Who: Andrew and Elise Kirke.
What: Halloween Costume Shopping (Part 2).
Where: Magical costume shop, somewhere.
When: Friday 14th October, afternoon.

After his rather disturbed night, Andrew was grateful to have Friday off. Instead of going for a run, he'd stayed in bed until Evan had to leave for his 10am lecture and had then headed to the gym. Focusing on weights, then swimming, had helped to clear his mind of the nerves about meeting Elise again in person. They'd had two journal conversations, now, which had been fine - but which hadn't exactly inspired Andrew with any brotherly feeling. He knew he should be patient, but it was a virtue he struggled with, and waiting to see whether his feelings changed wasn't doing anything at all to help with the nerves. He felt unsettled, and talking about it had so far only done so much.

After a light lunch, he didn't have very long to wait before he met Elise. He spent that time in front of the mirror, frowning at his hair as he tried to make it behave. Once he'd got it perfect, he grabbed his leather jacket without thinking and headed out the door. He'd thought about inviting Elise to Panquake House, possibly even to talk to Nina before they went shopping, but had decided it felt overwhelming - though whether for himself or Elise or both, Andrew wasn't sure.

Having had an entirely free day to prepare, Andrew was slightly early. He leaned against the wall of the train station for a moment before pulling out his wand to cast a warming charm on his clothes. It was, sadly, getting to that time of year when it was too cold not to.

To say this week had been interesting was probably downplaying it extremely. Between rubbing oil all over the chest of her favorite Quidditch player to having written conversations with Andrew. Those things by themselves would have been enough but throwing in work and university was causing her head to spin out of control. She had a feeling that everything would settle down and she could focus better on the real important things that were going on.

Elise was worried that she was coming on too strong to Andrew when she said that she would be willing to go costume shopping with him. She didn't know what the proper amount of communication was in a situation like this. Deep down, Elise wanted to get to know him as a person. Elise liked talking to people anyways but the simple fact that their dad was such a major arse to him made her want to let him know that she would never be like that. Not all family members sucked. She grew up in a happy family, and this whole situation made her feel guilty.

All morning at work she was distracted but obviously didn't tell anyone the real reason, making an excuse about a paper she had to write over the weekend for a class. She knew her work place was the one place where she certainly couldn't say anything about Andrew. When it finally was time for her to meet him she hugged her jacket a little closer to her as she walked to the train station. She saw him and couldn't help but smile a bit at his jacket choice. Giving him a little wave she laughed, "Nice jacket."

Grateful that Elise hadn't tried to hug him or shower him in any other sign of sisterly affection, Andrew gave a sheepish chuckle. "Thanks," he said. "Evan said he thought we'd get on, before -" Well, she knew what would've ended that sentence. "Guess this is why." Or at least, part of why. Andrew assumed Evan had better reasoning than just that they shared a fondness for leather jackets. "So do you want to go to a muggle shop or a magical shop?" Andrew asked. He'd got information for both, and he didn't really have a preference. "I went to a muggle shop yesterday, but I didn't really find anything I liked, but there's loads of other muggle shops so -" He shrugged.

Not quite sure what to do with his hands, Andrew shoved them in the pockets of his jacket. Conversation usually came relatively easy to him, but confronted with Elise he just had no idea what to say. "There's bound to be parties at uni, right?" he mused aloud. "So maybe you need something muggle so you don't get people asking questions about how you got it to move or changed colour or whatever." He smiled to himself. "Or if you want to impress them, maybe you should get something magical and make them think you're just the most awesome costume designer ever."

Elise had remembered that Andrew had complimented her jacket when they had first met but she hadn't thought of that when she had gotten ready this morning. She just knew that it was a sort of comfort for her to wear it when she had situations she wasn't completely comfortable in. "Great minds think alike I guess?" she said with a small shrug.

Thinking over his question she sighed, "Does everyone wear magical costumes to the Quake party? That's the only one for sure that I was invited to. Being just out of Hogwarts I've gotten the opportunity to really celebrate Halloween if that makes sense?" Running a hand through her hair she laughed a bit, "I'm no help whatsoever am I?"

