Bethanie smiled at Laurel's praise, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she resisted the impulse to twirl around and show it off properly. "Isn't it great?" she asked. "I love it." She wasn't convinced the skirt looked nice on her necessarily. Certainly, she didn't look anything like as nice as Laurel did - but, she reminded herself, that didn't matter. Bethanie considered most of her friends more beautiful than herself, so this was hardly a new experience. She just felt more conscious of it, for some reason. She decided not to explain her costume choice. Laurel would probably assume someone in the film wore a watermelon skirt - and would hopefully be amused when she learned the truth.
"Shall we go inside?" she suggested. She'd been to a sing-along Sound of Music once, so she had some idea what to expect, but she was curious to see how this would differ. "There's a bar," she added. "Let me buy you a drink. A belated birthday present." She'd thought about bringing something, a gift to make up for the fact she hadn't known it was Laurel's birthday, but she'd had to remind herself there was really no reason why she should have known. "When was it?" At least now she could know for next year. "Did you do anything nice?"
