Laurel didn't take the kids into the Alley often, it was just so crowded and noisy and confusing that it was often far too stimulating for Eva, who was almost six (as she would tell anyone who even looked at her for more than two seconds). It was a lot of work keeping an eye on the little girl while also trying to shop and making sure the other two weren't scared or fussing. But it was her anniversary soon and she knew just want she wanted to buy for her wife. Trouble was, it required a day-trip into the Alley.
She often teased that she was a kept woman, staying at home with the children and working on her writing while her wife worked many hours at the hospital, but they both agreed that she did most of the work wrangling the little one. It was a nice balance, even if that meant Laurel had to take them all with her whenever she left the house during work hours, but she wanted this to be a surprise.
She'd stopped outside Quality Quidditch Supplies - her wife was an avid Kenmare fan - and was just examining a lovely set of colorful banners when Calvin, who was curled up against her chest in his sling, gave a sudden squirm. She let go of Marie's pram to soothe him - because letting go of Eva was the worst idea of all time - and was thus distracted when a shoulder collided with hers.
Covering the newborn's head with her hand, she curled her body around him and stepped away from the stranger. After a moment's check to make sure everyone was all right, she looked to see who it was. She vaguely recognized the man, and there really had been no harm done. In fact, Eva was watching the approaching girl with bright interest.
"It's fine," Laurel replied, running her thumb over her son's head. "I got distracted, I should have been watching." Though, so should he have, but she wasn't going to be rude about it.
