WHO: Anyone who received an invitation
WHEN: Friday 5 August 2002, 7 PM - 2 AM
WHERE: Mountain View Inn, Hogsmeade
WHAT: Quidditch Season Opener Gala
RATING: Varies--keep it PG-13; move to separate and locked post if it goes higher.

In true BIL fashion, the opening gala for the coming season was over the top, under the big top. The ballroom at the Mountain View Inn in Hogsmeade was transformed into a three ring circus. The walls were bedecked in rich silks in shades of burgundy, purple, and gold. The tables, with exotic center pieces, surrounded the main ring, allowing all guests a view of the trapeze artists who flew over head, the jugglers and acrobats who turned tricks, and other circus acts.

There wasn't a formal sit down meal. Instead, guests enjoyed gourmet versions of classic circus fare. Restaurants and food shops from around the magical community were invited to set up booths. Fortecue's provided a sundae bar, and a local bakery did all of the funnel cakes. They were strategically placed next to each other for the purpose of creating funnel cake sundaes. The bar was open, and guests had the option of ordering from top shelf liquor, as wells as pints of ales, glasses of wine, and the signature cotton candy cocktails.

Aside from the entertainment in the center ring, guests could enjoy a spin on a magical carousel or swings. There were carnival games which were rigged so everyone got some sort of prize, and the Magical Menagerie brought several safe yet exotic animals for a petting zoo. The second largest ring was magicked so the sounds of the rest of the gala could not be heard. This was the dance floor, and the DJ played everything from classical waltzes to the Weird Sisters to Muggle dance music.

Servers circled each ring and the main floor with trays of miniature corn dogs, pretzels, sliders, and small pies in sweet and savory flavors. Cocktails could be ordered from the roving waiters, and they passed around flutes of Champagne and glasses of water.

Midway through the night, the head of the BIL and the owners and head coaches announced the newest players for each of the league's teams. There was a specific area for reporters where they held short press conferences with current and new players. Attendees entered through this area and were stopped for pictures on their way in. The only cameras that worked once in the main space were those of the approved photographers for the evening, including a carefully selected woman who took candid photos of the entire event and the gentleman running the photo booth.

This is an IC/OOC post. Please feel free to either comment with: who attended, what they wore, what they did, etc. You may also thread in this post, or as Lis suggested, write out a scene in a doc and link to it here. Have fun with this!

Who came? Bríana Mullet came as Jessica Moran's plus one.
What they wore: this
What they did: Brí partook of the open bar. She wasn't sloppy about it, but she was definitely in that "I love everyone and will hug anyone I can reach" phase of drinking. She also won a pink gorilla by playing one of the games.
Thoughts: Overall, it's a bittersweet thing for Brí. On the one hand, she was thrilled to see the people she used to play with, to hang out with her friends, to have fun and celebrate Quidditch. On the other hand, she misses being on a broom, and she hates that she's not getting ready to play again. But she was there for fun, so fun she had.

Who: Ginny Weasley arrived with Marcus Flint
Wore: this
Did: Ate, drank, and was merry. She did press with her team, ignored all questions about her ring though she did not hide it even a little. She played games, did the rides, danced, found all of her friends and chatted with them, almost stole a cute bb hippogriff from the petting zoo (but not really). She was a quickly moving social butterfly.
Overall: She loved it! The only thing that could have made the circus theme better would have been her brothers' fireworks. She really liked the night.

Arran // Hermione
[info]silverbroom
2016-08-05 05:37 pm UTC (link)
Arran was late. Arran was not usually late - to quidditch galas or anything else - but then, he didn't usually spend half an hour pacing his living room thinking about his ex-best-friend and his sister and the completely untenable situation he'd landed himself in. He should have told Celia about Roger. He should have told anyone about Roger, but it was no good realising that now. He hadn't expected Celia to go and ask him to be her date. He dreaded the moment he might see them, because Celia would expect them to be... normal and Arran had no illusions that he was a good enough actor to convince his sister he wasn't still furious and hurt. Three times he considered cancelling, but then he'd have to try and explain that, not to mention it would be very rude to Hermione.

At least he'd chosen his suit already. It was the one he usually wore to such events, with the black-and-white cufflinks and the grey-green tie. Once he finally-for-the-third time decided he had to go, he apparated to the Mountain View and allowed the press to have their wicked way with him for a few minutes. (Yes, of course he was proud of his sister, yes of course he looked forward to flying against her, no of course it didn't make things awkward at home and, finally, yes he was looking forward to the season starting again.) That done, he snagged a glass of champagne from the nearest waiter and started walking around looking for Hermione.

