She was, of course, right. Higgs might not feel like he was doing everything he should but he also didn't know what else he could do, so this would have to be enough. It helped a great deal to know where Lydia was at with it all. It was lucky, really, that Higgs did feel comfortable to speak to her, not being friends wouldn't have stopped him from talking to Lydia about this, but it certainly made it easier. All of this was an unfortunate situation and no, Lydia was also right ins saying that they couldn't change it, so realistically they just needed to find a way that worked for all four of them. It wouldn't be easy but Higgs doubted it was impossible. Nothing really ever was.
"Yes," he nodded with a smile when Lydia asked if he wanted another drink. "Go get us some more drinks and when you come back we'll talk about things that aren't our relationships," he told her teasingly. "I'm sure we'll find something," he added with a grin. They tended to be pretty good at talking about plenty of things that weren't their significant others and now that that conversation was out of the way, Higgs did really look forward to catching up with Lydia over all the other things in her life. Because that's what friends did.