Finally making a decision she continued, "How about since you went to the muggle one yesterday, why don't we go to a magical one today? I'm intrigued to see what is all out there and maybe one of us can get some inspiration?" Looking over at him she wasn't sure how to continue the conversation on, it wasn't like they were even friends yet, or really even acquaintances, he was a stranger. "Do you have many parties this year?"

"Apparently," Andrew agreed. He was fairly sure there was no such thing as a genetic predisposition to wearing leather jackets. Andrew almost made a joke about Byron having one as well, but caught himself. He'd seen Byron around enough to know that a leather jacket wouldn't look totally out of place in his wardrobe, and if he did have one, Andrew really didn't want to make a big fuss about it.

He shook his head. "No, it's a pretty good mix. Magical costumes, muggle costumes, people who can't be bothered with a costume." Not to mention people who'd lost their costumes since they arrived, whose only nod at a costume had been a hat they'd since taken off or who'd come straight from another party. He nodded. "Yeah, no one really went in for costumes at Hogwarts. I guess there wasn't much need, with us all being dressed as witches and wizards already." The question suddenly made Andrew wonder if Elise had much muggle heritage on her mother's side. "Is your mum a witch?"

Magical worked well for Andrew, so he nodded. "We can floo from the Three Broomsticks?" he suggested. They could apparate, but the floo just seemed easier. "Well, I've got Quake's, and I think Nina said something about a charity thing we were all invited to but I don't remember the date." He paused, slightly, before adding, "And I think I need something for my birthday, but that's a few more weeks away."

"Yeah she is. She's a healer," Elise explained when he asked about her mother. "What about your mother? Are you two close?" She would had to think that he wasn't close to either of his parents when she was fairly close to both of hers. Although right now she felt she wasn't close at all to her father, like he was some new stranger to her.

When he suggested using the floo from the Three Broomsticks she nodded and started walking with him that way. It felt, well not completely uncomfortable, but not extremely awkward at the same time. She wished at this point that she could read his mind and figure out what he really felt about her, and if she was trying for something that he didn't even want.

She was about to talk more about the costumes when he mentioned his birthday. As a fan of Quake she probably should have known that his birthday was soon but she hadn't thought of that. Was she supposed to get him something or would that be trying to hard? "Oh is it? Do you have big plans?"

Andrew should definitely have guessed what route their conversation would go down as soon as he mentioned Elise's mother. He wasn't sure he was ready to talk about Fiona yet. He'd only recently started to talk to Evan about how his mum objected to him talking about magic. There was no way he was going to reveal that particular tension to Elise. "We were," he said, consciously choosing not to lie completely, no matter how tempting it was to say they were still as close as they'd ever been. "She taught me music." He shrugged, leading Elise towards the pub. "It's... more difficult now." It was more than Andrew would have said to most near-strangers.

"Sixth of November," Andrew said. "That's my actual birthday, but Evan's taking me somewhere, so I'm going to have a party later. It'll give everyone a chance to recover from Halloween, anyway." He paused while he gave Elise the correct floo address for the shop and they stepped into the flames one after another, emerging in a medium-sized shop with costumes hung on every wall. "I've got a surprise from Evan, and Aisling's got a concert that week so we're going to that, and Halloween's right before it. So... lots of plans."

Elise looked at the ground more or less as they walked. She really shouldn't have asked about his mom, but she was hoping for some good news about him. At the confession about his mom and him not being close anymore she frowned, Merlin he just couldn't win could he? "I'm sorry," she mumbled, because in all actuality, what else was there that she could say? Sorry both of your parents apparently suck ass? That didn't seem nice.

Happy for the necessary break in conversation the floo provided she quickly stepped in and gave the address. Once arriving she stepped into the store, but not to far that he couldn't see her when he arrived. She was mesmerized at the different things in the store that she could see and was so excited. Finally turning to look at him she smiled, "That sounds like a lot of fun! I hope you enjoy yourself." She really meant it. If anyone needed some good honest distractions from reality she figured it was Andrew, followed then by herself. Greeting the salesperson she started slowly looking at things, "What is your favorite costume you've ever done?"

