To say that Daisy was a bit leery to try Evan’s culinary skills would be an understatement. However, she trusted that he wouldn’t outright poison her and if she didn’t like what he served, she could always fake it. But really, the food was quite low down on the list for why she wanted to visit with her brother. Now that they no longer lived together and she did not get to see her twin as often she found that she missed him.
Daisy let herself into the flat, dropping her stuff by the door and kicking off her shoes. It felt a bit strange, realizing this wasn’t her home any longer. It was sort of like when she visited her parents. Yes, she had lived there at one time and was perfectly comfortable while there, but she didn’t LIVE there. “Evan?” Daisy called “What are you feeding me?”
--
Unlike the things Evan had cooked Andrew, he didn’t want to risk making terrible food for Daisy. Most of the things Evan had cooked for Andrew had turned out pretty good, so it wasn’t even like there was a real threat of food poisoning or anything. Nonetheless, Evan had opted to cook something for his sister that he had tried already and knew he could make it to a standard that wasn’t going to make her ask for a takeaway instead. “Chicken and white bean stew,” Evan informed Daisy as he looked over his shoulder at her. Now that he had learned what the right amount of pepper was, the stews were actually quite easy and tasty to make.
“I’ve even bought some wine,” he told his sister with a nod towards the table where two bottles of rose were. “Like a proper host,” Evan added. He wasn’t a great host, but he was cooking and giving Daisy wine so that had to be like... points. If there were points being awarded. “How are you?” He asked turning to be able to look at her and stir the pot both at once. “You look...” Evan paused with a shrug. “Alive.” Well, she did.
--
Daisy zeroed in right on the wine, uncorking one of the bottles. She considered drinking straight from the container, but decided against it. She wasn’t some sort of heathen. Thankfully, there were already glasses laid out. Evan was doing very well on the host scale. “Well, if I didn’t look alive we’d have an infiri problem. Plus decaying corpse is such a hard look to pull off.”
Settling down to watch her brother, Daisy made sure to bite her tongue. He wasn’t cooking the way she would, but as long as the results were the same who gave a damn about the route taken? “So I haven’t seen you in forever. Any exciting news to share? Or am I just going to have to make things up?”
--
“I’m sure you could manage,” Evan replied with a snort. Daisy was rather gifted in managing to pull off even the hardest of looks, though he wasn’t sure whether ‘corpse’ was going to look as good as... well, not that. Turning the heat down on the pot, Evan fetched a lid sticking it on. It had to simmer, whatever the fuck that meant, so they had a little bit to just chat. He got himself a glass of wine, too, because why not, and leaned against the counter.
Taking a sip of the wine, Evan shrugged. “I guess it depends what we’re defining as exciting?” He replied with a small shrug. “I’ve been doing the cooking classes, which are fine,” because Evan wouldn’t describe them as much more than fine. “And I finished the attic conversion for mum and dad’s house,” which had been more interesting than the cooking, but only because Evan didn’t particularly like cooking and he did like building things. “Mum and dad walked in on Andrew and I making out,” he told his sister with an amused grin. “And then mum apologised and confused Andrew,” Evan said since that had happened.
--
Daisy snorted into her glass of wine. “Funny. Whenever someone walked in on me I tended to get shouting rather than apologizing.” Maybe she should have tried snogging a girl and see what would have happened. Except there were no girls she was quite attracted to and the only one she could ever see herself giving more than a quick kiss to was now all engaged proper like. “Still, I think that qualified as exciting.” She was glad to hear about the cooking classes, but was a bit disappointed that they were only fine. Maybe she should look into taking some… but at the same time, why pay someone when she could just look at a recipe and make it to her taste?
...Speaking of Evan and Andrew, that jogged Daisy’s memory. “Did you ever take the sex lady’s advice, by the way? How was shopping for sex toys?”
--
“Yeah, funny that,” Evan said rolling his eyes. “I mean, maybe it has something to do with the fact that the boys you were kissing were much older than you and you were underage, but sure, whatever,” Evan told her dismissively with a wave of his hand. As much as Evan would always take Daisy’s side on the fact that she could do whatever she wanted, he wasn’t sure whether the comparison was particularly strong here, seeing how Lily and James had known Evan was there with Andrew, not to mention the fact that they had been dating for months.
At Daisy’s question, Evan shook his head. “No, we haven’t been yet,” he said. Evan wasn’t quite sure why they hadn’t gone yet since it wasn’t like they could find the time, even with Andrew having concerts and festivals and stuff, but it was certainly still planned. “Have you ever been to a sex shop?” Evan asked his sister curiously. “The way what’s-her-name was describing them, they sound epic,” and not in the least because Evan just wanted to investigate things. Sexvestigate.
