Lucas was happy for his brother, truly. He even liked Ginny, which said a lot. Through he almost wished that he didn't quite like his brother’s girlfriend, strike that fiancé, as much as he did. Because then he could chalk his unsettled nature to not liking her over the fact that he plain just didn't like the thought of Marcus getting married.
The thought made Lucas sick to his stomach and more than a little disgusted with himself so he buried himself in work rather than force himself to interact with people. What right did he have to deny others their happiness?
None of the keepers in the Reserve had been as outgoing as normal of late. Between the attempted poaching, all the troubles going on elsewhere....it had been a rather subdued place to work lately. But even by those standards...Charlie knew something was up with Lucas. Withdrawn, subdued - nothing like the puppy of a young man he normally was. Shifting the rota about, he managed to finangle an hour alone with Lucas at the end of the afternoon, checking and sorting the supplies in the medical tent. It took two people to fold bandages big enough for a full-grown dragon, even with spellwork.
“Soooooo,” he murmured, entirely without tact. “Feel like talking about what’s bothering you?”
Lucas looked up, almost as if he was surprised that Charlie was speaking to him, which was ridiculous because the pair had almost instantly gotten along as soon as they had met one another. Plus, Lucas had an ongoing affair admiration for Fizz, which probably helped. “Nothing’s bothering me.” He lied through his teeth, hoping that Charlie didn’t know him well enough to actually tell that he was lying. He didn’t stand a chance, however, for he might as well have been Pinocchio, only without the tell tale nose.
“Why, is my work being affected?”
“Your work’s fine,” Charlie assured Lucas immediately, flashing him a grin. The truth was Lucas continued to impress Charlie; as did Tracey. He couldn’t help but be thankful they’d ended up with him here.
“You just seem a little quieter than usual,” Charlie continued. “You can tell me to piss off if you want, I won’t pry. Just...” He shrugged. “Thought I’d ask. In case you needed someone to talk to, y’know?”
The truth was that Lucas did want to tell Charlie to bugger off, that nothing was bothering him, but he was a shit liar and knew that wouldn’t go down very well. “What are you supposed to do when you’re supposed to be happy for someone and know you should be happy, but aren’t?” He queried the other man.
He wasn’t sure if Charlie was the best person to ask, after all the person that was causing all of Lucas’ conflicted feelings was Charlie’s sister. He wanted to be happy for his brother and Ginny, but he couldn’t help but listen to the nagging voice in his head telling him that things were going to change now and not for the better. Marcus’ priorities would change, as they should, and where would that leave him? Lucas didn’t want to think about it, but unfortunately that was all he could think about.
Charlie blinked. He was half-tempted to advise Lucas to ask Ron; that had been Ron’s issue when Charlie and Oliver had first got together after all. Things had smoothed over between them now but it had taken a while.
“Do you know why you aren’t happy for that person?” He asked, gently. “Because that would probably help. If you know why you feel like that. It could be lots of reasons, it doesn’t have to be just one. And then...try talking to them? I mean, it can’t go any worse than me and Ron having a falling out,” he joked weakly. Maybe that wasn’t the best example - they hadn’t spoken for far too long, after all. Charlie had never pretended to give good advice though.
Lucas snorted. “Oh he thinks things aren't going to change AT ALL.” It didn't do much matter the person. Marcus could be marrying a moose for all Lucas cared, but the fact was Marcus was getting married. “Because love means putting someone else’s needs before your own.” Because there would come a time when Marcus would have to choose between Ginny and Lucas and he was pretty sure who his brother would choose.
Shaking his head, Lucas ran a hand through his hair. When had the medics tent gotten so stuffy? “Like I know I should be happy and I want to be, but I don't want things to change.”
Charlie winced. Well this was familiar. “Things change anyway,” he murmured. “Sometimes it’s rubbish, sometimes it’s for the better. But -” he tilted his head. “Everyone has room in their heart for more than one kind of love. Loving someone romantically doesn’t mean that I love my family any less. Y’know?”
Lucas shrugged. No, he didn't know actually, but he was aware enough to know how that sounded so he opted not to voice his opinions on that particular subject. "I'm sure it will work out," he offered. If it was for better or for worse, Lucas wasn't sure, but they would find out eventually.
“It will,” Charlie said firmly. “And...maybe talk to him about it?” He was guessing that it was Marcus; Lucas didn’t have all that many people close to him. And he couldn’t blame Lucas for being apprehensive; he wasn’t overjoyed himself. He wasn’t going to bring that up now though, not when Lucas was already struggling with things. He would be supportive; he would help all that he could. His problems with Marcus Flint were nothing to do with him as a person and entirely to do with the fact that he was engaged to Charlie’s baby sister.