Thanfully, he found her relatively quickly. He'd have been even more late if he'd had to look for her for any length of time. "Hello," he said, smiling. He had been looking forward to this, and now he had one eye out trying to spot Celia. "Sorry I'm late. You look lovely."

Arran // Hermione
[info]hgrngr
2016-08-06 06:41 am UTC (link)
Hermione wasn't excited per se. She was, however, looking forward to the evening. Going to the annual Quidditch gala hadn't quite been something that Hermione had expected, but she wasn't opposed to going. Had she been, Hermione wouldn't have accepted Arran's invitation in the first place. No, it would be a nice evening. Neville had done Hermione's hair and it looked lovely. The dress she had chosen was, it seemed, a bit plain in comparison to some of the things other women were wearing. But Hermione didn't particularly care. It was still appropriate. Briefly Hermione had wondered whether Arran would've preferred her to wear something flashier. But then she had also decided that she didn't actually care what he wanted her to wear. Presumably, he wouldn't have asked her to go with him if he didn't trust her to dress herself.

Neville and Hermione had apparated to the gala together. It had seemed rather pointless for Arran to come and pick Hermione up when she could very easily meet him there. Since Hermione couldn't spot Arran when they arrived, she had proceeded to chat to Neville and some other people she recognised. When Arran did finally appear, Hermione offered him a smile. The apology was unnecessary since she hadn't really felt his absence. "Thank you," she replied to the compliment. Not that she thought he was particularly commenting on how she looked, and rather just saying the polite thing. Hermione was quite sure she did look lovely, though, so that was okay. She tilted her head slightly, looking him up and down. "You look lovely, too," she informed him honestly, a small smirk tucking on her lips.

Taking a sip of the champagne she was holding, Hermione smiled at Arran. "Will there be dancing?" She asked seriously. "Can you dance, Arran?" Hermione added after a moment. Neville had already made promises of stepping on Hermione's toes, she hoped perhaps her date wouldn't, too.

Arran smiled at the compliment, feeling a little of his usual good cheer return. "Now that we've got the traditional niceties out of the way," he teased, "we can talk like real human beings." Which was not to say it had been a lie - Hermione did look lovely, but Arran also knew it was something he was expected to say. In answer to her question, Arran nodded. "I can, and there will." Because even if it wasn't Arran's favourite activity - and it wasn't - he knew without a doubt that Oliver would find him sooner or later and insist. And then Arran would feel duty-bound to steal Charlie away for a song, and Celia. Except dancing with Celia would mean interacting with Roger. Arran glanced around again to see if he could spot them, then remembered he'd been in the middle of a conversation. "Oliver will expect to dance with you," Arran informed Hermione. "I should probably have warned you about that before you agreed to come."

He turned so he was half-facing Hermione and half-facing the crowd. "I prefer people watching," he said honestly. He pointed, discreetly, at a tall blond standing not too far away, nodding and smiling as a pink-cheeked older woman nattered at him. "Brand new chaser, just signed this week. According to mum, barely speaks a word of English." Arran always knew all the gossip, of course. How could he not, when his family was so steeped in quidditch? "Do you think she knows he doesn't understand a word she's saying?" The last part Arran was guessing. The woman could have been speaking to him in his native language, but the slightly-glazed expression in the man's eyes made Arran doubt that.

"Oh, no," Hermione said deadpan. "Not professional Quidditch players wanting to dance with me, what horror, what distress," she mocked. Hermione may not have been particularly concerned about the celebrity she was surrounded by. It was hard to be when you had been best friends with Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter since aged eleven. Still, she was hardly blind. Annual Quidditch gala must have been one of the best events of the year, just due to the sheer amount of athletic bodies filling the room. So, yeah, if Oliver Wood wanted to dance with Hermione she was not exactly going to object. Unless he wasn't very good at dancing. She was preparing her toes for dancing with Neville, there was only so much the poor things could take.

Turning to look at the people Arran was discussing, Hermione tilted her head, humming thoughtfully. "Do you think she cares that he doesn't understand a word she's saying?" Hermione asked thoughtfully. Personally, she wouldn't have been very interested in talking to the newly acquired Chaser. He looked like a child. Which was a bit unfair of Hermione who couldn't be more than four years his senior, but still. If anything, she'd prefer not to interact with eighteen year olds at all. "What about people watching appeals to you?" Hermione asked curiously, glancing back at Arran. She tended to find people more frustrating than interesting, so the whole thing was just a bit odd to her.

