstepped their bounds by reporting on the break in. He was all for the freedom of the press and all of that, but they did announce William Weasley's status as an active unspeakable. Wasn't that not allowed or something?

Toby closed his eyes and let himself be lost to the feeling of Ric's fingertips moving through his hair. The little bits of physical affection that he gave were always appreciated. He knew well after ten years just how little physical affection Ric cared to give and thus soaked up every speck he was given like a sponge.

He groaned at the mention of Barty Crouch's arrest. "I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that things are more than hectic at work, then," he sighed. He'd almost completely forgotten about the whole mess that Ric would be dealing with at work. "How long do you think it'll take for that to get sorted?"

"I have no idea," Ric said honestly. There was no telling how deep the investigation could go. It wasn't like the DMLE could conduct an investigation into the Department of Mysteries, could they? He supposed that was a question for the head of the department and the undersecretaries to hash out. That was a discussion that he was happy to not be a part of. "I don't think I can't talk about it, legally."

Still, there were things that he could talk about. "I bought new books." He showed Toby the cover of the one he was currently reading. "Its a little dry, but informative."

"Right, right. Of course." Toby didn't further that line of questioning. It wasn't Ric's place to tell him anything and he certainly wasn't going to prod him when he wasn't legally allowed to say anything about the situation. Either he'd learn it in the papers or he wouldn't learn it at all. It didn't really matter much to Toby either way.

"Aren't all the books you read a little dry?" he teased, opening his eyes to look at the book, then at his fiance. "How big a stack did you go for this time?"

Ric clutched his book to his chest, a horrified sound emerging from his mouth. "No they're not! They're just... acquired reading." He was well used to defending his taste in reading to others and honestly, he did not take Toby's words personally.

"And not very many. Three or four." Pausing, Ric counted the number of title in his head and then amended his count. "No more than five."

That look alone was worth teasing Ric for. He didn't think that all of the books his lover chose to read were completely boring. They may not have been his taste, certainly not, but if they were really that bad, he doubted they'd hold Ric's attention long enough for him to get through them. "Well, I'm glad that you're enjoying them."

He laughed when the number rose. No more than five sounded like a conservative measurement. "And how long before you go out for new ones?" he teased.

Ric poked Toby's shoulder, more mildly annoyed than anything else. "Just because some people don't know a good book if it bit them in an arse doesn't mean you have to dismiss them out of hand."

That was a good question and not one that Ric had an immediate answer to. "Depends on how long it takes me to get through them. Might have to stop off at my dad's to check out the books I left there."

Toby just grinned broadly at him. "Well, my taste and yours varies greatly," he reminded, him, leaning up enough that he could press a kiss to the underside of his jaw before returning to his comfortable position in Ric's lap. "I'm not dismissing them. I just won't be warring with you for rights to read them."

He nodded. That was a good enough answer. "How's your dad doing?" he asked. "Maybe we should invite him over for dinner sometime soon."

Right fought the urge to cling to his books and his Mine as if he was a dragon protecting his hoard of gold. Maybe he was, in a way. he was a knowledge dragon protecting his books. Surely that was a thing.

Rigc shrugged. "I don't know. Alright I guess. We haven't really talked." Which was weird in and of itself. While Ric liked to think of himself as an independent spirit, almost to the point of being callous, there were very few relationships that Ric clung to with any might. Toby was one. His dad was another. They might not talk every day, but to go longer than a week in one way or another was practically unheard of.

He frowned a bit when he heard that Ric hadn't really talked with his father. "Maybe you should talk to him," he said. Toby knew that Ric and his father were close and it was strange that they hadn't talked. "Tell him that I want to set up a dinner and invite him over," he suggested. It would at least give Ric a reason for starting a conversation which might be all that he needed. A tiny push.

Ric knew that look and he did not want to think about what that look might bring, thank you very much Toby, so he stubbornly avoided meeting Toby's eyes. "He's probably busy with Sasha and stuff." He didn't know the details because nobody told him anything except that something bad might have occurred and that was supposed to make up for a five year disappearance. "And she probably doesn't want to come over."

Toby gave him another look. "Ric," he gently started. "I'm sure that he's not too busy with anything to have a chat with you. And if they don't want to come over, maybe we'll just bring dinner to them." He knew, of course, that Sasha was back, but he didn't know any more than Ric did about why she'd left and what had made her return. The fact that she was back at all was obviously very hard on Ric. He didn't take leaving very well. No doubt he was feeling very abandoned by Sasha.

"You don't want to see her?" he asked.

Ric let off a soft breath of air, somewhere between a sigh and a huff, he wasn't exactly sure how he was supposed to approach the situation. "Of course wouldn't be too busy, but.." trailing off, Ric tried to figure out in what direction he was trying for, "...but maybe there are more important things that he should be doing." Okay, maybe that did not make complete sense, even to Ric, but he was floundering here.