Andrew shrugged away the apology. It wasn't Elise's fault. Though, he doubted telling his mother about Elise was going to make things any better. He hoped she wouldn't do as Ginny had predicted and take it out on Andrew when he delivered the news. He didn't think she would, and she already disliked magic so much that Andrew wasn't sure that could get worse either.

Instead of dwelling on that, Andrew gratefully allowed the conversation to be diverted to his birthday plans. "Evan's ideas are usually great," he said, "and he seems excited about this one so I think it must be good." He tried to remember another surprise, to demonstrate how good they were, but he wasn't sure any of them would really translate for Elise. They were kind of in-jokes, usually. "He took me to this amazing glass workshop and we got to make our own marble." Andrew thought glassblowing was pretty cool and unique even if you didn't understand the significance, but then again maybe he'd been corrupted by Evan. He honestly couldn't remember if he'd have thought glassblowing was cool before. "Are you seeing anyone?" he asked, hoping the question wasn't too weird. He figured he would have been perfectly comfortable asking a stranger, so there was no reason not to ask Elise.

"That is a very hard question," Andrew complained. "Specifically Halloween costume? Apparently I'm the only person who thinks Halloween costumes should be of scary things." He reviewed his last few Halloween costumes. "Do you know The Nightmare Before Christmas?" he asked. "I went as the main character from that my first year out of school. I mostly made the costume myself, but I got this little ghost dog prop from here, so I thought that was pretty cool." Being a wizarding prop, it had really looked like the ghost of a dog.

Looking over at him while he talked about Evan, she wondered if having Evan here might make things easier, or like the first time it would just end up making things much more awkward. Not that it was Evan's intention in the first place to do such a thing, but it had happened. Maybe a party who knew both of them well would help control the awkward conversation along. Oh well, she really couldn't change anything now. "That actually sounds really fascinating. I've never seen it done but I bet you have to be pretty talented to do something like that yeah?"

When he asked if she was seeing anyone she couldn't help but be reminded of the events that happened prior in the week with her celebrity crush, Mr. Oliver Wood, right as she passed a sexy quidditch player costume. What she would give for a hot and heavy session with him. "No I'm not," she attempted to reply casually," I never really saw anyone in classes I was interested in back at Hogwarts," unless you counted one of the Professors. Running her hands over a color changing costume she wondered if that was weird at all, to not really be dating anyone at that moment. She really didn't think so.

"I think I saw that movie one summer. The tall character is very tall and lanky right? It was such a different concept I remember being intrigued by it. I should really watch it again," she said with a smile. Looking through the different costumes she wasn't sure how scandalous she wanted to go with her costume. Yes she wanted to look cute but she wanted to have some decency. "How many wizards do you think buy the Muggle witch and warlock costumes and wear them around for Halloween Something about that I find funny."

Andrew thought back to the glassworkshop and nodded. "Yeah. I mean, Evan and I managed to turn the glass in the furnace, and make a marble, but the woman who showed us was so much quicker, and I don't think marbles are that complicated. Some of the things she had for sale were amazing. Animals and figures and all sorts." He was so focused on saying all the right things to Elise - or at least, not saying the wrong thing - that he'd forgotten to even look at the costumes. He knew what he wanted, in general, but was struggling to find anything that lived up to his expectations. "We went to a sweet factory as well," he added. "Evan likes seeing how things are made."

It only occurred to Andrew after he'd asked that a real older brother might be expected to look out for Elise's welfare with people she dated, or something. Then again, Evan didn't really seem to do that with Daisy, so maybe Andrew's complete disinclination to interfere in Elise's love-life wasn't a bad sign. "I never dated before Evan," he said. "Actually, we're not dating. We're..." He waved a hand to indicate a whole mass of feelings and discussions and in-jokes. "I don't know what word we're using anymore. We're together." He paused in front of a very authentic (if larger-than-life) Cornish Pixie costume, then dismissed it. "I don't really know... how to be a brother," he said, realising the topic was coming out of nowhere, but trying to take Toby's advice and actually talk about it. "If that's even what I'm supposed to be doing here."

