Gladys raised both eyebrows at Terence's requestion, but laughed. "I can certainly try," she said, never one to turn down a challenge. A fat hedgehog would be easy enough - though already she was curious how she would make the prickles. Playing quidditch, that would be more of a challenge. Gladys wondered if they would even remember this conversation by Terence's next birthday. What would be funniest, she thought, was if she remembered and Terence forgot. Which meant she should make a note when she got home, and then never mention it again. "Chocolate and hazelnut for the cake, I think," she mused. "Seems most appropriate."
Feeling whimsical, Gladys was torn between bubblegum and lemon meringue for her own ice cream, but eventually settled on the lemon. "I suppose better to be worried about it than not and find our too late that you're not cut out for pet ownership," she said. "Still, if you say she doesn't need to be, then I hope she'll come around. Does she enjoy your pets?" She made a gesture meant to imply both Terence and Marcus in 'your', then busied herself handing over money for ice cream.
The rain had held off, so they were able to take their cones outside to enjoy as they walked along the beach. "Jane was very good," she told him. "I didn't know what I was doing either. She was very reassuring, and her goal did seem to be making the whole situation as easy for me as possible, rather than - well, obviously there was never much need for her to be concerned about the finances." Gladys was quiet or a moment as she licked her ice cream. "She's definitely your best bet if you want to talk about the practical and legal matters. I imagine your situation is different enough from mine that I wouldn't be any help. But the emotions are probably... similar."