Ric shrugged. "I don't know. She was gone for five years." Without a word. At least Fitz wrote and came back for a visit every so often. He hadn't disappeared and come back thinking everything would be the same as it used to be. People had moved on, changed.

"And you're upset with her for being gone?" he said. It was obvious that there was a lot going on in Ric's head and Toby wanted to relieve some of his stress if he could. Sitting up, he gently nudged Ric with his elbow. "It's alright to be upset with her for leaving," Toby said. "Especially when she was gone for that long. If you don't want to see her, you don't have to, but I think that you should still talk to your dad. You don't want to shut him out just because you're upset with her, do you?"

Ric pulled away from the nudge, perhaps not quite ready for the gentle push Toby was trying to give. "I'm not upset. I don't care." The lie sounded pathetic even to his ears, but he would deny it to his dying day if confronted. "Because I moved on. I changed."

Shrugging, Ric turned the page in his book, even though he did not comprehend any of the text. Appearances were everything. "I'm not shutting him out. I'm giving him a chance to focus on other things."

Toby sighed. "You do care," he told him. "You're just trying to pretend like you don't. Maybe you have moved on and maybe you have changed, but you still care. It takes a lot for you to get to that point with people, but once you're there, you don't just turn it off that easily. Even when you want to. Maybe you should tell her that she hurt you," he suggested, wanting to comfort Ric but knowing it was likely going to be a failed attempt if he tried.

"I know you think that's going to help him or make things easier for him, Ric, but I'm sure he doesn't want to focus on other things. He loves you. He wants you around, even when things are difficult."

"No I don't," Ric insisted. Now that Toby was no longer laying atop him, he felt like he could get up. Almost immediately he began to pace, arms folded across his chest. "And even so, why would she care if she did? It's not like she cared over the past five years." Because if she had she would have written. Or visited. Hell, Ric would have settled for prophetic dreams at a certain point. Now he didn't care. Not at all.

Reaching one end of the room, he turned and began in the opposite direction, repeating the cycle twice before speaking again. "I don't question that he loves me." Now at least. "Or if he wants me around. But there are other things."

He could insist all he wanted, but Toby knew better. The more he resisted, the more true the statement became. He watched him as he got up to pace, leaning forward to rest his arms against his knees as he let his eyes follow Ric back and forth across the room. "She cares because she's your sibling," he pointed out. "I'm sure that she would like to know if she hurt you. How else can she make sure to not hurt you again if she doesn't even realize she hurt you the first go?"

"What other things, love? What other things are you questioning?"

"Well she didn't seem to care before. So why start now?" Ric snapped. He paused mid pace and shook his head. Toby wasn't the thorn in his paw and even at his most... worked up he had to remember that. Because Toby was important and didn't deserve this.

"You know what?" Ric ran a hand through his hair. "It's been a shite day. I should probably just go to bed."

The way he snapped at him was a little unexpected. Toby just blinked at him, even as he stopped pacing and shook his head. He watched him for a long silent moment, unsure of what to say. The eventual conclusion that he should go to bed pushed Toby to his feet and he took several slow steps to close the distance between himself and Ric.

Reaching out, he gently took Ric's hand and gave it a squeeze. "How about you go have a long shower and I'll make something for dinner?" he suggested. "Maybe you'll feel a little better once you've had a moment to yourself and gotten some food in your belly."

This time Ric did not pull away, even when all of his instincts told him to do exactly that. "If I don't come out in thirty minutes you should probably come check that I didn't drown myself. Accidentally or otherwise."

It wasn't a very funny joke, but Ric didn't intend for it to be in the first place. "Like I said. Shite day."

Toby shook his head. "You're so morbid," he said. "If you're not out in twenty, I'm going to come in after you," he said, smirking just slightly as he pulled him a little closer by the hand he was holding. "Now, are you going to kiss me before you go or what?"

Well at least Toby understood him. To some degree. What at least made Ric feel a little bit about himself. Not much, but a bit. "You're welcome to come in after me." He met the smirk with one of his own. "As long as you don't mind getting slippery when wet."

With a roll of his eyes and a put upon sigh, Ric gave Toby a peck on the lips. "So demanding," he accused, though they both knew that was a lie. Ric was so often the demanding one.

He grinned broadly at Ric's words. "Oh, I insist on getting slippery," he said. "And, I think I might wait on making dinner because a shower does sound pretty damn good to me." Maybe it would help Ric forget his worries, at least for a little while. "I'll make something after I've reminded you how good I am at scrubbing every single inch of you," he said, stealing one more kiss from Ric, then tugging him along towards the bathroom.

Oh look, a conveniently placed distraction. Ric was hardly going to argue having sex over talking about his feelings. "You don't have to tell me twice." And for once in a blue moon Ric was content with following rather than leading the way. "So at least we can be clean in body if not in mind."