--
Rolling her eyes, Daisy drank the last of her wine before refilling her class. “A year or two older isn't that scandalous.” Alright, she might have been pushing it with four years at one point, but the bloke in question had been rather pretty. It had totally Been worth it in her estimation. Relationships weren't her thing. She was much happier with her flings, thank you very much. They were far less complicated.
“Once or twice. Once for the novelty and once to actually look around. Some of it…” Trailing off, Daisy tried to find the right words to properly explain the experience. “A lot of it has you going what the fuck and why would someone make that. And then there are things that are bloody brilliant.”
--
A year or two older wasn’t scandalous, Evan did agree. If anything, Andrew was a year older than Evan. But he didn’t really think that it was terribly a lot to do with their age and more to do with Daisy’s. It seemed a bit redundant to have this discussion, though, so Evan moved on, frowning at his glass instead. He had had about two sips from it. “You drink a lot,” he told his sister blankly, but did take a larger sip from his glass to at least attempt to match up (which Evan as pretty sure he couldn’t).
“I look forward to seeing what it’s like,” he nodded. Evan was mostly interested in seeing what sorts of things there even were, he didn’t particularly care about purchasing anything. Though, that might depend on what he’d discover. “What about you, then?” He asked, glancing at the stew which still looked... stewing. “Anything exciting?” There usually was.
--
“Do I?” Daisy looked down at her drink, considering the statement. She never thought she drank that much, but then again, she also didn’t think she spent that much time doing her hair and makeup, yet some how invariably ended being late to work almost every day last week. “I didn’t notice, but then again this is really good wine. Did you buy it?” She glanced at the label, memorizing it.
It would almost be worth asking Evan if she could tag along with him, just to see his reactions to the different paraphernalia, but at the same time she didn’t want him asking for her recommendations. There were some lines Daisy really wasn’t willing to cross, one of which appeared to be letting her twin know what kind of vibrator or dildo she preferred. “And I look forward to hearing your reactions and thoughts. After the fact. You should go with Andrew. Definitely with the person you’re looking to enjoy them with.”
--
Daisy definitely appeared to drink more than Evan, but he wasn’t sure that was enough of a criteria to defend his usage of the word ‘a lot’, so instead, Evan looked at the bottle. “Well, I purchased it,” he confirmed. “But a woman in the shop recommended it,” clearly, she had recommended well. To Evan the wine just tasted like... well, wine. Pleasant but still wine. “Glad you like it,” he added because he did. Maybe if Daisy wouldn’t like the food, at least she could drink enough wine to make up for it.
“I am taking Andrew,” Evan confirmed almost confused why she’d even recommend it. Of course he’d go with Andrew. But then, Evan did think that he would’ve very happily gone with Daisy, too, except that would probably be a bit odd and he had already told Andrew that they were going to go. Andrew was unlikely to want Daisy to join them. “You didn’t answer my question,” Evan pointed out. “About exciting things in your life. Don’t pretend, Potter, I know you must have them.”
--
Well damn, and here she had hoped that talk of sex, Andrew, and sex shops would have distracted him for a little longer. Daisy should have known better however. Evan couldn’t be distracted for long. “Sometimes friends like to go together, and while I like to think we’re good friends, I really don’t need to know that about you.”
Daisy took another sip of her wine, smaller than normal because of course Evan now had to make her paranoid about it, and considered what she could tell him. There was the fact that Prim had finally had sex with her dragon nerd, but her cousin probably wouldn’t like Daisy gossiping about her sex life. Ginny had gotten engaged, but again that wasn’t her news to tell. “Do you want details about my sex life or my work life?”
--
“Don’t need to know what?” Evan asked, turning to turn the heat off since whatever simmering was, he was calling it done. “That I have sex?” He clarified moving the pot off the stove and to the table. “I’m not exactly giving you detailed descriptions, now am I?” Evan said with a dismissive wave as he fetched a leidle, since everything else was already set out on the table. “Come on then, let me not-poison you,” he urged taking a seat so they could try the food.
At her question, Evan raised an eyebrow. “Which one of those is more exciting?” He asked curiously. Daisy was a curse breaker (trainee), which automatically made her work life exciting to Evan. As for her sex life, Evan never really knew where that was at. “Are you seeing someone?” Evan asked reaching to pour some of the food into his bowl. He suspected the answer was a ‘no’, since Daisy’s sex life didn’t necessarily go hand in hand with dating people, but the question still seemed fair.