Her description of Jack Skellington was pretty apt, so Andrew nodded. "Even for people who haven't seen the movie, it's obviously a Halloween-themed costume, so it worked pretty well. I'll bet there are cinemas that are showing the film around now. We could go. Take Evan and - Byron, maybe?" At least, with a film, they wouldn't all need to talk very much. He snorted when Elise mentioned dressing up in muggle witch and wizard costumes. "I was going to suggest that to someone on the journals," he said. "I can't remember who now." The words did give him an idea, though, for his evolving costume.

Elise was going to say something about his comment on Evan and his relationship status but then he walk talking about them more or less and it gave her pause. While it was good to know that he also had no clue how to go about this whole situation, it did make her feel a bit guilty about her trying to force him into some sort of relationship between them when he didn't want anything. It wasn't fair that they kept tip-toeing around it, talking about their feelings was the best way to handle it.

"I'll be honest I don't have an endgame planned out for this. Merlin I haven't even talked to our father about it yet so certainly I'm not expecting you to all of a sudden have all these brotherly feelings towards me, if ever," she said looking over at him. "Besides, not all siblings get along anyways. I just want to get to know you Andrew, to see if you are someone I can get along with, be friends with. If, at that point we can become friends, we will take it from there." Was it oversimplifying things? Perhaps, but really that's how she was looking at it. It was like getting to know a new friend, or someone you were dating, they just happened to share the same father. "If you don't want anything to do with me, that's fine. I don't want to force this on you, Andrew." Did people call him anything other than Andrew?

A bright costume caught her eye and she walked over to see what it was. It was a colorful phoenix costume that shimmered in the light. She ran her fingers over her fabric as he mentioned going to see the film, "That would be fun. I remember the songs being quite catchy, I think Byron would like that." It made her smile though at the thought that they had both thought along the same lines, "I mean wearing my Slytherin outfit to a Muggle party would just make me look overly creative no?"

Andrew listened to Elise's answer, feeling just a bit guilty for not being more invested in the whole long-lost-family thing. "It's not that I don't want anything to do with you," he said, because that seemed like the most important correction to make. "I don't have a problem with getting to know you. If you were just Evan's friend, I'd want to get to know you." Granted, Andrew didn't really know that many of Evan's friends, so maybe even that much wasn't true. "I just... don't understand why you want to know me." Maybe there wasn't a reason, and maybe it didn't matter, but Andrew didn't know what else they ought to talk about. "Toby said he'd want to get to know a half-sibling if he found out about them, just out of curiosity. I don't care what your reason is. I'm not going to say we can't hang out whatever, I just want to understand." His throat was tight, but he managed a laugh. "And now I sound like Evan." It was amazing the influence that Evan had been, Andrew thought. Meeting Elise would definitely have been different if it had happened before.

Impressed by the phoenix costume, Andrew reached for the label and discovered that it would slowly become brighter, with more red tones, until midnight when it would go black for 30 minutes before transitioning back to yellow. "Like Cinderella," he said, showing Elise the details. He still didn't think it was very halloweeny, but he was becoming increasingly convinced that mattered to no one other than him. "They'd probably just think you wanted to be stylish," he agreed with a small smile. "There are definitely muggle books about schools that teach magic, though." Andrew couldn't remember the name of them, but he could picture the cover. "So you could say you were a character from that."

A small laugh escaped her lips when he said he sounded like Evan. He did a bit, but at the same time she felt he had ever right to say what he did. She wasn't mad at him for wanting to know her reasons, she just didn't know if she was able to explain to him what exactly she was feeling. "Curiosity I'm sure is a part of it," she replied truthfully, "to know what we have a common, any silly ticks or anything." Looking back up at him she frowned, "I'm not sure if I can fully explain why I feel this need to get to know you, but I do. This probably sounds silly but I feel I want to show you that not all family members are assholes. Just because our father left you and completely bailed on you doesn't mean that is what everyone is like that. I may have half of his genetics but I wouldn't do that to you." Shaking her head she looked back down, "It's stupid I know."

Pulling the costume off the racks she figured she could at least try it on and see if she liked how it looked on her. Yellow was an interesting color to try and work on some people and she had to see if she could pull it off. His comment about Cinderella made her smile, "If only it came with a phoenix price that would make it perfect." She realized that he hadn't been looking much, "Any ideas on what you want to look for?"

