Harry was well aware that Halloween was not exactly the most fun time of year for everyone. For most people, sure. Getting to dress up and be someone else for a few hours, going to parties and having fun, that appealed to a lot of people. Many celebrated the fall of You-Know-Who and the end of the war 21 years ago. It was a fairly good time of year, to be sure. But for some, it was a great reminder of painful things. While the rest of the country celebrated an end to the terror brought by the Death Eaters, the Longbottom family mourned the loss of their matriarch. Neville had nearly been killed himself. Though Harry hadn’t lost anyone himself, the impact the night had on his childhood best friend had been more than enough to ensure he would never feel the same way about it as the rest of his friends. He wouldn’t pretend it was nearly as painful as Neville found it, but he’d always found it hard to get excited about a day his best mate was saddened by. Going for drinks had become a tradition for them since leaving school. They didn’t usually stay out all night and drink until they passed out, but a beer or two, that was definitely the least Harry could do for him. This year Neville also had Daisy, which was still weird to Harry, but he mostly tried not thinking about it; that seemed to be doing the trick fairly well. He knew they would probably want to spend the evening together, so he didn’t intend to keep his friend for long--just long enough to catch up and hopefully make the day a little less awful. His head had also been hurting fairly consistently in the evenings, so he didn’t want to be out for long in case it happened again that night. When the other boy showed up at his door, he invited him inside for a few moments while he grabbed his cloak and shoes. “So uh,” he said, searching for something to fill the silence with while he tied his laces, “plans with my sister later?” |
