WHO: Regulus Black and Evan Rosier WHEN: November 1977 WHERE: A broom closet at Hogwarts WHAT: Spying on the Gryffindor Quidditch team CHALLENGE: Backstory (Overlook), Bingo (A broom closet, a friend, a snitch)
It was Regulus's sixth year at Hogwarts, and that meant it was Sirius's seventh. Sirius was not personally a member of the Quidditch team, but James Potter was. James Potter, most unexpected Head Boy ever, captain of the Gryffindor team. There had always been a rivalry between Gryffindor and Slytherin, but this year Regulus was taking it all a bit more personally than he usually did.
That was why he'd agreed to accompany his own team captain, Evan, on a mission to spy on the Gryffindor team's practice in an effort to get ahead of them. Technically they were allowed to watch each other's practices openly, but Sirius would do anything for his buddies and would probably chase them away, and that might lead to them getting in trouble for being disruptive. Besides, spying was much more effective when the others didn't know you were doing it.
Therefore, he and Evan had carefully located a broom closet on the correct side of the castle against an outside wall. It was easy enough to charm a small hole into the wall, and pocket telescopes from Astronomy lessons were handy for actually seeing across to the pitch. It was unfortunate that they had no way to listen in, but they could at least visually determine tactics.
At the moment, Regulus was idly tossing a dead snitch up and down, one of the ones from a pickup match he'd won that summer. He wished winning Seekers were allowed to keep the ones from the matches at Hogwarts. If they beat Gryffindor this year, he was definitely going to put in a request, at the very least. "Do you think this broom closet is trespassing?" he asked. "If we get caught in here, are we going to get detention?"