Having not considered it from that point of view, Arran chuckled. "It's a very arduous duty I've volunteered you for," he agreed. "You might also have to dance with a professional dragon tamer while Oliver and I fight over who gets to lead." Charlie might not be a quidditch player, but he was plenty attractive all the same. The thought of animal-tamers (dragon, or lion) reminded Arran of theme, and he cast his gaze around to look for performers. He was sure there would be some, and sure enough he spotted a woman on a unicycle some distance away. "Ooh, look," he said to Hermione with obvious enthusiasm. "Shall we go watch?" Watching circus performers was a lot more interesting to Arran than dancing, though he was perfectly prepared to do both over the course of the evening.

Arran turned his attention back to the chaser. "Possibly not," he acknowledged. The woman certainly didn't look crestfallen, or as if she were in any danger of winding up soon. He continued to watch them as he considered Hermione's question. "I think I just like working things out," he said after some consideration. "Or trying to. Even if I don't ever find out whether or not I was right." His people watching was never malicious. "People convey a lot with body language, it's fun trying to read it."

Hermione did not think she'd have any particular objections to dancing with a professional dragon tamer, really. Not any more than she had to dancing with professional Quidditch players. So she nodded, before following Arran's line of sight to the performers. Giving a small laugh, Hermione shook her head slightly. "Yes, of course we can go and watch," she commented with amusement, not in a way too dissimilar of parents appeasing their children. Leading their way towards the part where performances were taking place, Hermione glanced back at the couple they had originally been discussing.

"I'm not sure I'm very good at telling what people convey with their body language," she commented honestly. "I'm better at how people say things," Hermione explained. It was true. She could, of course, pick up clues from body language. However, following linguistic patterns was something Hermione found easier. When they arrived at the performance area, Hermione stopped in what she assumed was close enough distance for them both to see. Mostly, she based this on her ability to see the performances. Arran was much taller than her, so he surely would struggle less. "Does it help you with Quidditch?" She asked curiously. "Reading people's body language."

Arran noted her tone, but he didn't have a problem with it. He trusted, because he had no reason not to, that if Hermione had an objection to watching acrobats she would have said so. If she was neutral and only agreeing for his sake then he was happy to take her up on her kind offer. He scanned the crowd as they moved, but so no sign of Roger or Celia. He did spot some Weasley-red hair, but it was too distant to know whether it was Charlie, Ginny or someone else entirely. "They're incredible, aren't they?" he asked, once they were close enough. The strength and co-ordination required were certainly impressive.

"Well, that's important too," Arran agreed, "but harder to figure out from a distance." Getting close enough to eavesdrop was generally considered impolite. "Definitely. "He nodded. "Being able to predict which way a beater will aim the ball, or which hoop a chaser is aiming for. It's all important. And watching your own team, to see what tells they have so they can minimise them."

It took Hermione a moment to actually reply to Arran, because the performers really were incredible. One of the acrobats was coming down on what looked like just massive ribbons and it was pretty impressive. "Yes," Hermione nodded, fascinated with the way circus arts were combined with magic. She felt that perhaps she should go and see an actual magical circus performance, rather than just one put into a larger event. "It's a lot of skill," she added meaning both the athletic element and the magical element. In her head, Hermione was spending too much time trying to assess what spells would allow for the performers to move through air the way they did.

"And you play Keeper, correct?" Hermione asked. As far as she was aware, he hadn't told her, but Hermione had looked him up after their first meeting. Mostly out of curiosity rather than any concern. But they were attending an event together after, so Hermione felt it was fair that she had looked up whether Arran was a murderer or something. He wasn't. But he had looked very well in the Quidditch annual calendar of 2000. "I can see how being able to read the other teams might be especially useful in that position," Hermione commented. Not that she knew a great deal of Quidditch strategy, but you didn't go through life being Harry Potter's best friend and briefly girlfriend without learning a thing or two. Mostly about Quidditch.

