Evan was excited. He hadn’t seen Erzebet since uni had broken apart in June, so when she had owled him telling him she was back in the UK and he better go drink coffee with her, Evan had apparated to her flat in Cambridge almost straight away. Two hours later, they were sat in a small cafe, tucked away in one of the smaller Cambridge streets. “And then I was attempting to explain to my very Hungarian grandmother that some people really do choose not to eat meat and the concept was just too much for her to imagine,” Erzebet was explaining. She had spent the last two months in Hungary with her family and seemed rather glad to be back in the UK, even though they still had like two months before the uni started back up.
“I must come and visit,” Evan said and Erzebet nodded. It was a conversation they had had before. Erzebet had many friends at uni, but during term time her and Evan spent a lot of time together, either in lectures or study groups.
“And be my boyfriend,” she informed him. “Because my family will never accept that a boy I’ve brought home isn’t my boyfriend,” Erzebet said with a laugh. This, too, was a conversation they had had before. Evan didn’t really object whether Erzebet’s family did or did not consider him her boyfriend, for as long as he didn’t accidentally end up married to her or something. That would be hard to explain.
Taking a sip of his coffee, Evan shrugged. “As long as we tell Andrew,” he said because that seemed fair and Erzebet agreed with a nod, before asking Evan how things were with Andrew. At the question, Evan smiled widely. He had long ago accepted that there was a particular smile that his face insisted on producing whenever the topic of Andrew came up. Evan had given up on attempting to stop it from appearing pretty early on in their relationship. “Really good,” Evan nodded happily, making Erzebet laugh.
“You sound so loved up,” she told him sounding amused. Evan didn’t object, though, because he was. “Are you in love, Evan Potter?” She teased and Evan laughed.
“Yes,” he confirmed easily since it was true. “It’s a nice feeling,” he told Erzbet honestly. Evan liked being in love. It felt sweet and happy.
Putting her mug on the table, Erzebet ran her hand over the side, smiling at Evan. “It clearly is!” She agreed. “I’m happy for the two of you, you know? Being in love must be very fun,” Erzebet said. Evan knew she didn’t really do dating but it pleased him that there didn’t seem to be any objection to him dating.
“I do like it,” Evan agreed with a grin. “Though, Andrew’s not in love,” he added with another sip of his coffee, which was very pleasant. It was just the right kind of sweet that Evan liked. The thought almost distracted him from the frown that appeared on Erzebet’s face. “No, it’s fine,” Evan said with a small wave of his hand. “We’re happy,” he assured her since they really were. Andrew was great.
“And it doesn’t bother you?” She asked with a raised eyebrow and Evan frowned.
“Why would it?” He asked genuinely unsure of what her question was.
It took Erzebet a while to reply, mostly because she seemed to be staring at Evan like he had suddenly grown another head. Hmm. Would he necessarily notice if he grew another head? Would his vision double or would other!head Evan still be Evan? Would they share thoughts? They’d share a neural link so maybe. Evan was so distracted thinking about whether conjoined twins could share thoughts (and then imagining himself and Daisy being conjoined) that he almost missed it when Erzebet spoke again.
“Most people would be bothered by being in love with someone who isn’t in love with them,” Erzebet told him and Evan tilted his head at her quizzically.
“Why?” He asked honestly unsure. The whole love thing had been awkward. Andrew had said that it would be weird for Evan to be in love with him and for Andrew not to be in love with Evan but nothing had changed, so Evan really wasn’t sure why he should be bothered. Andrew made him happy, wasn’t that the important bit? It seemed like the important bit. And Evan made Andrew happy, even if he didn’t make Andrew love him.
Erzebet gave a small sigh before reaching for her coffee. “I guess, perhaps it’s worrisome?” She offered and Evan scrunched his nose up having no idea what she meant. This time Erzebet sighed louder, as if Evan’s confusing was confusing to her. He couldn’t see why that would be since she was the one insisting there even was worries. “Being in love, it’s like a security, right? You love Andrew so you invest a lot of emotion into that, you don’t want to lose him, yeah?” Evan nodded at her questions because he really didn’t want to lose Andrew. “Well, if he doesn’t love you, then who’s to say he won’t just up and leave?” Erzebet asked and Evan shook his head.
“He wouldn’t do that,” Evan said with confidence and Erzebet shrugged.
“Even if he fell in love with someone else? His heart’s not busy loving you,” Erzebet said and Evan, quite frankly, thought she was full of shit. Firstly, when would Andrew even have time to fall in love with someone else? Evan saw him like all the time. Secondly, Evan was pretty sure people could love more than one person at the same time. Hearts didn’t have quotas. And he told Erzebet as much. “I’m just saying,” she shrugged. “That other people would have broken up with someone if they had told them they were in love and hadn’t received that back,” Erzebet explained and okay, that Evan could accept. She was rubbish at explaining why but Evan knew that he did a lot of things not like how other people did.
“So you’re saying I should break up with him?” Evan asked because that seemed like what she was saying.
“No!” Erzebet exclaimed. “No, shit, Evan, of course not. You’re happy, I don’t want to shit on that. It just surprised me, you know? It’s not often people tell you they’re in a relationship where only they are in love,” Erzebet said and okay, that, too, Evan could accept as true. “If this works for you, that’s great,” she told him. It was great.
“Do you want to explain this to me by applying Kantian transcendental idealism to it?” Evan asked her teasingly before sending Erzebet off into a massive rant about Deleuze, which Evan eagerly contributed to.
