It would have been nice to have dressed Harry in a cute costume and paraded him around to collect candy from the neighborhood, but James knew that wasn't in the cards. Not that year, but maybe the next. Maybe if the world settled and they were able to get rid of the darkness that seemed to be seeping into every corner. The darkness that had them in hiding, to protect their son. The very reason they couldn't take Harry out for Halloween. They could keep themselves entertained all the same, enjoy the holiday on their own. James had Harry with him on the floor, making some tiny pumpkins dance across the floor and causing eruptions of giggles any time they would spin around. Little hands reached up for his wand, and he let Harry take it to wave around to try and make the pumpkins dance. It had barely left his hand when he heard the front door fly open and hit the wall, and James was on his feet a split second later. Peter was the only one with the ability to find them, and he didn't let doors slam. He wouldn't throw it open with such disregard to a potential sleeping child. A pit formed in James' stomach immediately, and he crossed the room into the corridor to confirm his fears. Standing framed in the doorway was Lord Voldemort, wand drawn. "Lily, take Harry," he said, not taking his eyes off the wizard in front of him. "Take him and get out of here." He could hear her footsteps, wanted to believe she could get Harry away from danger, but he didn't have much time to think about it before Lord Voldemort raised his wand and James was painfully aware of the lack of his in his hand. Harry might still have it, or it was on the floor in the room, but it meant he didn't, and couldn't do anything to stop what was coming. The last thing he saw was a flash of green, and then everything was dark and gone. James' eyes opened a moment later as he breathed in a gasp, his heart racing as he sat up and found himself... in bed. Not on the floor. His fists twisted into the covers as he tried to make sense of what was happening, how he was there. Two seconds later a scream broke through his thoughts and James' attention was taken from himself and to Lily, glad to see her again after thinking he wouldn't, but more so concerned and scared about what was going on. They could figure it out together, whatever it was. That much he was sure of. So he pulled her into his arms, finding it easier to focus on her than his own muddled mind. |