Unlike Hermione, Arran was mostly impressed with the athleticism required. Even aided by magic, it was obvious even from a distance that the acrobats were in peak physical condition. Arran let himself be distracted from the possibility of running into Roger as he watched them. "It is," he said, when he felt less awed by the spectacle, "another of those talents I wouldn't begin to know how to judge objectively." It wasn't ridiculous like pogo or dressage, but it did have similarities to gymnastics with its baffling scoring system. "I definitely don't hope they fall, though," he added. "Do you think it's because we're here in person with them, or just that a fall is more inherently dangerous than tripping on ice?" But then, crashing a car at high speed was pretty damn dangerous.

"I've played a lot of things," Arran said, with a laugh. "I play keeper now, though. And for good, I hope." At least, until he retired and found something else to do. "Being able to read other teams is useful in every position. Less so as a seeker, I suppose, but even then you have to have some awareness of where bludgers are going to be aimed, where the chasers are going to fly to - and especially what the other team's seeker is doing." He caught himself from launching into a full discussion of seeking tactics, instead pushing the conversation back towards the personal. "Celia's here somewhere," he informed Hermione. "She's going to be announced as seeker for the Ballycastle Bats." He beamed with pride even at mentioning it to Hermione. "She trained unbelievably hard this year."

"I'm not sure," Hermione admitted at Arran's question of whether a wish for a fall was lessened by their physical presence to the people who would suffer because of it. "I think you probably just want to see the whole performance? I'm not sure I've ever hoped to see someone trip on ice either, to be fair," Hermione added thoughtfully. She liked ice skating, but she liked it for the technique, not for the potential of danger. "It is a very impressive routine," she commented as they watched. "But you're right," Hermione agreed with a nod. "It would be very hard to give scores on it. Do you think there is acrobatic competitions? There must be," she hadn't heard of any but as she said it, Hermione realised that there probably were. It was, in a way, a sport. But even things that weren't sports had competitions.

The pride in Arran's voice when he told Hermione about his sister's success was obvious. It made Hermione smile in return almost automatically. "That's excellent," she commented. "She must be extremely thrilled," Hermione added. "I remember when Harry got his letters. I thought that Neville and I would never hear the end of it," she said with an amused shake of her head. It had been a very proud time for them. Hermione could only imagine what it must've felt like when it was one of your actual siblings. "How excited were you to receive an offer?" She asked assuming the answer was 'very'.

"It could be that," Arran agreed, because he did want to see the whole performance. "But it'd be a shame for anyone to get injured, too." And maybe that he was more aware of when he was in the presence of the athletes, rather than just watching them on television. Perhaps it had something to do with the sports he watched not, usually, being live. He frowned when Hermione said she'd never hoped to see anyone trip. He could have sworn they'd had a conversation along those lines, but perhaps he was misremembering, or confusing two different things. It didn't matter. "I'm sure there are," he said, because Hermione was quite right that there must be competitions. "It's human nature, isn't it? We want to know who is the very, very best, or what the greatest possible achievement is." If there was a competition specifically for keepers, Arran would certainly enter, if only to find out where he ranked.

Arran scratched behind his ear as he tried to remember how he'd felt to receive his first offer. "Not as excited as Celia," he answered. "But I'm not sure I've been as excited as anything in my life as Celia is about a nice cup of tea, so it's not really a fair comparison." He was exaggerating, of course, but Celia was very excitable, while Arran on the whole tended to be more laid back. "I was only offered a place on the reserves," he said. "And I was frustrated, because I knew things could have gone differently if quidditch hadn't been cancelled for the Triwizard Tournament." The gala had come so quickly after his letters that he'd still been annoyed, though Roger had done what he could to cheer him out of it.

"Maybe I'll look up whether there are acrobatic competitions," Hermione said thoughtfully. "We can add that to the list of car rallies and not-dressage," she told Arran with a small smile. It was fun, this going places and watching people do spectacular things. Well, perhaps lacrosse wasn't quite that. But she had enjoyed the game and Arran's company. Something that Hermione felt was reciprocated. So perhaps they could go see some acrobats in a competitive format. She had no doubt that the performances here were great, but competitive acrobatics must have been even more impressive.

Hermione hummed in acknowledgement when Arran explained not being as excited because he made reserve. That made sense. As did the frustration over not being able to play Quidditch during the Triwizard Tournament. Seeing how a lot of people practised and some were scouted during their last year at Hogwarts, it made sense to have been frustrated at not being able to play. "But it clearly still worked out well for you," Hermione commented since Arran was playing. "Shall we dance?" She asked, managing to make it sound much more as an instruction than a request. Not aided by the fact that Hermione was already moving towards the dance floor before Arran even really had the time to reply.