Elise's explanation didn't particularly help. It was very similar to what Toby had said, describing a curiosity that Andrew just didn't feel. He didn't assume he and Elise would have things in common, not when they'd been raised in entirely different places, by different people. Maybe he was discounting a huge genetic component of behaviour and personality, but Hogwarts hadn't exactly taught him much about biology. "I wouldn't blame you if you did bail," Andrew said. "You didn't -" He shook his head, not sure how to word what he wanted to say. His dad had left Andrew to his mother, knowing how she felt about magic. He couldn't have known how Andrew's sexuality would turn out - and Andrew didn't even know how Douglas would feel about that. He gave up with a long sigh. "It wouldn't be the same." He supposed it was nice that Elise was worried how he'd react. She seemed like a nice person, as far as Andrew could tell. She just didn't feel like family, and Andrew knew he needed to be patient with that.

"It's weird, knowing that he stayed with you," Andrew said, browsing through a rack of what looked like medieval-style costumes with doublets and hose and funny hats, mostly so he wouldn't have to meet Elise's eyes as he spoke. "I guess I wrote him off as - not an asshole, but as a guy who realised he didn't want kids. All these years, I pictured him living alone, enjoying the big city. That's what mum said he wanted, when he left. I never really thought what it would be like if he met someone else. I didn't picture him... sticking around and having a family." Andrew drew a feather from one of the caps through his fingers. "I think that makes it harder to talk to you than anyone else. Which isn't really helpful."

He was glad to talk about costumes, instead of feelings. (Evan would be proud, though, of the talking Andrew had done.) "I want to evolve a costume over the three parties," he said, smiling. "I just... don't know what. It has to start scary, because the first two parties are Halloween, but most things I've been able to think of go from not scary to scary - like an Egyptian pharaoh to a mummy. But I was thinking, what if it started as the muggle interpretation of something, and then evolved into the real version? I just need something that's different enough."

She knew that Andrew opening up like this was probably very good for him. He needed to be able to talk about what was bothering him but at the moment it was just making Elise feel more and more guilty about herself. It wasn't her fault that her father stayed with her, and she knew that he knew that but it made her feel bad. "There's only one person who can explain his reasoning to you, to me, for why he did it, and that person isn't me," she said playing with the costume she was holding. "We have to talk to him eventually, or well I do. It's getting harder and harder to come up with reasons to go back and see my parents. You don't have to ever talk to him and I'm not going to make you."

Instead of trying to convince him anymore that she really wanted to get to know him she focused on his other topic, his Halloween costume. She was intrigued by his idea of a transitioning costume, it wasn't something she had ever heard of before and she was excited to see how it turned out for him. She tired to think of some options for him to use but couldn't come up with anything specific. "I know it isn't muggle to magic but if you want scary to not you could do a merperson magic to muggle? Muggles don't believe they are scary and I know the ones in the lake are very terrifying."

Andrew smoothed a hand across his hairline. "I don't know if I want to know," he said. Did he care why his dad had left? Why he hadn't told anyone Andrew existed? Why he hadn't made any effort to reach out and be involved in Andrew's life? "It's not like there's a good reason." No matter what Douglas said, Andrew didn't think it was going to be enough. He was alive, he was capable of having a family, of looking after and taking an interest in the life of at least one child that wasn't even his by blood, Andrew didn't think anything he could say was going to justify that choice. And it wasn't, Andrew thought bitterly, as if Douglas was going to notice Andrew not speaking to him. It was different for Elise, and Andrew didn't know how to make that better. "It's a shitty situation," he said, deciding not to beat around the bush about it. "I guess... being nice to each other is all we can really do." And maybe that, maybe being stuck in the same shit circumstances, was enough reason to try to get to know Elise.

"Oh, that's a good idea," Andrew said, smiling. He quite liked the idea, even if he wasn't sure how the tail part of the costumes would work. Magical ones, at least, would probably be okay. "I was thinking vampire. Maybe generic muggle vampire to an actual vampire from magical history. Merperson might be better, though." He glanced at the costume Elise was still holding. "Want to try that on?"