--
“No, you’re fine,” Daisy assured, “but any more detailed and I’m going to ask you to stop. I don’t need to know likes or dislikes other than the fact that you are very into Andrew-shaped people.” She waited until he finished portioning out the soup to continue.
“Well I don’t know which is more exciting, though I am seeing someone.” In the loosest sense of the word. They saw one another in the bedroom and only in the bedroom. “But that’s actually not as interesting as I’m making it out be with all this build up. They are sending us baby cursebreakers out on our first real excursion soon. They aren’t telling us where though.” Daisy pouted.
“Right now the top contenders are Mexico or Crete.”
--
Evan couldn’t help but laugh at Daisy’s proclamation that she was perfectly happy to just accept that Evan was into Andrew-shaped people. He really was into Andrew-shaped people, especially when those people were Andrew, so that was a fair call. “Promise, no over-sharing,” Evan assured her with a grin, reaching to take another sip of his wine before trying some of the food as he listened to Daisy go on. The food, was actually quite nice. Or at least Evan thought so. He did pause a little to see if Daisy would disagree.
“Mexico!” Evan exclaimed excitedly. “That sounds like a lot of fun,” he told her since it did. Evan wasn’t sure if he’d like the sort of job Daisy did, but he was sure he’d like the travelling. “How long would you be away for? Or do you not know that either?” Evan asked. He hoped it wouldn’t be too long, he wouldn’t like not having Daisy around or ages.
Returning to the previous part of the conversation, Evan tilted his head. “Is it someone I should ask more questions about or is it someone who’ll be irrelevant by the time we next see each other?” Evan asked as he suspected it could be either. Probably the latter.
--
“I’m hoping for Mexico, to be honest. Crete’s been done over and over again. The Teotihuacano civilization, however, much less is known about them. More fun to explore.” Which meant that they were likely going to be sent to Crete, but at least she’d be able to sunbathe on the Mediterranean.
“This is good by the way.” Daisy pointed to her bowl with her spoon. “The cooking classes are paying off and once you’re out from someone’s thumb you can experiment and figure out what’s to your taste.” One more reason why she wouldn’t like cooking classes, Daisy decided. The best part of cooking for yourself was breaking the rules.
--
Evan hoped for Mexico, though. Crete, he was sure, had plenty of exciting parts, but Mexico just seemed far more interesting. Evan wondered if he could ask for souvenirs, but seeing how Daisy was to go for work, maybe she wouldn’t be able to have time to pick things up. He certainly wouldn’t want her to feel bad for not being able to bring him something back. Evan decided not to ask. “It does sound fun,” he agreed. “I hope you get to go,” he also hoped that she wouldn’t be gone for too long, but that seemed useless to note, since Evan was sure Daisy knew that.
When Daisy told him the food was good, Evan smiled widely. “Good!” It was very pleasing to have Daisy say it was good. Evan thought that Daisy’s cooking was excellent (maybe even better than mum’s, but he’d never say that to either of them). “You can join Andrew and Celia on the list of people I haven’t murdered by feeding them,” he announced seriously before taking another bite of the food, happy that Daisy hadn’t deemed it inedible. More so than that, she had said it was good.
“Are you avoiding my questions? Because I can stop asking if you rather,” Evan said washing his food down with the wine.
--
Maybe Daisy was avoiding Evan’s questions, but not purposefully. She paused, mid-sip of wine, and looked at her brother consideringly. “I don’t mind your questions, I guess there just isn’t there much to discuss on the matter. The relationship isn’t like you and Andrew. It’s just a spot of fun for the time being. It’s not like I love him.”
It was a tad more complicated than that, but Daisy wasn’t about to disclose the exact circumstances of those complications. Like the fact that he was older, worked at Gringotts, and had a wedding ring.
“And to answer your other question, because I was distracted by your wonderful stew,” Daisy waggled her eyebrows in the hopes her twin realized she was trying to be lighthearted, “I probably won’t be gone for long. Ten to fourteen days maximum, I think. Unless we fall victim to an ancient curse, which would really suck all around.”
--
“I’d hope you tell me you were dating someone before you fell in love with them,” Evan said with a small frown. “I told you,” he added, because he had. Evan thought it would be odd if the first time he learned about Daisy seeing someone was after she had fallen in love with them. “But ‘a spot of fun’,” Evan carried on, using his hands to make air-quotes around the phrase. “Is fine. I’m glad you’re having fun,” he told his twin honestly. As far as Evan was concerned, not being bored was very important. And fun implied not being bored.
