Who: Charlie and OPEN
What: St Mungo's Fire
When: Early afternoon, Wednesday 20th January, 2002
Where: St Mungo's
Status: Open/Incomplete
Warnings: um, fire?
By now, Charlie was well-used to the various burns and bites that were part and parcel of working in a dragon reserve. Most of the time, he'd just get a bandage slapped on by the resident Mediwitch and go back to work. But it had been Seonaigh's day off, and the bite he'd got on his calf was serious enough that he'd made the decision to go to St Mungo's.
Since he was lucid and the bleeding had stopped, they weren't in any rush to deal with him; he'd been left on a chair in the hall of the Dai Llewellyn Ward. He had his journal on him and a magazine to pass the time so he wasn't overly bothered. Even the rather dramatic woman who was sitting across from him, nursing what looked like a Kneazle bite on her hand and loudly bemoaning her injury couldn't dampen his spirits.
At least, not until healers started running back and forth, looking rather concerned. Charlie levered himself to his feet as he tried to stay out of their way, catching hold of one of the younger mediwitches as she ran past.
"Is everything okay?" He asked, making an effort to look reassuring, despite the dried blood covering his hand and leg. To her credit, the mediwitch managed to sound mostly calm, despite her wide eyes. "There might be a little bit of a fire situation, but it's completely under control," she assured him. Unfortunately, she wasn't quiet enough to avoid being overheard.
"FIRE?!" Of course, it was Kneazle Bite who overheard. She had her wand clenched in a shaking fist as she got to her feet, her eyes darting around the hallway. "Oh Merlin, we're all going to die!" Seeing that the mediwitch was looking more panicked by the second, Charlie stepped in. He limped across to the woman, holding his hands out placatingly.
"It's okay, we're all going to be fine. The staff know what they're doing," he said, in calm and measured tones. He approached her the way he would a spooked dragon - though he doubted she'd be nearly as dangerous. She pointed her wand at him, the tip shaking with nerves.
"You stay back, young man," she snapped. "For all I know, you could be a werewolf!" Charlie was still calm and collected, but he was rapidly losing his patience - and that was before she revealed just how idiotic and prejudiced she was.
"Well even if I was, it's not a sodding full moon, is it?" He snapped. "Calm down, or you'll get someone hurt." He tried to take a step closer and was halted by the tip of her wand pressing against the centre of his chest. Holding his hands up, he took a deep breath and tried to rein in his temper. "If it's serious, the staff will evacuate everyone safely. I'm sure they have procedures in place."
Somewhere out there, Fate was laughing heartily and making jokes at Charlie's expense. No sooner had the words left his mouth than smoke began billowing under the doors at the end of the hall. Screams filled the air, and Kneazle Bite wasted no time in sending a Stinging Hex in Charlie's direction to force him out the way as she ran for the exit. Charlie fell rather heavily against the wall, staving his wrist and twisting his knee awkwardly as he fell.