Andrew may not be sure if he wanted to know why his father left but Elise certainly did. She had grown up with his man and he raised her and was always there for her, but now, to know what he had done to Andrew? She was really struggling with coming to terms with it. "You're right, there isn't a good reason and this whole thing just sucks ass," she groaned. When the time finally came for her to approach her father about the situation, there was going to be a lot of emotions that Elise probably wouldn't handle well, but knowing she had Byron to be there was going to be a big help. Andrew didn't have any family like that to rely on, but he did have Evan.

"A vampire might be cool as well, and probably much easier than a merperson to be honest," she nodded trying to picture the costume he was describing. Elise wasn't as artsy or creative as either of her brothers it appeared, just settling for a simple store bought costume. When he asked if she was going to try on hers she looked down, "Oh yeah if that's okay? Maybe they have some stuff here to help with yours? I'll be right back." Making her way back to the fitting rooms she studied the costume for a minute before changing into it and casting a few spells to temporarily have it fit better. The material was comfortable and it was too inappropriate but it still had some femininity to it. She stepped out to looked in the full size mirror, "What do you think?"

"I'm pretty good with tailoring charms," Andrew admitted. He liked clothes, he liked to look his best, and magic made it so much easier than needle and thread that Andrew had never regretted learning a thing or two about it after he graduated Hogwarts. "I'm tempted to see if I can find a way to make a merman costume work." It appealed to him that merpeople weren't traditionally considered scary, too. Not to mention, it was a lot more overtly sexy. "I'm thinking of giving my birthday a time travel theme, but I'm sure there are famous historical mermen I can dress as, so that's not really an issue. And the difference between a muggle vampire and a magical vampire isn't as obvious, visually." More and more he liked Elise's idea, if only he could pull it off.

While she was trying on her dress, Andrew hunted through the 'magical creatures' wall of the shop in search of a merman costume - or a meranything costume. He found a wig, and a cool armoured breastplate, but no tail. He looked up when Elise stepped out of the changing room and smiled. "I think you look great," he said, moving closer. "But you need a headdress."

Elise was pleased that he thought the outfit looked good. At his suggestion of a headpiece she beamed, "That would be cool! Let's look." She quickly walked around him and over to where there were lots of headbands and hats to see if there was anything that went along with her dress.

As she looked over everything she looked down at what he held in his hand and looked around. "Do they have a Trident or anything? You could do King Trident? Or I know he wasn't exactly a merperson but do something with Poseidon? I'm totally just spitballing here. " Finding a bright yellow and orange headband she smiled, "Oh look at this!"

Andrew briefly left Elise to go get a basket to put his items in, so that he could have his hands free to look through the various headbands. He'd just found a scarlet flapper-style feather when Elise showed him the yellow and orange one she'd unearthed. "Oh, that's better," he said. "I was looking for feathers, for the phoenix." He ran the feather between his fingers, then held it out to compare against the orange and yellow. "Maybe we could combine them," he suggested. "Then you'd have both."

Shaking his head, Andrew laughed. "I didn't see a trident," he said, "but I'm sure I can find one if I go to The Disney Shop, or somewhere. There's usually loads of costumes based on Disney." Or Poseidon, that would work too - that would certainly match his 'from another time' theme. "Right," he added. "Do you want these?" he held up the two headdresses. "Or do you want to look around in case something else catches your eye?"

Nodding at his suggestion she looked down at the feather, "Combining them would really cool. That's a good idea! Thanks Andrew," she smiled graciously. Elise could picture the combined piece now and was getting even more excited for Halloween. Maybe this holiday would turn out okay for her, and not super awkward and overwhelming. "Let me go change back real quick and then I should be done okay?"

After heading back to the fitting room and getting back into her normal clothes she walked back over to Andrew. "I think I'm all set. I'll get these three things," she nodded as she collected them from him. "Do you think you are going to try the merperson theme or do you want to look around more?"

"I like the merperson idea," Andrew said. He'd been going to offer to get the headdresses for Elise, but after she took him off him he wasn't sure how to go about it and he didn't want to make things weird, or make her feel like he was trying to buy his way out of the awkward situation. So he followed her up to the counter and they both paid separately.

On their way towards the exit, Andrew shifted his bag from one hand to the other. "The afternoon's still young," he said. "You want to get a drink or something?"