Well, wonderful was probably pushing it, but Evan wasn’t going to object. He also thought that he could probably be okay without seeing Daisy for ten to fourteen days. Probably. Though, he did make a little ‘oooh’ sound when she mentioned an ancient curse. “No, that would be awful,” Evan said in every way sounding like he thought there wasn’t anything more excellent than an ancient curse.
--
Daisy flashed Evan a smile. “I don’t think you have anything to worry about,” she promised. Mostly because she doubted about ever really finding love in the first place. Oh, she believed it existed in real life outside of storybooks. Her parents had it. GInny had it with Flint. Even Prim seemed to find some version of it with her dragon nerd. “And you did tell me. I’m happy for you and Andrew.” There might have been a small seed of jealousy, but it was one she was happy to quash and ignore.
“It’s only interesting if it’s happening to someone else.” Daisy set down her wineglass. “When it’s happening to you it’s a big bloody pain in the arse. Sometimes literally when it comes to the bloody part.” She’d done enough reading to know that she would really would prefer breaking the curses than getting affected by them. “Depending on where we end up going I might ask for a few extra days off at the end for a holiday. Explore on my own. Meet interesting people. Bring home outrageous stories.”
--
Evan smiled widely, happy. A smile, he was pretty sure, had only appeared in his life with Andrew. Evan had never been very big on smiling, but even thinking about Andrew made him smile, in a way that Evan couldn’t stop (and he had tried at the beginning, before abandoning the attempt completely). “I’m happy for me and Andrew, too,” Evan confirmed. “It’s really nice and not complicated,” he told his twin because it was. “And I figured out I was in love with him all on my own,” Evan added almost proudly. Or rather, actually proudly. Because it still pleased him immensely to have managed to figure out the feeling to a point where he was very confident that he had it.
“Please do,” he told Daisy when she said she’d try to get some outrageous stories. “I love your stories,” Evan assured her, since he really did. “And maybe if someone else gets and ancient curse happen to them, you can take photos? It sounds super exciting,” it did. Not that Evan wished ancient curses on people! Well. Not people he knew. Or liked.
--
Daisy wasn’t so sure that uncomplicated was something to strive for, but in the long run of things one could be pretty worse off. Still, if she were Evan shoes she might wish for passion more than uncomplicated, but since that was his relationship and not hers Daisy didn’t really feel a need to air her opinions, for once. Daisy’s smile widened at the mention of love. “Finding love is hard so the fact that you both did, together. That’s something to be proud of.”
Just because she didn't believe in love for herself didn’t mean she thought it was impossible for others.
“Right. I’ll go bar hopping and make sure to get an ancient symbol tattooed to my arse. What’s the worse that could happen?” Laughing, Daisy picked up her wine glass and clinked it with her twin’s. “As for photos, I’ll try to remember, but I don’t typically bring a camera around with me.”
--
Evan had no idea how one ‘found love’ since that by implication meant it was somehow hidden, but he didn’t really question that, instead blinking at his sister. Being proud of something he didn’t think he had much of a hand in doing was also a bit odd. Besides, the whole statement was somewhat inaccurate. “No,” he said with a shake of his head. “Andrew’s not in love with me,” he told Daisy. “But I am in love with him. I’m not sure whether that’s something to be proud of?” Evan asked quizzically.
He took a sip of his wine, after Daisy had clinked his glass, giving a small laugh. “As someone who has a shitty tattoo on their arse, Daisy, I highly advise against it,” Evan told her not particularly keep on ever thinking of the fucking daffodil tattoo he had woken up with one morning. All Daisy’s fault, of course.
--
“That was a fucking brilliant night and nothing you can say will convince me otherwise.” Of course, Daisy couldn’t remember much of said night, but that’s what made it fucking brilliant. Clearly she needed to have a repeat Maybe with the same players or new ones.
Her brow furrowed when Evan explained the state of love within his relationship. “What I meant was that there are so many people in this world, being able to find the one that you love is worth being proud of…. Even if he doesn’t love you back.” Daisy wanted to demand an explanation as to why Andrew didn’t love her twin. He was immensely loveable in her opinion, but since Evan didn’t seem to care (or at least wasn’t upset by the fact) that his boyfriend didn’t love him back, she left it be. Maybe Evan knew something she didn’t. That wouldn’t surprise her, Evan knew lots of things.
