Well, isn’t it funny how... Of course we are all by now aware of the Dark Mark appearing in the sky at the World Cup. Much fuss and worry! Understandably, since no one wants to see symbols of hatred and segregation plastered anywhere much less across the sky.
So the Ministry is investigating! Good! Of course, that is as far as the good bit goes. The Ministry apparently is ‘questioning’ Sirius Black. And sure, Black has a notorious family history that doesn’t put him in a great position when it comes to the Dark Mark but! This is not the problem.
Whether Sirius Black cast the Mark or not, the concern should be the Magical Law Enforcement Office protecting him. And that is exactly what they are doing! Crouch Sr tells us how his best and brightest are on the job? Great. Lead by Auror James Potter.
Perhaps less good. It is undisputable that Potter has a track record of getting things done. But what Potter also has is a known track record of being friends with Sirius Black.
So, how come Crouch Sr is so happy to let Potter question/investigate Black? Does ‘conflict of interest’ mean nothing to the DMLE?
Or perhaps we’re looking at it wrong? Perhaps Potter and Black have been best of friends isn’t the most important thing to consider? Afterall, Potter is also a distant cousin of Black, for both share a very distinctive trait, one highly emphasised by the usage of the Mark - blood purity
Lets sum this up then. Auror James Potter, pureblood, is going to question Sirius Black, pureblood and Potter’s best mate, into the appearance of the Dark Mark, a symbol that to many represents blood purity? What’s next? Kettles questioning pots about being black?