--
Yeah, Daisy was totally wrong. It had been an awful night and Evan was pretty sure he was still a little bit hungover from it and it had been actual years ago. Evan liked a good night out as much as the next person, but he was pretty sure that you had to like have a liver made out of actual steel to match up with Daisy. Which was probably quite impressive and something to admire. Which Evan kind of did.
“Andrew’s very easy to love,” Evan said with a shrug. He was. Andrew was lovely and made Evan very happy, loving him was incredibly easy. “Don’t you think--” Evan bit his lip, scrunching his nose up. To him it seemed odd to propose that you were to be proud to find someone to love. Surely it’d be harder to find someone who loved you? “I’m not sure loving someone is really an achievement,” he settled on, finally. “It doesn’t feel very challenging.”
--
“And how long have you been in love?” Daisy challenged. “Look at Mum and Daddy. They’ve been married for ages, loved each other longer, but they still separated for a bit. They had challenges. You may too after awhile.” Hopefully that explained it in terms that Evan would be able to understand. If he didn’t…. Daisy wasn’t sure if she could properly explain it to him. Then again, she hadn’t been able to explain love to her twin, yet he was able to discover it all on his own. Maybe Evan didn’t need her to explain things any longer.
Finishing the last bits of stew, Daisy set down her spoon. “Lets see, we’ve talked about my work and the possibility of getting cursed, my fun and follies in the bedroom, the attic conversion, and future sexplorations. Am I missing anything?”
-
Evan was confused. Was Daisy saying that loving Andrew was going to become challenging? That didn’t really--well, actually, maybe it did make sense. Mum and dad did love each other and they had separated. But seeing how not even they seemed too sure of why that had happened, Evan wasn’t sure that was a good example. “Why do you have to confuse me?” Evan asked somewhat irked before kicking Daisy under the table. “I’ve been in love with Andrew since like... May? I don’t know. It took me a while to figure out that I was. I made a list,” he had, too.
Reaching for his wine, Evan shrugged at Daisy’s list of all the things they had discussed. “There’s Harry’s failing relationship, if you want to gossip about that,” he offered his twin. “He didn’t tell Patil about what happened with the whole,” Evan paused briefly. “Hexing thing. And she asked me if he thought she was stupid and that’s why he didn’t tell her and like, Harry’s too dumb to think anyone’s stupid, so clearly that wasn’t the reason,” he explained before pausing dramatically. “I think Patil might be too nice for him,” Evan concluded.
--
Daisy gave her brother a small glare and kicked back. “I’m just giving you realistic expectations. You will likely fight and it won’t be smelling like roses and daisies forever, you know. But I hope you get past it and it will be all unicorn farts and glitter after the fact.” She didn’t understand what was wrong with a little dose of reality with one’s optimism. It helped stave off eventual disappointment.
“Parvati,” Daisy clarified because she still wasn’t sure Evan realized that there were two of them, “is probably too nice for our brother.” Harry probably knew it too as he was clearly self-sabotaging his relationship with the journalist. “But since he’s the one hexing himself in the foot by not acting like a proper boyfriend I don’t see why we should stop him?”
She wasn’t going to be too nosy when it came to her brothers’ relationships. She wasn’t. Mostly because she would smack both of them in the face if they tried to do it to her. Look at her, she was being a mature, responsible adult about these things. Gold star for her.
--
Evan was pretty sure him and Andrew had fought. Perhaps not quite the screaming matches Evan was so good at getting in with Daisy, but they had had things to sort through. It hadn’t gone badly. It hadn’t even been too challenging once they had both accepted that disagreeing over things didn’t mean they couldn’t discuss them. Briefly, Evan wondered if his sister really knew very much about his relationship at all, but then he realised that she only knew as much as he was willing to share. “I’m happy,” he told her instead of addressing any of Daisy’s other points. He was happy and that was important. Evan had no doubt that Daisy would be glad to hear it.
Parvati, right. Evan knew her name, but he had gotten so used to calling her ‘Patil’ in his head that there didn’t seem a great need to change that. Especially not if Harry was going to get dumped. Maybe if he was going to marry her, then Evan would make sure to actually use her name, since that is what one did with a sister-in-law. Except Patil was too good for Harry and Daisy was probably right that it wasn’t on either of them to fix that. Besides, Evan had tried to ask Harry about it and had been told he wouldn’t understand, so whatever.
“Alright, Potter, eat up, so we can play,” Evan told Daisy with a nod at her bowl and his best ‘mum’ voice. “And by play I mean drink more wine and you telling me about ancient curses,” he added with a small grin.
